# 100% for dummies - The Updated Guide

Guide up to date as of writing August 2023. I imagine the category has been broken again by the time you're reading this, however.

## **Why run 100%?**

The 100% category is, in my opinion a much more interesting category than Any%. This is due to its expansive options and varied movement, as opposed to Any% which has become somewhat of a glitchfest. 100% has its fair share of glitches, but in general you'll find yourself with a lot more breathing space and nice fun platforming in between.

In saying that, All Temples is now great middle ground between Any% and 100% which has gathered popularity in recent times. I would recommend checking out All Temples if Any% doesn't appeal to you but 100% feels a bit daunting.

As opposed to Any%, routing for 100% is extremely dynamic and has changed multiple times as we have found more and more interesting ways to break the game. In just a few years, the route moved from a fairly 'traditional' route (completing much of the game in a 'vanilla' fashion) to collecting multiple idols twice and doing large areas of the game backwards or out of order. I have no doubt that the route will change again in the future as more things are discovered!

## **Item Requirements & Routing**

Item Routing is a MUST in this category. The following is a list of all item requirements in 100%:

**Required Items (required to collect all shamans and idols)**


- Renegade Area: TNT, Pickaxes
- Jungle: TNT, Torch
- Caverns: TNT
- Mountains: TNT, Raft, Pickaxes

**Optional Items (not required, but typically save time or make gameplay easier)**

- Renegade Area: Nil
- Jungle: Sling
- Caverns: Torch
- Mountains: Canteen

**Notes**

1. TNT obsoletes both Shield and Gas Mask for all relevant uses
2. Torch is used to burn webs to collect explorers. Not required for Scorpion Temple as it is skipped.
3. Sling is used in Great Tree for timesave and buying Super Sling.
4. Canteen is used for item sliding (easier than the Sling), to manage our item order (see **Item Overwriting** below) and buying Canteen Max.
5. Pickaxes are used for 'Tazzing' - see below.

**Other Item Requirements/Tips**

- Any item except TNT may be grabbed from Excavation Camp if desired + properly routed in (see below)
- Canteen required to buy Canteen Max
- Sling required to buy Super Sling
- Aside from Excavation Camp or the vanilla method, Sling is also given to the player following the cutscene at Gates of El Dorado (prior to fighting the final boss).
- Raft is given upon entering Mountain Sled Run
- Torch can also be obtained from Turtle Monument, however it is not added to the inventory and is lost when unequipped.

## Quantum Idols

Quantum Idols is really the one thing that has unlocked virtually infinite possibilities for routing in 100%. In simple terms, Quantum Idols allows the collecting of up to 7 idols *twice*, meaning that other idols can be skipped. This has, in effect, removed the necessity of doing Native Games in the run, saving in excess of 30 minutes, and removing a long and tedious part of the run.

### How does Quantum Idols work?

**Quantum Idols 1**

The first iteration of Quantum Idols involves abusing an oversight present in St Clairs Excavation Camp. This level has two 'modes' it can be in - the Day mode and the Night mode. In normal gameplay, you access TNT, visit Mysterious Temple, then visit the Night mode of St Clairs. You complete the sneak mission, then appear in the Day mode next to the TNT item after the cutscene. Once you complete the sneak mission to escape, you cannot trigger Night mode again - the level will be permanently in Day mode.

However, by grabbing TNT and then glitching over the gate prior to visiting Mysterious Temple, we can access the Day mode prior to the Night mode, which is not intended in regular gameplay. An explorer (5 idols) is present in both Day and Night mode, with the devs intending you to be able to collect the explorer in either mode. Should you collect the explorer in Night mode, he does not appear in Day mode. However as you are not intended to visit Day mode first, **if you collect this explorer in Day mode, you may still collect him afterwards in Night mode, thus duplicating the explorer.** This flag not setting correctly forms the basis of Quantum Idols.

There is also an additional idol that follows this property in the mirror room of Excavation Camp. While the idol is present in Night mode, it is locked away behind crates which you usually must TNT and it not intended to be collected until Day mode. However, by utilising 'Tazzing' (a technique with the Pickaxes), you are able to to clip through the wall and collect this idol in Night mode, thus duplicating this idol.

