Im pretty sure TAS is happening in-game though at least. Last week's champion for Z2-Neigh Slayer in-game has the best time posted here beat by 2 seconds I think. Alternating left and right every frame to stab 3 times per jump

I dont know if I want DLC, I think the core game could use some work - was it too much to ask for in-game leaderboards? maybe more exciting trials or unique twists not normally seen in these games? NES Remix always on my mind here.

Theres a lot of games that I'd like to have seen but understandably absent due to rights acquisition. Things like Ghouls n Ghosts, Castlevania, Contra, Mega Man.. definitely Tetris and Rad Racer to complete the main reference. As far as 1st/2nd party goes though... Dr. Mario or Wario's Woods would have been welcome puzzle representation. I don't know if Tennis or Golf translate all that well into the speedrunning format, but if you want sports representation... Punch-Out!!! is right there.

If there was any way to make Duck Hunt work (or the light gun games in general) I'd be hyped for that, too.

I'll be first in line for SNES edition.

I got 1.06 like a dozen times in a row, went to the bathroom, came back and then got 1.05. Hope this helps LMAO

Seriously though just keep doing it. eventually it happens

My brain is smooth. I completely forgot there's an SMB2 trial thats just the Birdo fight. I would have seen the egg grab+sphere grab in one jump there instead of stumbling into it in my 1-1 Dream Run misadventures. I tried using my turbo controller again to see if it was possible to get a better time than the one I just set but to my dismay, the turbo controller was not executing everything as early as possible for me. I'm not sure if the Slime controller simply isnt fast enough or what but now it seems that my general timing previously was also quite lucky because I just couldn't reproduce an ideal grab+throw+grab with it again.

Oh well, I did submit another banger for 'Egg Toss' and took the chance to style on Birdo for good measure. I think I'm gonna give that 'Z2 Firefight' trial a go and try to manually reproduce what Pirohiko posted. I feel like I could if I remap a couple buttons in the switch's settings.

You can play this with the Switch NES controller 'joycon' right? Thinking about Tetris hypertapping lol

Its been verified! While its up please enjoy my story about it in the description, it was completely sick and accidental LMAO

I am going to get into contact with whoever verified it because I just now managed to do it without a turbo controller and even tied the time I just did so I can finally rest it on this trial. I knew it wouldn't take long.

Anyway the tech is to grab the egg on the way UP when you jump. This enables you to grab, throw, and grab the sphere all in the same jump. At this point I've worked out fairly exact timings to pull this off with.... enough consistency. Will detail it in the revised, non-turbo upload.

EDIT: Everything is sorted, 'purified' PB is uploaded and replaced the turbo one.

@NeSs7or9 can you not just remap multiple buttons to the same input in the Switch settings? I forgot if you can do it to like, the right stick but I had an idea that I would just map the entire stick to B and then just rotate it when I want that speed

@pirohiko thats a spicy meatball! Also I recognize your name from some TAS videos ive watched, cheers friend!

I appreciate the insight. Something unlocked in me yesterday and I think I've got the sauce to keep going and solutions to mash faster. In this particular case its less about the speed and more about casting a wider net of inputs to better hit the earliest ones.

I haven't even shown it to you yet, brother! But I appreciate the input. I will have something more palatable prepared if this gets rejected.

I'm submitting an absolute killer for SMB2's '1-1 Dream Run' that... well it'll be in the description but I wound up accidentally figuring out a new technique that enabled a pretty damn crushing time. I used my slime controller's (ow my hands) turbo functionality at the end to simplify the grab-release-grab of the third egg and sphere but otherwise this doesnt require it. I actually used the controller's turbo on SMB2's 'Door to Door' because I was getting tired trying to nail the frame perfect entry and it STILL took a few tries because I guess the turbo is only pressing the button every 2.5 frames? Then I wound up doing it first try in survival mode's gold division this week lol.

Anyway, after this happened, I checked and it doesnt look like this is expressly against any rules but I'm sure it wont sit well with everyone and just wanted to make sure I'm being fully transparent about it. I have no reason not to and I must submit this to show the tech, I think some of you are gonna like this one lol

I haven't given enough thought to where else turbo would particularly come in handy or even be significantly more reasonable than without it - maybe climbing the air in Donkey Kong's first level. I can't do that for the life of me.

EDIT: I've since done it without the turbo controller and even managed to figure out a simple setup for future runners so if my submission doesn't get approved I'll simply do it again - have to record from start to finish though if it doesnt beat my personal best lol

No Titanic Monarch Zone 2? I guess that would need markers to show where the warps go though.

@Xerclipse Check out any video sub 37 seconds on the IL here for CPZ1 (personally recommend SonicKings' vid for this, or Terravin's vid from the other thread). Basically the route takes them on the path below the one you take for this vid. The problem is the buildup to this part is so fast that Sonic ends up going off-screen. Having done this quite a bit myself with a PB of 35'75" it is a frustrating tech that ties the whole run together, imo. The first jump after dropping out of the last loop is critical as well, but its not off-screen so you can still visually time it. If you jump too late, often times you'll take damage from the electric eel badnik. Too early, and you'll end up losing all of your momentum when you land and not have enough speed to make the skip jump.

After that, if that jump was performed correctly, Sonic will still follow the stage geography off-screen, and the camera will swerve up and down accordingly. The trick to the jump now is using something other than Sonic to visually time the jump. Having a video focus solely on this jump (and the previous one) to analyze and learn from would be pretty huge even for someone who has already done it, imo. I'm still maybe only 40% accurate with this trick. Although now that I think about it maybe it'll be hard to pinpoint a consistent way to do it as one's visual cues might change depending on the speed you come in with.

Well, anyway, its a hell of a trick on a blisteringly fast stage. Damn near faster than moving through on debug mode, no joke. I love CPZ1.

Very helpful! My only suggestion is a follow-up or addition to this that covers the timing for the fast route when you have to do this jump off-screen (the jump just prior to the skip jump could use a timing example as well).

I was really scratching my head when the times coming in for Titanic Monarch Act 2 were sub 1 minute. I thought that was pretty insane as I could barely do sub 6 minutes lmao. I knew there had to be some sort of exploit here. And finally someone uploaded a video:

I wonder if this will get fixed. Its really weird that this triggers the goalpost though, because this room is nowhere near the goalpost and its even LEFT of it so... wtf. If you go to where this warp dumps you out in debug mode, then head straight up, you'll find a lamppost in an otherwise unreachable chamber, and to the right is a bed of spikes you can float over, and an animal capsule - this room is where the time trial is supposed to end.

EDIT: I tested the other 3 paths and their optional exits - this exit is the only one that triggers the goal.

I did 38"94 on the slower route, then I finally saw a video that did 36"93 that showed me the faster route. I told a friend I could easily optimize that better and he disagreed, so I slammed it by a full second. I'm Azure on the Switch leaderboards. I initially got 36"23 but I told myself sub 36 was possible, so I did it with a 35"75. I managed to catch the rotating platforms just as it was rising up out of reach - so technically one cycle earlier than any other run I've seen. The trick seems to be when you start the run, as I believe the platforms in the level are all active and moving as soon as the level is loaded. Its a bit frustrating to wait a couple seconds before starting to test whether the platforms will be in a favorable position when you get to them, only to flub the run and not even make it that far or get there sub-optimally.

I'm not a terribly hardcore speedrunner, so I won't really care to improve this if someone beats it (and I'm sure someone can) but if a new route or tech is discovered I'll give it a spin. I just wanted to prove my skills here and move on. I'm looking forward to sub 35 when that happens. I want to see a video of that.
