### Neutral Rolls/Ladder Skips

You cam skip climbing down most climbable objects in the game such as ladders, vines and climb, by rolling off them while holding neutral on the left stick

### Running vs Rolling

Just running is faster than rolling as Fox (unless you roll frame perfectly on every roll). The beginning of Fox's roll is faster than his running speed but the end of the roll is slower, so rolling into cutscenes can be slightly faster. As Krystal rolling may be technically faster when going in perfectly straight lines, but not really enough to matter.

There is a TAS only technique called Roll Cancelling where you can pull out Fox's shield for one frame to cancel the slower part of the roll then immediately on the next frame roll again to keep going at the faster speed. However this is too precise to be able to do RTA consistent enough to not just lose time as doing it badly will lose time over just running.

Roll Cancel Timing:

- Press X to roll
- On frame 14 press R to shield
- On frame 15 release shield and press X to roll
- Repeat

### Flight Lag
After selecting an area to fly to you need to wait briefly before pressing A rather than mashing A. Pressing A within the first couple frames will cause a lag spike. Best practice is to press A immedtiatly after General Pepper says "General".

# 4) [Routing Dependency Overview](#user-content-fnref-0)

The end sequence of the game is triggered by collecting K5 from WC2. The portal to K5 can be accessed at any point after reaching WC, but the portal won’t work unless you’ve returned SS4 to OFP2, OFP2 cannot be entered without first returning SS2 to OFP1. In order to reach the end of K5 ice blast is required. You cannot fly to a dungeon without having unlocked all dungeons before it, so all dungeon gateways need to be unlocked to reach WC and DR. So the point of the route is to open all gateways to dungeons, collect and return SS2 and SS4, collect Ice blast. DR requires flame command from DIM to complete.

### Ice Blast/Unlock DIM

There is no known way to enter VFP early using glitches and you cannot access VFP2 with SS3 before having entered VFP1, so collecting the first spellstone from DIM is required. You do not need to finish VFP1 and can leave as soon as you collect Ice Blast. DIM is also required to unlock flame command. To unlock DIM you need to reach Garunde Te which is a requirement anyway as all gateways are required. Garunde Te can be accessed via ()DIME, ()Shield Hover or by getting all white grubtubs from the TTH well.

### SS2/Unlock CRF

Unlocking SS2 normally requires you to collect K2 to get a wallet, so you can afford the 60 scarabs to enter Cape Claw. This can be skipped using ()GBS for CC1 and ()CCE for future visits. Save the Queen and complete Cloud Runner Fortress as normal.

### Unlock WC

To unlock Walled City you need the portal device from completing the egg minigame which is triggered by returning K3 from LFV to KP. Returning this spirit requires disguise which is collected from CRF anyway. In Single File routes K3 can be collected by finishing OFP1 then doing LFV as normal. In ESW routes you can do ()K3E to collect the spirit without doing LFV, this typically allows us to delay OFP1 until the end of the run so we can do OFP1 and 2 at the same time to skip having to make multiple trips.

### Unlock DR

Unlocking DR is triggered by returning K4 to KP. Collecting K4 is the biggest difference between single file and esw routes. In Single file routes you are required to actually complete WC and get SS3 and return it to VFP (this doesn’t require you to have finished VFP1 as long as you have atleast collected ice blast before collecting SS3). This allows you to get a wallet and buy the snowhorn artifact to do the SHW trial and unlock K4 normally. In ESW routes all this can be skipped entirely by doing ()K4E allowing us to skip SS3 and VFP2. Returning K4 to KP requires portal device which you get anyway.

### Entering OFP

If you skip CC2 by doing OFP1 at the end of the run with OFP2 then the water will not be lowered and the fire gem door will be closed, OFP can be accessed using ()CC3 Airswim. This needs portal device and iceblast which you get anyway. There are alternate ways which do not need iceblast, but they are slower.

### Any%

While the game considers you to be riding an object such as the bike or mammoth, leaving the map will not cause you to softlock. By getting oob in IM you can set up a trick allowing you to get airswim while having the game considering you mounted allowing you to swim to the K5 Shrine at the end of the game, however a memory manipulation is required for you to complete the K5 shrine and begin the end sequence of the game. This category has 3 of the games most difficult and precise tricks. This category has a route that is just under an hour requiring all 3 tricks to be completed including two of them in a row, and an alternate route only requiring 2 of the tricks which takes an hour and a half by using 2 files.