By carefully routing in 2 separate visits to Excavation Camp, we are able to duplicate 6 idols, and hence skip not only Native Games, but the completion of Scorpion Temple - another long section of the game.

**Quantum Idols 2**

Found only quite recently in 2023, Quantum Idols 2 abuses a small bug in Mountain Sled Run. While the idol appears similar to many other idols in the game, it has an additional property where you can collect the idol by knocking over the idol container (usually while in the Raft, but not a requirement). This is because you are usually stuck on the raft in this level and would be unable to grab the idol otherwise. However by clipping around the trigger that automatically locks you into the Raft, you may not only run around Mountain Sled Run as you wish (quite a fun exercise regardless), but you may also collect the idol as normal by sticking out your hand. Collecting the idol in this way does not remove the ability to collect the idol by knocking over the idol container, leading to another idol duplication.

This Quantum Idol is typically used to skip the long Pitfall 1 minigame. However, there may be a faster idol skip...but I'll leave that one as an exercise for you!.

## **Other considerations**

### Item Switching

Item Switching is a rare thing to find in this game. The astute among you may think that Item Switching would be awarded upon simply obtaining more than 4 items. But come on, what did you think this was? A well coded game? Item Switching is only obtained from four places in the whole game:

- After obtaining Gas Mask in Renegade Headquarters (the vanilla way)
- After beating Scorpion Temple
- After beating Penguin Temple
- After Beating Pusca

If you grab your 5th item without having completed any of these tasks, this item will be  UNUSABLE until you do so.

In the current route, 3 of these actions are skipped, meaning that item routing is an even more important consideration. Previous routes actually completed the Gas Mask fight just for the right to be able to switch items.

On a funny note, beating Monkey Temple will actually REMOVE your ability to switch items.

### Item Overwriting

- The first four intended items in the game are coded TERRIBLY. In order: Canteen (1), Sling (2), Torch (3), Shield (4). They will go into your next available item slot, like expected (clockwise from the top). But will also ALWAYS overwrite your item slot corresponding to their intended order, no matter how many items you have, and no matter what your game state is (you could've beaten Pusca, it will still do it).
- Essentially, whether you want it to be or not, the devs hard coded Canteen from Plane Cockpit to be your 1st item, Sling from BBCamp to be your 2nd, Torch from Mouth of Inti to be your 3rd, and Shield from Native Village to be your 4th. A good example of terrible, lazy coding.

What does this mean? Well if you go and fill your 4 slots without having the ability to switch items, you're almost certainly going to be losing at least one important item until you get the ability to open your inventory. Scorpion Fight, Penguin Fight, Pusca and Gas Mask fight all restore the ability to open your inventory. Monkey Temple will strip it away. Very annoying when it comes to routing!

## Other Tips

- Buying a health upgrade restores health. This can be used as a free heal at any stage of the run, provided you have the idols necessary.

## **Conclusion**

100% is far from a solved category; if you have any routing ideas I am ALWAYS up to chat about it! Though it looks daunting due to its length, its a really fun category and in my opinion is much deeper and more interesting Any%. So go nuts!

The 100% category is, in my opinion a much more interesting category than Any%. This is due to its expansive options and varied movement, as opposed to Any% which has become somewhat of a glitchfest. 100% has its fair share of glitches, but in general you'll find yourself with a lot more breathing space and nice fun platforming in between.

The current route in my current PB as of typing this (1:48:54) is essentially the best route currently insofar as visiting areas goes - there have been multiple optimisations found within a number of these areas, but the order in which you visit does not change (Diveless Geyser as an example). However, 100% is by no means a "solved" category. There have been routes already theorised where Excavation Camp is visited as early as possible to grab essential items, or routes where Jungle is done in the opposite order to avoid the long trek up Underground Dam, etc. The possibilities of this category are very diverse; it's really just waiting for someone with a creative brain to crack it open!

