Curious why no one has run this category. How long would it take?
Assuming you're running the game completely from new... running all three stories themselves takes at least 6 hours with Any%, add probably about 1-2 hours of battles on top of that to find all the monsters. Add in that you have to find the roaming Moisture Creature, which is full of RNG.
Then you have to replay Yugi and Kaiba stories at least one because of Red-Eyes/Gemini/Battleguards/Fusions. As you need characters from Joey Story to do this(Gemini), it would be Level 99s for most of the entire 4th-5th story loops.
Then in addition to all of this, you cannot mess up the run whatsoever. If you die, significant time loss. If you forget one monster, run over.
So to sum up; 10+ hour run, unforgiving routing, basically no action after about hour 6, and tough opponents (though by about playthrough 4, you could have all-Gods for equips).
Would make for a very interesting routing Proof of Concept though.
On the off chance someone is watching this thread, I will be running a category that's basically this on October 10th, 2023 on my Twitch channel (uploading to youtube soon after).
My All-monsters Yugi dry run of that section of the run took me 3.5 hours on its own. The route I have laid out involves going Yugi>Kaiba>Joey>Yugi>Kaiba and stopping once Lava Battleguard is collected.
During what is sure to be easily a 10+ hour stream, I will be collecting all monster portraits during this run, including:
- Getting all encounter monsters
- Fusing all fusion monsters
- Completing all rituals
- Summoning each Egyptian god monster
We shall see if I finish within half a day. :S
Well I did it, I was insane and I did it. Unlocking all monster portraits took me 12 hours, 52 minutes, 48 seconds... and 17 milliseconds to complete.
Some caveats to this:
- I took a handful of 10-15 minute breaks for human tasks like eating and restroom usage during which time the timer was running. I'd have to retime it if we're allowing for paused timers during these tasks.
- I am calling this a "All Monster portraits" run and not "All monster availability" run. I do not have a Dark Magician, Larvae Moth, Zoa, and Gaia the Fierce Night available for selection in this completed file, though I previously had them unlocked in order to start the ritual transformation (which unlocks the portrait). Crawling Dragon, Zanki, and Red-Eyes were all reacquired naturally as part of this route either as mission rewards or as part of starting teams.
- *Please note, to DO an all monster availability run, you WOULD need to complete Yugi Story a third time to re-unlock Dark Magician. IMO, that's just overkill and not needed for this category (and also something I'm NEVER attempting)
- Time concluded on acquisition of Lava Battleguard, the final monster I unlocked as part of this speedrun. Mostly because I didn't want to sit through another 10 story missions.