### Any% No K5E (NK5 or BMC)

Any% No K5E allows for the use of multiple files allowing for a set of tricks called ESWs which use certain checkpoints staying active when swapping files to warp Fox’s position between locations on other files. This can be used to collect K3 and K4 early allowing quicker access to WC and DR without having to complete LFV, WC1 and VFP2. This category skips: K2, CC2 , LFV, WC1 (Spellstone 3), VFP2 with the optimal route being around 3 and a half hours.

### Single File (SF)

Single File acts as a more restricted category only allowing the use of one file, as well as banning void travel and shield hover.  This category requires you to collect every spellstone, but with most major glitches and tricks allowed. The only major collectable skipped is K2. Single File has multiple optional major tricks and routes depending on difficulty. The optimal route is around 4 hours long.

### Glitchless

Glitchless requires you to complete every section in the game in the developer intended order without the use of glitches, however the category does still have certain tricks that are considered glitchless such as [Seam Walk](https://www.speedrun.com/sfa/guides/rk50r#user-content-fnref-7). The optimal route is around 5 hours.

### 100%

100% requires you to collect and submit all Spellstones and Krazoa Spirits, as well as obtaining all magic upgrades, shop upgrades, maps and depositing all cheat tokens in the maze. Multiple files are allowed for this category. The optimal route is around 5 hours.

### New Game+

New Game+ allows you to start the run with premade files already created and at [ESW](https://www.speedrun.com/sfa/guides/rk50r#user-content-fnref-4) checkpoints. The run only allows for the use of basic ESWs in order to get a new file to the end of the game by warping to the positions of the other files. The route for this category is around 32 minutes.

### Spellstones (SS1,SS2,SS3,SS4)

The Spellstone categories only require you to collect a specific spellstone and each category time ends after collecting it. All Spellstones can be collected as your first spellstone using glitches and for SS3 and SS4 multiple files are needed. SS2 is a highly recommended beginner category as its only around an hour and a half so shorter than full game categories, but it still contains the games two most important tricks that all other categories use.

# 6) [Versions](#user-content-fnref-0)

The game has 3 regions (PAL, US, JP) and 2 versions (v1.0 and v1.1). All JP discs are 1.0, all PAL discs are 1.1, US discs can be either 1.0 or 1.1. The regions can be easily worked out by the front of the disc, JP has a unique white design, PAL and US share a blue and orange design, but PAL says PAL on the disc and the US doesn’t. All discs will also at the bottom say “EUR” (PAL), “USA” or “JPN” to identify their region. US/JP discs cannot be played on PAL consoles and vice versa even if the console region is changed.

For US discs, the version can be determined by text on the inner ring on the back of the disc. The back of the disk has the text “DOL-GSAE-0-“, at the end is 2 digits which determine the version “00” for v1.0, “01” for v1.1. Be aware that on the back of US v1.0 discs they may say JP instead if US, v1.0 US and JP discs are identical discs so this is not an issue.

## v1.0

v1.0 has a unique trick, in this version fox has collision with explosive barrels allowing for a trick called [Damage Clip]( https://www.speedrun.com/sfa/guides/rk50r#user-content-fnref-19) which allows you to get out of bounds in Ice Mountain. This trick is a requirement for the Any% category meaning Any% can only be ran on v1.0.

While performing certain tricks such as [Gold Bar Skip](https://www.speedrun.com/sfa/guides/rk50r#user-content-fnref-9-2), the game will load areas without textures displaying default textures instead. These textures will be coloured a mix of red, green, blue and yellow.

## v1.1

In Dragon Rock at the end of the Hightop section the ending cutscene will trigger 12 seconds faster than on v1.0. Parts of the game can also load slightly faster, overall v1.1 saves 15 seconds over v1.0 on full game runs.

While performing certain tricks such as [Gold Bar Skip](https://www.speedrun.com/sfa/guides/rk50r#user-content-fnref-9-2), the game will load areas without textures displaying default textures instead. These textures will be coloured grey.

## PAL

PAL has the same 15 seconds of timesave over v1.0 as PAL is v1.1. However PAL runs at 50fps instead of 60fps, this leads to small changes due to things missed when converting to 50fps, but there is no major gameplay, routing or trick differences between PAL and US v1.1 except one. Due to the difference [Shield Hover](https://www.speedrun.com/sfa/guides/rk50r#user-content-fnref-3) may be much more difficult to perform on PAL, however this is already an extremely difficult trick that is only recommended if wanting to get the WR.

## Language

For full game categories playing with JP text saves 4-5 seconds over English text. PAL cannot use JP text. For US and JP discs, the language is automatically set to whatever region the console is set to, the console is allowed to be modded to change the region to JP.