**General Tips and Tricks!**
Just some general info for 100%, as there are a few more considerations for this category than normal:

Item Routing is a MUST in this category. The required items to get ALL idols and Shamans in each area are:
Renegade Area: TNT
Jungle: TNT, Torch
Caverns: TNT, Torch
Mountains: TNT, Torch, Pickaxes (NB: Picks aren't necessarily required but there is major timeloss without them)
Native Games: Pickaxes, TNT, Sling, Raft, Smash Strike
--For Native Games, you must simply have acquired these at some stage (you can visit excavation camp and lose them afterwards) - the act of acquiring the items unlocks the game.

**Other Item Requirements/Tips**
- Canteen required to buy Canteen Max (must have acquired, can lose afterwards)
- Sling required to buy Super Sling (must have acquired, can lose afterwards)

**Other things to consider**

In ADDITION, it will also go into your top slot if it is empty. If your top item is NOT canteen, and you have a spare slot free after sling is obtained, it will also fill the first available empty slot (bottom, then right slot in order of precedence). Essentially the devs hard coded this to be your 2nd item, whether you want it to be or not. A good example of terrible, lazy coding.
--Bad coding take two: Obtaining Torch from Mouth of Inti will ALWAYS overwrite your bottom slot. Luckily there's no more clauses to this, but it's still incredibly annoying.
--I've not tested this due to routing, but it's highly likely that Canteen overwrites your top slot.
-What does this mean? Well if you go and do Jungle without having the ability to switch items, you're almost certainly going to be losing at least one important item until you do Caverns (preferred) or Gas Mask fight (much less preferred, as it's not required otherwise). Very annoying when it comes to routing!

**Conclusion**

How to setup an image-based autosplitter

# Preface
While I'll be using Pitfall as a specific example for this guide, note that the autosplitter used is valid for any game. All that's needed is the proper configuration and a bit of time to create the right images.

## AutoSplit & My split images

You can download [my split images](https://www.dropbox.com/s/cfx2pc6jlrw16do/Pitfall%20The%20Lost%20Expedition.zip?dl=0) to refer to. You will have to create your own images as your capture card or emulator won't look exactly like mine.
Extract everything to the same folder as your Pitfall splits (the exact location doesn't matter as long as you can find it later).

## AutoSplit Integration LiveSplit plugin
This plugin is what allows autosplitting without having to configure hotkeys. You can follow the installation steps from the GitHub's Readme: https://github.com/Toufool/LiveSplit.AutoSplitIntegration/#installation

## AutoSplit Integration
Open your LiveSplit Layout Settings. Under "AutoSplit Integration" set the "AutoSplit Path" to point to AutoSplit.exe

This will automatically open AutoSplit and give you a warning about configuration file not existing. That's ok. Configuration file will be created and updated everytime you close AutoSplit.

You can now open and force kill AutoSplit directly from LiveSplit by right clicking then going under Controls:

## AutoSplit for Pitfall

**AutoSplit Settings**
Open AutoSplit if it's not already.
* Split Image Folder: Browse to the "AutoSplit" folder with all the images named "001..., 002..., etc."
* Live Capture Region: Checked
* FPS Limit: 60 (This should be equal or above your capture and game's framerate, whichever is lower. Lowering this value under that will result in imprecise splits)
* Comparison Method: Histograms (best method for comparing dynamic masked images)
* Similarity threshold Default value: 0.80
* Pause time Default value: 10.00 (Default. This has to be longer than the longest loading screen, but shorter than the shortest time it takes to go between two areas. ie end of Fire Bombed Towers to Jaguar 2)
* Group dummy splits when undoing/skipping: Checked

If your computer is struggling, you can try lowering settings in this order:
* Uncheck Live Capture Region
* Lower the FPS limit
* You can also change the Comparison Method to L2 Norm as its faster, but your threshold might be off. Do not use pHash with masked images.

**Capture Region**
You also need to tell AutoSplit where to look for your game feed.
Click "Select Region" then select your game region, excluding black bars, window titles, etc.
* On OBS you can either select your stream preview directly. Or create a Source Projector.

* On Emulator, simply select Dolphin directly. You should probably remove extra text information at the top corner, as this could affect Jaguar II and Pusca Splits (unless you make them masked splits or ensure your thresholds still work)

**Customizing your own splits**
Please read and make sure you understand official doc first! Especially the section about Custom Split Image Settings: https://github.com/Toufool/Auto-Split#custom-split-image-settings

The splits images I shared are only valid for my specific splits. If you split in different places and different transitions than I do (and you probably do). You'll have to update the file names, maybe add or remove a few. Hence why I also gave my base images.

