Hi there! I'm new to speedruns and I have a couple questions for you! I'm not a speedrunner, but since I really love this game i just wanted to record a speedrun and submit it, without any competitive purposes (I think my best time will be somewhere around 4-5 hours). As I mentioned I'm not interest in doing a great or even a good time, I just would like to put my name down there in the leaderboard as an expression of my appreciation for this game. I read that speedruns (even if mine is only technically a speedrun, since it is everything but fast) should be recorded (obviously) and timed. Now, my concerns are these:
-
Do I have to time it in real time? Can i just record the video (using the method described in this forum to start the speedrun on ps4) and the add a timer that starts when the run starts with a video-editing program? I'm really concerned about this since I don't know how to time a speedrun properly and in real time. I'm all by myself and I don't know how to use properly programs live LiveSplit.
-
Do I have to time all the levels and actions or can I just time the completion of the game? (I'm interested only in that)
I repeat: I just want to leave a sign of how I much I love this wonderful game I've been playing for almost 20 years now, I'm not interested in good runtimes... so I hope I wouldn't have to put too much effort in understanding how to stream o time with new programs or to ask someone to be on my side to help me for 4/5 hours or so...
- Is there anything else that I need to know? (things I have to/I don't have to do in order for my speedrun to be accepted)
I really hope you can help me out, Thanks!
PS: Sorry for the bad writing, I'm not used to write in English :(
for a casual speedrun, timer starts at the selection of a new file, timer ends when grabbing white eco during final boss

"Do I have to time it in real time?"
No, this is not required. If you can't figure out a timer or anything, that's fine. The absolute minimum is that you record the full gameplay (preferably with audio) from starting your run until you collect the Light Eco after defeating Gol and Maia. If there is no timer with the gameplay, just have a timer anywhere else that YOU can see, to post your time on the leaderboards (submissions require you to enter a time). Or you can simply time the run after you finish. If necessary the mods will re-time it themselves.

No, you do not have to time anything except for the completion of the game, and as i said above that doesn't need to be done during the run.
Thanks for the replies guys! Really appreciated! So, for what I understand, I don't even need to add a timer on the video via video editing. I can just record the run while I keep track of time with a stopwatch and that's it! This would be good since I wouldn't have to render the video again. Any suggestions on how to record ps4 gameplay? (I also have the ps2 version but I'd prefer to use the ps4) Since the ps4 internal recording system only lasts an hour I will need to use something else. Thanks again for your help!
If you're doing a run over 1 hour on the PS4 you're gunna need to buy a capture card, which won't be cheap unfortunately. The HD capture card i use was over £100.
If you have the PS2 version that would probably be better for you to run on, it's better than the PS4 version in all ways besides graphics. Also capture cards for a PS2 can be much cheaper than ones for a PS4.
I have no other suggestions personally.
Thanks for the answer again! I've got my PS2 with the game, but it's 20 years old and sometimes the controller (which is also 20 years old :| )can be a little tricky to use since one of the sticks is a little loose. I will try to figure something out to record the ps4 run, otherwise I will try to use my ps2 and then I will go for a capture card based on this.