Throughout the run you need to collect 42 fuel cells total with each dungeon needing the following:

- DIM - 5

- CRF - 10

- WC - 12

- DR - 15

Cells can be bought from the shop but this is slow and never used. There are 75 overworld fuel cells

- TTH (including well and sewers)- 20
- IM - 5
- SHW - 11
- VFP – 12
- VFP/MMP Link - 4
- MMP - 3
- CC – 8
- OFP - 6
- LFV - 6

In SHW one of the fuel cells under Garunde Te shares a flag with one of the switch platform cells meaning you can only collect one of them, this makes the cells under Garunde Te never worth it.

## Chapter Select

You are able to use a code to chapter select to immediately after collecting each spellstone and returning to Thorntail. Chapter select will override the selected file.

- Open a file so that the options are play game and erase game.
- Hold Z whole time

- You will hear a sound effect when done correctly. Then press start game

This category uses an SRM and precise memory manipulation to beat the game in under an hour or just over an hour depending on your choice of route and uses some of the most precise tricks in the game with the lowest consistency out of most tricks.

If you are able to run this game well on emulator it is highly recommended that you learn this run using emulator due to you being able to use tools to make it much easier to practice the memory manipulation and allows you to know if the memory manipulation worked without having to do the full swim each time.

# [Overall Glitch and Route Overview](#user-content-fnref-0)

Every map in the game is actually on one giant map with the area separating the different main maps being referred to as the void for this guide. By air swimming we should be able to swim between different maps as they are on the same map, we want to air swim from Ice Mountain to the 5th Krazoa Shrine as collecting K5 is what triggers the games end sequence. However, if we leave the confines of any main map and enter the void, the game will immediately soft lock us. 

In order to freely airswim in the void we need the game to think we are riding an object such as the bike or a mammoth as the void wont softlock you if you are riding them. We can use the dismount glitch to be able to play as Fox while the game still thinks we’re riding them by starting a cutscene such as collecting a fuel cell or feeding Tricky. Once we do, we can freely air swim to anywhere in the game. See [#21 Void Travel](https://www.speedrun.com/sfa/guides/rk50r#user-content-fnref-21) for more in depth details.

There are some issues to get around before we can actually play in these areas like normal. While in the dismount state Fox is not able to hit any triggers, only the object the game thinks he’s riding can, but this object is typically deloaded back where you first did dismount glitch and is unable to reach the area you are at anyway due to the bike still being affected by gravity during the air swim. Secondly the areas we arrive at are in a deloaded state similar to doing memory leak meaning Fox is unable to interact with anything, most importantly he cannot start the test of knowledge without the game crashing. We need a way to hit a checkpoint to respawn in this area which allows it to load properly, but only the mount can hit the checkpoint triggers. To hit triggers, we need to the mount coordinates to intercept the trigger. Since the mount is unloaded once you leave the map and start air swimming, you are able to get a new object or data to load in its place and the game will treat the data that replaced the mount coordinates as its new coordinates. By manipulating the memory, we can get random data or an object to replace the coordinates with values that will hit the trigger giving us the checkpoint to respawn at, we can then either die or if it happens to be an esw trigger we can esw a different file to that area.

There is more to consider for the run as a whole, but that covers the core concept of the run, void travelling to the end of the game.

For any% you play through the game as normal until you arrive at IM. You open the bike race cave door, do Gate/Damage Clip to get out of bounds by having the cannon hit you while holding a barrel to have you drop the barrel onto yourself to push you and clip you oob. Do Seam Drop which requires extremely precise position and angle to land on a specific pixel out of bounds to get above the cave and drop into the cave to trigger Bike Flag Glitch to allow us to drive the bike around freely. Get a fuel cell to dismount the bike, get air swim and swim to K5 shrine, fire the fire blaster to have the fire blast shots replace the mount object in memory, then since the fire blast shot went through the trigger the game will give us the checkpoint and allow us to die and respawn in K5 to collect the 5th Krazoa Spirit.

Tricks:
- Gate/Damage Clip - To get oob in IM
- Seam Drop - To get into the cave to do Bike Flag Glitch
- K5E - Memory manipulation and void travelling to K5
- WC Escape - To escape WC after the game glitches since you dont have Tricky

# [Routes](#user-content-fnref-0)

This category has 3 routes each with a significant difference in difficulty in regard to the 3 major tricks: Seam Drop, K5E and WC Escape.

2 File Route - This route allows you to skip doing WC Escape entirely. WC Escape has to be done back to back after K5E and failing it requires you to redo the whole of K5E, so being able to skip WC Escape makes the route significantly easier since WC Escape is also relatively difficult. This route uses a second file and plays through the game up to Dark Ice Mines before doing K5E rather than doing it immediately after first reaching IM. This route is significantly easier and safer and is 20 minutes slower.