* The {d} tag stands for "dummy". Use it whenever the "loading" text appears and you don't want to split.
* The number in () is a custom threshold for that specific split image.
* The number in @@ is the number of repetitions for that split image.
* The name of split does not matter, as long as its in alphanumerical order.

Playing on PC: Setup, Autosplitter, Load remover and GC Controller

# Prerequesites

1. A Windows computer
2. The original Pitfall: The Lost Expedition CD or ISO. I will not give any link here, you'll have to look or ask around for yourself.
3. DxWnd: https://sourceforge.net/projects/dxwnd/ if you'd like to play in windowed mode.
4. Pitfall PC LiveSplit Autosplitter and Load Remover (should now be downloaded automatically, see [Resources](https://www.speedrun.com/ptle/resources) for example splits)
5. If you want to play with a GameCube controller: A [GameCube-to-USB adapter](https://www.mayflash.com/product/showproduct.php?id=27) and the [Xbox360 Controller Emulator, aka x360ce](https://github.com/x360ce/x360ce/blob/master/README.MD)

# Install Pitfall and configure inputs

First you need to trick the installer into thinking you're on a Windows XP machine by right clicking `setup.exe > Properties > Compatibility mode > Windows XP (Service Pack 2)`

You can now run the installer. Make sure to install the game on an SSD if you have one! While we do have a load remover (and I highly recommend using it!), the leaderboard still uses RTA over loadless for now. It's also much nicer to wait less for loads.

Next, you need to delete `C:\Program Files (x86)\Aspyr\PITFALL The Lost Expedition\Game\KBhook.dll`. THIS IS AN IMPORTANT STEP, see **"KBhook.dll"** below.

Next you need to configure the game to your likings. Run the start.exe program found at the root of the installed folder.
Screen resolution should be less than your monitor size. "Enable hi-res water" breaks some water effects like electric eels and raft bowling's water current. Although this is no longer an issue since Native Village has been taken out of the 100% route.

## Controls

**Keyboard:**
Support for 3 directional inputs (2 joysticks + D-pad) would be a bit overwhelming, so on PC the right stick and D-pad actions got merged. You select an item by using the item action while pressing the "Toggle Item" key. You'll also find a dedicated "Sneak" button that was not present on the GameCube (but exists on Xbox). "Pause" is forced to "Esc".

**GamePad:**
Direct input is supported. Xbox 360, XBox One, Ps4, Switch Pro and other direct input controllers are supported. PS3 requires some special drivers (use [DsHidMini](https://vigem.org/projects/DsHidMini/How-to-Install) for windows 10+, or [ScpToolkit](https://github.com/nefarius/ScpToolkit/releases)) that will make your computer see it as an Xbox controller.
To bind analog inputs like Triggers and Joysticks, you have to select the Axis and click "Assign". You should not bind Triggers to binary actions or you'll have a bad time.
Since only the Keyboard inputs will be shown on screen, I recommend binding those to keys that "speaks to you" (in my example below I made them look like a GameCube configuration).

## KBhook.dll

You could boot the game right now and start playing if you want! But it will make for a bad experience, and all technical problems from here on out are due to the quite unorthodox implementation of fullscreen.
The first obvious issue is that, depending on your display, the game may stretch to your entire monitor. But the more catastrophic problem is that the game will do everything to keep focus. And I mean *everything*.

- There is no Windowed mode
- You can't Alt+Tab, Alt+F4 or Ctrl+Alt+Delete
- If you Ctrl+Alt+Esc, the Task Manager appears behind the game
- The windows key *can* show you the menu, but you can't do anything with it
- The game always appear on top
- You have 1 frame to do anything before it steals back focus. Meaning that if you have multiple monitors, you have to click then do your action *in less than a frame*
- The only way to exit the game is to go back to the main menu and select "Exit"
- If you softlock in a way where you can't pause the game (ie: at explorers). **You have to turn off your computer**

# Using DxWnd for windowed mode

We can force the game to play in windowed mode using DxWnd, a DirectX wrapper.

