The board has been cleaned up to the degree that it merits a news announcement. The following changes have been made:

  • Duplicate runs (exact same submissions being in both the glitchless category and the any% category) have been removed (formally rejected/reverted). The rule set for the any% category allows runs of any kind, but there have been glitchless submissions placed in both categories and it was a mistake for me to allow there to be duplicates in the first place. Duplicates only amount to clutter and confusion, so if you intend to only run glitchless, please only submit your run to the glitchless category. It would probably be a better idea to change the any% category into "glitched" specifically to avoid this issue so that change may happen in the future.
  • Game Boy Color as a platform for the game has been removed from this board. No runs had been submitted for this version so this has no effect on this board. The Game Boy Color version is a port that is fairly different except for story. For anyone interested in the GBC version of the game, the board is called Déjà Vu I & II: The Casebooks of Ace Harding.
  • In addition, 8-bit Anthology runs can be found at 8-bit Adventure Anthology: Volume I. No runs have been submitted for this version although a forum post was made asking about it. The Anthology version uses a mouse hack of the game which makes navigation significantly faster than the original release. Instead of just banning these runs, it made more sense to move these into an entirely different board, although the actual content of the game should be just the same (the capsule warp works on that version). The new board is named after the actual published title of the collection, which is not just formally correct but also causes less confusion while searching for Deja Vu here at speedrun.com

With regards to duplicate runs, I would like to add that only identical runs at the time of writing have been reverted. This means that the run that was reverted to could also be a former duplicate, but without any way of confirming that, they will be left as they are at this moment. Earlier I mentioned the possibility of clearing things up by changing any% into glitched, but I will make an announcement when (or even if) that decision is made.

Hopefully these changes have resulted in an even clearer and concise board.

As an amendment to the previous post, a route for the capsule warp has now been found that works on original hardware. Compared to the previous route, this route will be valid for any% runs.

In short, the new route works by setting up the capsule warp glitch by using the capsules on the "medrizine" (the bottle on the very right on the middle shelf) then warping to the bathroom stall (move top-left in the move navigation area). Take a death by consuming the capsules, then upon respawning the door on the top-right of the move navigation area can be opened and moved through without the game locking up.

The Mesen emulator seems to still have reflected all these discoveries accurately so use that or original hardware for future reference.

Recent reports have indicated that it is indeed impossible to achieve the current route of the capsule warp glitch on real hardware. On a real cartridge, the game locks up while on emulators and even flash cartridges, the game functions as normal. By current route, it's the one that that displays Sherman but puts the player inside the master bedroom of Auburn.

It seems that even flash cartridges gets this wrong. The issue is likely the MMC3 mapper emulation that the flash cart uses.

Because of this, all runs using this route have been reverted and this route will be banned because it is the cause of inaccurate emulation. Note that it's the "route" that is banned because there are still some aspects of capsule warp that works on console, such as warping to the beginning.

It seems that this discrepancy is one that few emulators can catch. If you don't have an original cartridge to test out a particular glitch on, Mesen is one emulator that is able to reproduce this accurate so it can be used as a reference.