Normal Route - This route does WC Escape after K5E making it more difficult but allows the game to be beaten in under an hour and can at best get a 52 minute time.

TK5E - This route doesn’t open the cave door or watch the bike cutscene but has to do Gate Clip and Seam Drop during the memory manipulation meaning you have to hit all 3 big tricks in a row. Seam Drop is already very inconsistent so having to do it in a strict time limit can make it more difficult and having a longer more complicated memory manip makes the overall trick much harder. This route allows you to get a 50 minute time on a perfect run. The RTA memory manipulation for this route is currently in development so this route cannot currently be done and won’t be discussed in this guide.

# [Any% No K5E](https://www.speedrun.com/sfa/guides/sph4q)

Any% No K5E (NK5/BMC) is an unrestricted full game category allowing all glitches except for the trick K5E#5. This category allows the use of multiple files in order to warp your position between files to escape soft locks and allow for more major skips. All files used during the run must be made during the run, pre-made files are not allowed.

### Route Options

For the first major trick in the run there is the option of doing either Shield Hover# or Dark Ice Mines Early (DIME#2-1). Shield Hover is the most difficult trick in the game to do consistently and is only recommended if you are actively trying to get the world record, so it is highly recommended you avoid it completely and instead do DIME which is similar to K4E# which is a required trick.


For completing Dark Ice Mines there are two possible routes. The first is to enter the lower mines mostly as intended then do a trick called Seam Walk# to skip to the final boss, this is the more beginner friendly route as its safer and easier to learn, but is the slower route by approximately 5:30. The second option is to do a trick called Bike Skip/Dismount Glitch# allowing you to skip straight from unlocking the mammoth to the final boss room, this trick has multiple parts to it including navigating both Fox and the bike separately through the bike tunnels while the camera constantly moves around and flashes making it very difficult to look at and a precise trick on the bike at the end, failing this trick at the end looses 7 minutes making this the much riskier option. This trick is not recommended to learn immediately, but it is possible to learn. These tricks have no effect outside of DIM, so the rest of the route will be identical no matter which you choose.

### Game Versions

All glitches and tricks can be used on all versions of the game. Using JP text saves 4-5 seconds over English text. Version 1.1 saves 15 seconds over version 1.0.

Single File acts as a more restricted category only allowing the use of one file, as well as banning void travel and shield hover. This category requires you to collect every spellstone, with most major glitches and tricks allowed. The only major collectable skipped is K2. However despite being more restricted this results in the run having many big tricks and glitches unique to this route resulting in this being the most difficult full game category to learn the WR route for, but many of the big tricks are optional WR only Strats.

### Route Options 

The main routing options for the overall run depend on whether you choose to do two specific tricks, both using Ball Entanglement, Fire Gem Launch(FGL) and Ball Hover(SHW ball launch) and what tricks you decide to use in DIM. FGL is not a bad trick, but Ball Hover is recommended as a WR Strat only as it requires extremely precise positioning, angles and a frame perfect input while being 3 hours into the run and losing several minutes on each failure. Both require you to press A one frame after pressing Y which is frame perfect but not that bad, it’s similar to Cam Lock.

FGL allow you to collect the fire gem without needing to use the gold bar ladder to reach the disguise entrance, this allows you to do Gold Bar Skip instead of CCE for WC1 which saves time, FGL itself is also faster than the intended way to collect the fire gem by ()(). Overall FGL+GBS saves (1:30 or 2?) over collecting the fire gem normally on doing CCE.

Ball Hover allows us to complete the SHW trial and access K4 without needing to get the key from the Queen Earthwalker by collecting the white grub tubs. This saves several minutes by skipping the well and the Queen Cutscene. This is a WR only Strat and saves (3?)

DIM
In order to enter K4 you need to collect the Snow Horn from DIM, this makes the time save from Bike Skip less than it normally would be in multi file categories. However getting the Mammoth for and doing Bike Skip also allows for a trick called Cog Skip which allows you to collect the Snow Horn without collecting the 3 cogs and using the cannon. Cog Skip saves around (1 minute), so overall doing Bike Skip + Cog Skip saves a significant amount of time however Bike Skip is a very difficult and long trick with it losing 7-8 minutes if you fail it at the end. If you don’t want to use Bike Skip the Alternative is to use the snowhorn to enter the lower portion of the dungeon normally and do Seam Walk. Cog Skip is not worth it unless you are also doing Bike Skip, you can skip unlocking the Mammoth using Gate Despawn then playing as normal to collect the Snowhorn. Bike Skip is still worth the time save event without Cog Skip.
Overall Bike Skip + Cog Skip saves ()() over Gate Despawn+Seam Walk.