## Windowed with DxWnd

Start by installing DxWnd. Once again I recommend you install in on an SSD if possible.
Once the installation is completed, open DxWnd. In the menu select `Edit > Add`. Add Pitfall by configuring the target as such:

- Name can be whatever you want
- Path should be the Pitfall executable in the Game folder, NOT Start.exe. This will bypass the configuration window that would open everytime. It should look something like `C:\Program Files (x86)\Aspyr\PITFALL The Lost Expedition\Game\PITFALL The Lost Expedition.exe`
- Check "Run in Window"
- Initial window size (W & H) should be the same as the "Screen resolution" you chose earlier in the game's configuration window
- Choose which monitor you want the game to appear on (for me it's my 3rd monitor)
- I recommend selecting "Desktop center", but you can play around with "X,Y coordinates"

## The cons

You can now play Pitfall at proper resolution without locking down your entire computer! There are still some issues however.

- Game sounds won't play if you don't have the window focused (music will still play)
- Keyboard inputs outside of the game will make the game crash. This includes LiveSplit hotkeys.
- You cannot move, minimize or close the game's window. You can still easily kill the game through DxWnd or by typing something out of focus.
- You won't be able to click your main screen's taskbar until you restart the Windows Explorer Process in Task Manager.
There is however a workaround for that last one. Using the following batch file you can tell DxWnd to start your game and automatically restart the explorer process 5 seconds later:

# Autosplitter and Load remover

To use it, simply edit your splits, and click "Activate". By default it'll automatically start and split on loads and Pusca hitting 0 health. If you choose to automatically start, make sure to configure your splits to start the timer at 1.35 to compensate for the time between pressing "New Game" and the first load!
For 100% runs, there's also an option to split on idol/explorer collection and Shaman

Since the autosplitter offers a load remover, don't forget to use and show **BOTH** the Real time and "Game time" (loadless) timers! (there's no rule enforcing it at the moment, but you may as well futureproof your run, with wildly variable load times and an easy to use load-remover, it's only natural PC runs will migrate to loadless/IGT).

# Using a DirectInput controller

For this guide, I will be using the Mayflash Adapter. But any DirectInput Adapter or controller should work. Configurations might differ.

1. Download and open x360ce, you will need to keep this application open, but minimized, as long as you're playing.

2. Click "Add..." select your Mayflash Adapter Port and click "Add Selected Device". The device interface number (MI) is inverse to the port number. So for port 1 you want MI_03.

Note that PC requires a dedicated button to swap items. On a regular controller I would simply map to Right Joystick Click, but the GameCube is lacking in available buttons. For that reason I have opted to disable both "Look" and "Sneak" actions (not used in speedruns) and use Z as the "Toggle Item". Note that the D-Pad is a digital Axis, not a button, so it's not usable as-is.

4. You may need to calibrate your controller (my joysticks only reached 87% range). For that, click on "DXTweaks", and make sure that the values under "Calibration" match what you get under "Raw" when you move your joysticks completely left or right.

Version and Console differences

# Different Versions

While there are quite a few different versions for different languages. We identify 4 main different versions of the game. Console-specific differences are listed lower.

1. GameCube NTSC (North American)
2. PAL (European) and other consoles
3. Wii (aka The Big Adventure)
4. PC

## GameCube NTSC (North American)

This is the first console release (February 2004) and main version used for speedruns. Every other version will be compared to this one.

## GameCube PAL (European)

Released two days later. The only known difference specific to PAL is that the retro minigame actually runs slower, but the timer stays the same. See https://youtu.be/EiraDk6J7YY (untested whether this is a version number or region thing)

## PAL and other consoles

Some clips are slightly harder. Namely:

- You have to spin kick multiple times to be able to walk out of bounds in BittenBinder's Camp
- The backup is not possible without Smash Strike
- You have to use the other side of the tree for Torch Skip part 1 (or use the vine)

Great Tree has an easier clip that only requires repeatedly rolling in a corner of a root.

