Movement

This game makes use of strafe walking. That is, walking diagonally is slightly faster than walking in one direction. To move everywhere in this game you should move diagonally to save time. To do this you hold W and hold either A or D depending on the situation and what you feel more comfortable doing.

Route

The route of the game follows the following structure:

1. Leaving the room & going downstairs

--- Spam through the text at the beginning. --- Turn on the light as soon as possible and open the door, and leave through it --- Strafe walk towards the stairs --- Hug the right wall as you go downstairs

2. Turn on the power

As you get to the ground floor the game gets dark and you have to blindly navigate to the basement. I'll describe the steps but you should practice the route in the light. As you navigate, be sure to strafe.

--- Walk down the stairs. --- You need to open the door to the basement. You can tell when you need to because your crosshair will go red when you hover over the door. --- Open the door and walk through. The only thing you can see is the fusebox. Strafe over and press the middle switch for the kitchen.

This step requires a bit of memory, including muscle.

3. Cereal

--- Strafe up the stairs --- Turn on the kitchen light

To make the cereal you need to collect the bowl, milk, and cereal. Each of these is behind one of the cabinet or fridge doors. It's difficult to describe the location of these items, so watch a run to find them if you're having trouble.

After you open each door, you need to wait ~0.8 seconds before you can collect the item.

--- Because of this, we first open all three doors in the order bowl, milk, cereal. --- Then, we collect the milk and cereal --- As you start walking back upstairs (in the same way you entered the kitchen), collect the bowl. --- Strafe up the stairs and back to the computer.

4. Dark Walk

If you watch the WR run of this game, it looks like the runner just spawns somewhere random after the darkness ends at this point. This is because you can move during the blackout - this is called the Dark Walk. You walk in the dark, out of blind memory (there are no audio cues) as far down as you can. Ideally, you walk to the ground floor - the best i've gotten is to the top of the basement stairs. Our goal is to reach the fusebox to turn it back on again.

Practice the route in a save. Close your eyes and see where you end up after ~10 seconds. Generally, you do the following (all facing in the same direction): --- Walk backwards out of the room, and wiggle your way through the doorframe (make adjustments if necessary). --- Hold right for a few seconds to reach the right side of the wall, and then tap left a bit to not get caught on the bottom of the wall. --- Walk down the stairs (3-5 seconds). --- Hold right for maybe 0.5-1 second. --- Walk backwards down the stairs - if you get here with time to spare you might want to stop moving as you could accidentally walk into the kitchen which will lose you time. --- After your vision returns, quickly recover & strafe towards the fusebox to turn it on.

It's good to remember that this section is entirely limited by human ability & somewhat random chance. If we were perfect, we could replicate the movements from the start of the run to reach the basement without fail. But we are not, so try to aim for at least getting halfway down the stairs.

5. Capture

--- Hold shift as you run back up the stairs - when the prompt for sprinting appears is when the ability kicks in. Get caught by the man as fast as possible (run directly into him). --- You will be brought to the green maze thing. Here you just stand against the back wall, wait 20 seconds, and get captured as soon as possible.

Time ends on getting captured/killed whatever in the green maze.

Auto timer

In Resources you can find a very primitive autosplitter program for this game. It only has the capability to start the timer correctly, and you need to stop time manually (which is easy because you would be waiting for 20 seconds before this point anyways). To install it, follow the following steps;

--- Download the program and save it to a place on your hard drive. --- In your LiveSplit layout, add a new component - Control -> Scriptable Auto Splitter. --- Select the path of this autosplitter to be the file you just downloaded. --- Save your layout.

Final Remarks

The difficulty of this run is getting comfortable with the game's controls and quirks. Strafe walking & handling the kitchen segment can be particularly difficult to get used to, and do not control exactly as expected. Walking downstairs in the dark can feel like a roll of the dice on whether or not you get caught in the room & end up walking nowhere or if you end up in the perfect position. Remember that these things come with patience and you do not need to aim for a top time with your first runs. It's a fun game, and I hope you enjoy your time with speedrunning it.

Again, join us in the discord for further tips on this game, and if you found yourself enjoying this game, consider running some of the other games we run in the discord like Late Work or The Whitetail Incident (check my profile & look for horror games, I can recommend a few of them).