### Game Versions

All glitches and tricks for this category can be used on any version of the game. Using JP text saves 4-5 seconds over English. Version 1.1 saves 15 seconds over 1.0.

This guide links to a visual PDF route for beating Star Fox Adventures Any%.

This guide omits the collection of Bomb Spores, Eggs/Seeds, Staff Energy Gems, Scarabs, Blue GrubTubs, and all flying missions triggered by travel.

# Any% Routes
There are two main Any% routes.
1) A newer route (Void Travel) which relies on heavily RNG based memory glitches, and hard to execute tricks. Roughly ~1h, and requires v1.0 of SFA.
2) The previous route (BMC), which does not use any memory glitches. Roughly ~4h, and works on all versions.

# Fuel Cell Timings
When skips are discovered, routing Fuel Cells is tedious work. I made a spreadsheet that measures how much time it takes to collect each Fuel Cell in the game.

The time used is the minimum time it would take to collect the Fuel Cell in an optimal route. For example, the Fuel Cell Behind the Queen EarthWalker takes 0s to collect when opening the door to Walled City, but would take 6s+ if collected earlier. We use the minimum of those, which is 0s.

Event Storage Warp Guide

# Introduction
ESW is a useful method for copying files, and warping to special locations. This glitch can only be performed at an ESW checkpoint. There are 23 known ESW checkpoints in the game.

This technique allows us to mix save files. Certain save data is kept in "low-flags", and other data is kept in "high-flags"

ESW (Normal Warp) =Event Storage Warp = Low-flags of current file / High-flags of ESW file
RESW (Copy Warp)  = Reverse Event Storage Warp = Low-flags of ESW file / High-flags of ESW file. This allows us to copy files, which we normally cannot do from menus.
RRESW (Boomerang Warp) = Reverse Reverse Event Storage Warp = Low-flags of ESW file / High-flags of current file. Briefly warp to an ESW location, and then back to where you warped from.

## Important Notes
- Dying by falling into a void out is the equivalent of dying without saving.
- All ESW checkpoints are invisible planes, with the exception of the mammoth ESW checkpoints.
- There are multiple types of checkpoints in the game. (Unverified) There are ESW checkpoints, revive checkpoints, and save checkpoints. ESW is a special type of revive checkpoint. Save checkpoints are locations where Fox/Krystal are placed after saving and reloading the file.
- Some areas seem to disable warping to an ESW location. For example, Fox cannot use ESW to leave the start of Ice Mountain.
- The first location in the game where a save is possible is after Krystal lands in Krazoa Palace.

# How ESW Works
There are special revive checkpoints in the game (ESW checkpoints) that are not cleared when switching to another file. We can hit one of these checkpoints, then die on a different file. We will then revive at the ESW checkpoint of the first file.

There are three variables we can control:
1) The **Respawn Location / Game Progression Flags / Tricky state [1] / Weather Effects [2]** of whichever file collided with the ESW checkpoint. Walking into a save checkpoint after colliding with the ESW checkpoint will cancel the ESW.
2) The **Inventory / Health / Magic / GrubTub Meter / Collected Item State [3] / Collected Upgrades / Flight Progression [4] / Save Location [5] / File Name** of whichever file was saved before dying. If no save has occurred since the console has turned on, the most recently loaded file is used.
3) The file on which the death occurs. This file will be overwritten on the next save.

The only things that matter are these three variables. These steps can be executed on one or more files, for example:
Ex 1) Save on slot #1. Checkpoint on slot #1. Die on slot #1.
Ex 2) Checkpoint on slot #1. Save on slot #2. Die on slot #3.
Ex 3) Checkpoint on slot #2. Save on slot #2. Die on slot #1.

This glitch has nothing to do with the slots themselves. In fact, I rigorously tested swapping memory cards on the title screen (in Dolphin) with various combinations of hitting checkpoints and saving. It still boils down to controlling these three variables. There is nothing we can do with multiple memory cards that we can't do with one.

[1] Tricky state refers to whether or not Tricky is with Fox.
[2] This refers to the FX caused by whether, such as snow.
[3] This refers to collected items, such as Fuel Cells.
[4] This refers to which dungeons Fox has flown to. In order to fly to a dungeon, Fox must have visited all previous dungeons. The first flight must start from Dinosaur Planet.
[5] This is the position/map of the last save checkpoint. Usually this position is not used, because we warp to the ESW checkpoint. However, if immediately save/quit after warping, we can load into this position instead. See examples below.

