We can make it a misc category yes, but since it's not an obvious category I'll wait for a run to be done to create the board so there is no empty lb
So then the world record I did (and all my previous runs) should be in a new any% category, as I always used soft reset if bad rng happens during C20 as its faster than loading
Resetting the game is not allowed after a run starts because the DS and 3DS have different startup times, both with hard reset (power switch) and soft reset (L+R+Start+Select). The in-game save/load/quit is still allowed. Hard/soft resetting the game isn't. I'm sorry if the wording was not clear and you misunderstood. I'll update the wording to reflect that.
Considering this is any% I don't see why soft resetting (or anything) shouldn't be allowed. If it turns out one hardware causes some options to be slower, then tough luck. But as you said, it's fine to capture a DS/3DS without a dedicated capture card, and buying a new one isn't too expensive. Considering you only reset because something wrong happened in an enemy phase, and you would then need to save that second, it feels like a weak argument.
Out of curiosity, do you have timing regarding soft reset speed? That's the first I hear about it for this game.
Controlling a cramped DS for 1 hour, whether it's with buttons or a stylus, is less ergonomic than using mapped keyboard buttons and a mouse via emulator. For a slight ergonomic advantage, the DSi XL is the best "large screen" hardware because the 3DS doesn't have 1:1 pixel mapping. But it's still real hardware and the larger screen does mean longer movement with the stylus.
Considering the amount of apm and precision you need in this run, I would definitly argue that it's not true in this game. At the very least I don't see myself executing as well and efficiently on mouse+keyboard. I could see an OSU player being good with a tablet but that's about it. I do agree that the screen space to put your hands is a bit complicated, but the run is short enough to be too much of a problem. Also considering the placement of Start/select I don't think the DSi XL would feel better
I think seeing stylus actions on camera adds to the run. I ran a 4.5 hour JRPG, The World Ends with You, and it was entirely done on a DS Lite.
I I can see why, and I think I agree too, if you can get a good visual setup like you did. But I think I personally prefer running and recording clean feeds ^^
Hey! I just realized that there is a new ruling regarding ways to capture the game, as wwell as a save/load prevention rule. as far as I know this wasn't a thing recently.
I find it kind of weird that those were added out of the blue without contacting any of the runners of the game. This means that all my records should be labeled as Emulator despite not being emu because I can't be bothered to capture my game feed on camera, which I also have no way to do with my current setup. Considering how important stylus control is for the game I feel this run at high level is extremly unlikely to not be done on actual hadware. However if you want to be picky about it, whatever it's no big deal.
The one thing that reallymakes me scratch my head is that on top of that not allowing game S&Q makes no sense on an Any% category. If you want no S&Q then it should be a separate category. Even if for whatever reason reseting allowed for actual RNG control, then this should be part of the Any% category (and if it was the case, I doubt it would be used because it would not really save that much time anyway)
Dolphin being inaccurate regarding emulation speed it cannot be on the same board as console. I don't see a good reason to make a board for emulation either. But that doesn't stop you from doing runs!
For what it's worth, there is already a discord I created a while ago for AW speedrunning, with a bunch of resources already available: https://discord.com/invite/czQu3mT
There is an emulator category so you can submit there
Hey! Glad to see someone else had their younger years blessed with this game!
- Emulator is not currently allowed no. We could have a discussion however if that's really a problem to allow Bizhawk with the mGBA core, but I'd personnally prefer it not to be an option to make sure the time is accurate.
- I am pretty sure that you need to complete all but the bonus maps in order to continue, but if that's not the case, then good for you we have some time save :D Categories as defined so far are Any% so if you can skip chapters then do it!
Yeah without expert mode you'd lose ~3 minutes on the grind. it's really just pushing more gogols of cliff. not that much more interesting.
They were both created just a moment ago! I kept forgetting to create them, too busy playing the game :P
I asked to create a new leaderboard for Encore, since it changes so many things in this game.
Most likely the DLC dungeons would have their own category once people actually run that.
Hey! Sorry for the late replies.
Usually if there is no infos about emulator then they are not allowed to be on the leaderboard. Mostly because they are inaccurate. There has been so far no discussions about it in the community either, so if you really want to submit to the leaderboard you will have to have the actual hardware.
I'll still contact Frozer and Deln about it
Awesome feature! Communities too small to have a discord server will be able to connect much better now.
Quick question: did you handle timezones? Cuz I received a message from 3 hours in the future and it's scaring me
Hey!
So I've been working on this game since it came out to make a solid route available here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5iVdh2ochMQ2JCgofCJoi3xBKHk01YtR
While making my splits, I basically realized that this game existed here, and I was just waiting to do a solid run, which should be around 1h30 from my calculation, before creating the game here.
Worth noting that I routed "NG+" to include the Epilogue and not have to do anything extra than campaign, since to do that you need 100 starships and that would basically require to do something like all Puzzles too and like 4-5 extra fast maps.
So two questions here: first, is it possible to have moderator rights for this game, as I'm planning to be quite active in this? Secondly, Any chance to discuss the ruleset for this game? I am seeing that Any% doesn't include the Epilogue which is a shame IMO, and no one besides me seems to have put much time into the game.
There is no discord for this game no. the document should have everything you need though since it's up to date. If in doubt or any question go see Baffan or me I think we are both the most up to date people on the route..
Baffan obviously knows more though.
Sorry for the late reply ^^"
Considering you can just press start to skip cutscenes I highly doubt it would save time.
And even if it did for a few seconds (that's what we're talking about here) not being fluent in the language would probably hurt the menus more, game being a tactical.
Sounds good yeah... if exp wasn't important!
We kinda need the levela for dark Yashiro and Medeus in NG. the skills are a neat added bonus more than anything else.
But hey that's NG+ so maybe you can figure something out!
I get that now Hero, once again sorry about the misunderstanding. And I guess I'll check out your run again, since that improvement you mentioned of the route is apparently not in your notes. It did look like you were a level behind what I usually have there so I guess that could be some of the timesave you had over me!
I agree that it sounds contradictory. And it does feel like it to me when presented like that. The thing is as a leaderboard mod, I want the boards of my speedgames to be accurate and somewhat tidy. Thatmeans versions that are close to the original gets a pass: they are comparable, and they aren't going to make me change the structure of the board every 3 weeks, and Wii U emulation doesn't allow me to do that as it exists right now.
Now as a speedrunner, if I want to run games, I don't really need to know what mods want to do in order to do runs. I think that should make the difference understandable.
I do understand how buying a 200€ set up sounds annoying to have a game on a leaderboard. But it would only move the problem somewhere else; I'm pretty sure I would need to buy a better PC to run Wii U Emulation properly on my current computer, and that's quite a lot of more money to invest into; and I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one with that kind of issue.
About the recognition side, well discussing things on discord or twitter, showing your time and investment, streaming it is already a good part of the recognition. I do genuinely believe that this is where most of the recognition comes from, but I guess this is really just my opinion. And if you really want recognition, I don't think spending money for it wouldn't be such a bad idea.
And yes, obviously allowing emulation and making another board for it would make it more accessible. But emulation is still a giant hot mess for the Wii U, it still is for platforms as old as the GBA, that finally had something that is getting close to accurate (and yet still not there), so I'm very much still negative on getting it on leaderboards that are there to compare runs and runners.
Really good idea! I wanted to do so with mine ever since you posted. So here are mine :) https://pastebin.com/umeHrwTs