## Wii (aka The Big Adventure)

Re-released 4 years later. Both NTSC(September 2008) and PAL(February 2009). If using a GameCube controller, the game plays exactly the same as GameCube, but with "other consoles" difficulties. Differences includes:

- The game was strangely rebranded to "The Big Adventure" and given a new childish cover art
- Motion control if playing with Wiimote
- Opening the Wii HOME Menu creates lag, which allows for much higher raft jumps
- 16:9 aspect ratio
- Menu is navigated using the joystick
- Look mode does not recenter automatically
- L+R locks the camera rotation instead of following Harry
- Cleaner fonts
- Eels animation can often break
- It's possible to dismount the Raft in Mountain Sled Run by equipping a different item while going over, or simply rolling into, the trigger.

## PC

7 months after the initial release, this was more than just a port. Lower down is an entire section dedicated to PC differences.

# Consoles and load times

Excluding PC, the different consoles are: Playstation 2, Backward Compatible PS3, GameCube, Wii playing GameCube, Wii, Xbox and Xbox 360 using backward compatibility.

## PlayStation dithering

The PlayStation version looks a lot more grainy due to heavy use of the hardware dithering for transparency and gradients. More information here: https://youtu.be/3XDyQnY5GHI

## Xbox

Most clips are much harder on this version (even than other consoles) for unknown reasons. Monkey Temple Skip is also nearly impossible to pull off.

## Xbox 360 issues

The only notable console in terms of gameplay differences is the Xbox 360. While the game made the [360 compatibility list](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Xbox_games_compatible_with_Xbox_360), it does not run well. It has obvious viewport issues, very bad framedrops making it unplayable and cinematics on boot are also all black with very choppy sound.

## Loading times, from fastest to slowest

1. Xbox
2. GameCube on Wii
3. GameCube / Dolphin Emulator
4. Wii U
5. Wii
6. PS2

We have not properly compared Xbox 360 loads, but we'll still put it last since the game even runs slower.

While not a "version", I'll still mention the Dolphin GameCube/Wii emulator. If you're playing on Emulator, make sure you are using a version **5.0-14514 or newer**. Load times were fixed to be on par with a real GameCube.
Before that, Pitfall's loading times have always been abnormally long in Dolphin, however there was a bug that hid this issue and made the load *look* more reasonable. In 4.0-9019, disc timings were corrected, which made Pitfall load extremely slowly (see [Emulator Issues 12279](https://bugs.dolphin-emu.org/issues/12279)).

# PC specific differences

Textures were upresed, the controls adapted to fit both keyboard and controller, and the physics engine is different. With the changes in the physics engine, a lot of tricks have been affected:

- Harry can punch slightly faster
- Dashes last much longer, and have a bigger waiting window if you don't chain them
- Harry jumps higher, which obsoletes a lot of triple jumps, and changes how other jumps are approached in speedrunning
- Harry falls faster. Which makes certain jumps, like the Early Geyser™ dashless setup less reliable
- You can do "Standing Triple Jumps", which can get much more height than a regular one, without rolling. My current understanding is that there's two ways to do it:

    1. Land on an angled floor, harry will start walking at that angle in coyote time. I noticed it tends to happen on the same spots all the time.
    2. Frame perfect jump while moving.

- Some smash strike displacements used to walk up walls in 100% are impossible, but replaced by said triple jumps
- The Following tricks are much harder:
    - Native Fort OOB
    - Bittenbinder's Camp OOB
    - Torch skip part 1's tree clip has to be done from the other side of the tree
    - Torch skip part 2 is much more precise
    - Diveless setups of Early Geyser™ have to be adapted. The Dashless setup works as-is.
- The following clips are impossible:
    - Both Bittenbinder's Camp's OOB backup strats to get to the Mysterious Temple early
    - The old Monkey Temple Skip strat (the one that goes OOB)
    - Early Monkey Temple
    - The valley of spirit door clip
- The modern Monkey Temple Skip is much, much easier and faster
- Alt Alt skip skip is much easier
- Max swim speed is higher, assuming you mash like crazy
- Crocodiles and piranha are insanely fast, it's better to avoid swimming crocs altogether
- Collecting an Explorer Idol can leave you completely softlocked
- The in-game Atari2600 emulator for the retro minigames has minor sound issues.
- And probably more...