# Example Scenarios
To get a good grasp of how this works, I've included some example scenarios.

## Basic RESW (Full file copy)
This trick requires two files. Get to an ESW checkpoint as Fox. After hitting the checkpoint, quit the game, and optionally save. Load into a second file, and die without saving. Upon reviving, we will have the progress of the first file.

In this example, we:
- Get to Dark Ice Mines on one file.
- Get to Krystal on another file (first savable location is at Krazoa Palace)
- Load the Dark Ice Mines file, and walk passed the ESW checkpoint at the first gate
- Save/Quit
- Load the Krystal file, and jump off the cliff (equivalent to dying without saving)
- Note: It is important to only save after hitting a save trigger after warping as Krystal. Save/Quitting immediately causes a file corruption.

Result:
- Two files at Dark Ice Mines

## Basic ESW
The most basic case for this glitch is to warp from one file to an ESW checkpoint. Here we use a warp to escape the K4 cage. This is currently only used in the TAS run, but we can learn from it still.

In this example, we:
- Get Krazoa #4 without opening the gate (Currently TAS only)
- Have another file at an ESW checkpoint. In this case, I used the ThornTail Egg event checkpoint.
- Enter the ESW file. Walk into the ESW trigger.
- Enter the K4 file. Die. In this case, the only possible death is from a Tricky flame suicide.
- Save when prompted.

Result:
- ESW setup file is unchanged
- K4 file has warped to ThornTail.

## Different File Death ESW
Since ESW checkpoints are revive checkpoints, death is always required. However, we do not need to die on the files used to set up the trick. We can die on ANY file.

This example is the same as the Basic ESW example above, except instead of dying from Tricky's flames, we die in ThornTail!

In this example, we:
- Get Krazoa #4 without opening the gate (Currently TAS only)
- Have another file at an ESW checkpoint. In this case, I used the ThornTail Egg event checkpoint.
- Enter the ESW file. Walk into the ESW trigger.
- Enter the K4 file. Save/Quit.
- Reload the ThornTail ESW file, and die.

Result:
- ESW setup file is overwritten with the K4 file, but we are in ThornTail now.
- The old K4 file is still there, stuck behind the gate.

## Same File Warp to a Previous Location
It is possible to warp to nearly ANY previously visited location on the same file. The warp must start from an ESW checkpoint, but can end almost anywhere.

The glitch works as follows:
- Save in ANY location where ESW is not disabled
- Progress through the game
- Hit an ESW checkpoint
- Quit without saving
- We should lose all of our progress, and be back where we saved
- Die
- Our progress is recovered, and we are back where we were
- Save/Quit/Reload to keep our progress, but warp to where we saved.

In this example, we:
- Save after obtaining Freeze Blast
- Collect SpellStone #3
- Collect Moon Stone (This is on top of an ESW checkpoint)
- Quit without saving
- Die in Volcano Point, being careful not to hit a save checkpoint
- We now are back at the Moon Stone
- Save/Quit immediately
- We are now at Volcano Point, but with the Moon Stone and SS3!

## Same-File Warp to Undo Using Items
This is the similar to the previous glitch, except we keep the progress of the old save file. This can be used to keep items we normally use or turn in. We can duplicate up to 20 GrubTubs using this method, but in practice it is hard to duplicate that many in-route.

This can be used to duplicate Fuel Cells, but unfortunately it is only temporary due flight progression not being saved. This means we will be forced to spend them again later.

In this example, we:
- Save before flying to Dark Ice Mines
- Fly to Dark Ice Mines
- Walk into the ESW checkpoint
- Quit without saving
- Reload the file
- Die and save when prompted
- We are now at Dark Ice Mines without spending Fuel Cells

# Exceptions to the Rules
There are a few exceptions to the normal rules for ESW.

## Krystal File Corruption
In addition to showing all the cool tricks, it is good to show how a trick can go wrong.

The ESW checkpoint stores the respawn position, but the last saved file stores the raw position & map. This means if we save/quit after performing an ESW, the game will undo the warp, and place Fox back at his original location. Unfortunately, attempting this as Krystal actually causes a file corruption.

In this example, we:
- Get to Dark Ice Mines on one file.
- Get to Krystal on another file.
- Hit the ESW checkpoint at the gate in Dark Ice Mines.
- Quit to title
- Enter the Krystal file, and die without saving (ie falling off a cliff)
- The Dark Ice Mines File is now duplicated.
- Save/Quit immediately on the duplicated file (This is a mistake. Save/Quit needs to happen after hitting a save checkpoint to avoid file corruption.)

The lesson here is NEVER save/quit immediately after copying a Fox file to a Krystal file. You need to hit a save checkpoint.

## Erased Files
After hitting an ESW checkpoint and erasing any file, all ESWs performed after this will cause the selected file to also be erased after saving.

This could be explored a bit more, I'll update here once I have a better understanding.

## Krystal High-Flag Transfer
Attempting to ESW after saving on the Krystal file does not do what one would expect. Instead of warping to Fox's location, Krystal always warps to the Krazoa Shrine #1. We have not found a way to warp out of Krazoa Palace as Krystal.

By failing the warp, we have the side-effect of transferring game high-flags without finishing the warp.

Attempting to beat the game with this file after warping to Krazoa Shrine #1 will result in a soft-lock in Ice Mountain, since the game thinks you have already rescued Tricky. The speeder race is unfinishable.

Depending on the state of Krazoa Palace in the ESW file, the K1 shrine area can be loaded or unloaded.

Glitchless Tutorial

This series of videos is a comprehensive live speedrun tutorial of Star Fox Adventures Glitchless. I go through the game step by step, showing the ideal strats for each individual moment of the run. A good speedrun of this category sits right around 5 hours. Under 5 hours is extremely difficult, and anything under a 5:10 is considered pretty good. The strats that I talk about in this guide are everything that you need to know to get a sub-5:05 in Glitchless.

There are some things to note before you watch this tutorial.

- As I play through the game I stop and re-do sections over and over to showcase ideal strats as precisely as I can, this may involve some re-trying on my part if things don't go the correct way, or even just showing something twice for the sake of being thorough. This is not a commentated speedrun, it is a live tutorial. 

- During these videos I operate under the assumption that you know the general structure of this game. I go over specific things such as routing, etc., however the "where to go and what to do next" is taken as an assumed fact that you know this already.

- When it comes to some of the major tricks of this game that have already had tutorials made for them, I will demonstrate the trick and explain along the way however we may not dive heavily into detail; if that is the case, it is because tutorials already exist for these tricks and I will link videos to those tutorials in the description of the relevant video.

Fox's roll is slightly faster than normal running speed, however there is a slight delay between the end of his roll that prevents him from instantly starting his next roll. There is a way to fix this, albeit it is likely not RTA viable. Roll-Cancelling allows Fox to cancel the end animation of his roll, enabling him to do another roll right away.

__[big]**Trick Description**[/big]__
Swim in Air is a glitch that makes Fox, well, swim in the air. This allows Fox to travel to unintentional areas on the map. When swim in air is active there will be a body of water surrounding Fox wherever he goes. Swim in air can be cancelled by moving too far out of bounds or by hitting a surface.

__[big]**How-To**[/big]__
There are a couple of ways Fox can activate swim in air. The first method is by walking off of a waterfall and stopping Fox's movement at the right time. It is advised that Fox is moving slowly as the outcome will most likely either be A: swim in air acquired or B: forward boost back onto waterfall, which means you can retry without having to walk all the way back.

1. Look towards the general area of the big scarab rock
2. Hold L and start strafing to the right at a certain speed
3. Let go of the control stick when Fox's right foot is about to pass the edge.

If you didn't get it first try and walked slow enough, Fox will boost back up onto the ledge as long as L was held. It's advised to keep the camera angle you previously had, as the further you look to the right, the more difficult it becomes to retry.

Version / Region Guide

[section= NTSC-U Region]
NTSC-U can be 1.0 or 1.1
buying a JP disc/wii is not needed for NTSC as the disc contains the JP Files and a wii can be hombrewed to JP region.

[section= NTSC-J Region]
NTSC-J can be 1.0 or 1.1
This region disc also has the US files.

[section= PAL Region]
PAL can only be 1.1
PAL is the only region that does not contain the JP files, therefore it is impossible to hombrew to JP.
 A US/JP copy can be played on a hombrewed PAL wii.

[section=1.0 Version]
While performing Oob tricks such as Cape Claw Early, the game pre loads areas with loading boxes. These boxes will be colored red, blue, green and yellow.
The end of the High Top section in Dragonrock will last for 15 seconds before the cutscene triggers.

[section=1.1 Version]
While performing Oob tricks such as Cape Claw Early, the game pre loads areas with loading boxes. These boxes will be gray.
After beating Galdon and watching the cutscene, there won't be a screen fade transition as you gain control. This was most likely a mistake by the dev/region team.
There is an EarthWalker glitch in Dragon Rock (useless) that is patched.
The Hightop section ending will trigger to the cutscene in 3 seconds, saving 12 seconds from 1.0 overall.
Ice Mountain Barrel Clip (useless) is patched.
Dark Ice Mines mammoth clipping is patched.

Water Mechanics & Plane Heights

Swimming is critical to most out of bounds glitches in this game.

If Fox enters and exits a plane of water without colliding with ground, he will continue to swim at that plane level, even beyond the bounds of the water. Normally the game prevents this by ensuring that all water is encapsulated by land, but there are OOB glitches that get around this.

Fox lacks the ability to dive, but there are a few known methods for controlling swim height outlined in this guide.

#All Water Plane Heights
I've recorded the heights of all water sources in the game. __[Here is a spreadsheet of all water plane heights in SFA](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1naW4dAw16G1rF4Moa7MvmwuVa2GHNiwANsdw4vAp8X0/edit?usp=sharing)__

Most water planes are flat, but there are some notable exceptions. This is not yet fully understood. For example, performing an air-swim from the waterfall in ThornTail Hollow can result in a swim height between -645 and -646.5 (as far as I know). This small difference can actually make or break some tricks -- for example Dark Ice Mines Early (DIME) needs this number to be as close as possible to -645, or the glitch does not work.

Swimming near a different water plane will cause Fox to switch to that plane.
To travel upwards, the new water plane must be within 116 units
To travel downwards, the new water plane must be within 125 units

## Technical Information
Depth != PlayerY. The player will actually be 21 units above the surface depth.
The player also oscillates by about 2 units up and down constantly (+/- 1 unit)

When standing on land, the game registers Fox as having a swim plane of depth -100,000. Simple memory scanning can be used to find this value.
- If using Dolphin Memory Engine, a float scan can find these values.

# Swim Cancelling
There are three known ways to cancel a swim:
1) A collision cancel. If Fox's feet collide with anything that can be stood on, the swim is canceled.
2) An item discovery prompt cancel. If Fox is outside water and picks up an item for the first time, the discovery prompt will end the swim. An old TAS Any% route used to do a Fuel Cell cancel to collect K4.
3) A cutscene cancel. Some cutscenes, such as the sewer switch change cutscene, cause Fox's swim to cancel. Not all cutscenes do this. For example, the Tricky color change cutscene does not. Also, some cutscenes will warp Fox, canceling the swim.

# Height Control Methods
There are a few known methods for controlling swimming height within a water plane.

## Ceiling Collision
Normally, Fox cannot be pushed downwards once he rises to the top of the water plane. However, if Fox never fully reaches the surface, it is possible for him to collide with a ceiling and be pushed downwards.

This technique is not used in the current route.

## Underwater Staff Swinging (TAS Only)
Underwater Staff Swinging (USS) is an incredibly useful trick.

USS allows Fox to be registered to a certain swim plane, but drop down to his current sub-plane height (see the sub-plane section below for details). This essentially allows fox to "dive" to sub-plane levels, and re-emerge when convenient.

This used to be the only method for obtaining K4 early, but we have since found a better setup using Memory Leak. USS is still used in the "No Void Traveling" TAS route to obtain Ground Quake Early.

Requirements to start the trick:
- Fox must be able to stand adjacent to the body of water.
- Fox must be able to swing his staff into the water without the staff colliding with an object. This swing must bring Fox far enough into the water such that the game considers him swimming.

Requirements to sustain the trick:
- Fox must ALWAYS be moving in any direction. The trick does not work if standing still.
- You must swing within a 4 frame window to start the next staff swing. Missing this window will cause Fox to start swimming, cancelling the trick. A human can do this for a few swings, but not for the continuous 2m 30s required for K4 early. Turbo controllers can work too (but are not accepted in Any%).

Example 1) Getting into the K4 room. This trick uses underwater staff swinging, a sub-plane transfer (to lose height, preventing a water-plane transfer to the river), and a Fuel Cell discovery swim-cancel to complete the trick (not shown in video).

Example 2) TAS only Cape Claw OOB. This trick does an incredibly long underwater swing sequence, followed by a collision cancel. This trick is not used in any route.

# Sub-Planes
A strange mechanic we have uncovered is that Fox will "sink" to a special sub-plane in certain situations.

Sub-planes are dependent on the terrain above them. They are ALWAYS lower than the terrain (we have yet to find an exception to this).

Example 1) If you perform Cape Claw Early without Tricky, the intro cutscene in Cape Claw will glitch. This causes Fox will fall through the floor forever. However, if you walk forward and press Z to zoom at the exact right moment, Fox will stop falling. The height at which this is possible is the sub-plane.

Example 2) If you perform DIME to get to SnowHorn wastes before obtaining Tricky, and kill the 3 SharpClaw by the scarab bag mammoth, Fox will fall as before after a short delay. If Fox aims with Fire Blast and does not release (not shown in video), he will sink to the exact height of the sub-plane.
