No, just overall in the game, I took some damage during first pyramid head fight and left him in red cross state (trying to get In Water ending). After that I felt that James was running faster, when going through the park with Maria. And Maria couldn't keep up with James, which iirc, she could when on normal health.

Could it be just the animation then that just gives that illusion? Gotta measure this with stopwatch or something.

Couple days ago when playing to get the In Water ending, I noticed that when James's health is showing that red cross, he seems to be running much faster than in normal health, he especially gets stairs up/down very rapidly (even faster than with the dodge). So we might have same thing going on as with Claire on RE2R. Risky obviously, but worth to check and test out.

Apparently the game won't work on Win11 anymore, so I fiddled with it a bit, as I hadn't installed it during my current Win11 installation. Turns out that there is a re-release of the PC version by Empire Interactive with their Xplosive bargain price label that they had going on in the early 2000's. That has at least Patch 1 already pre-installed, and comes with the Patch 2 on the disc. Thou, you gotta install Patch 3 and that generic MGU fixer separately still. The disc might have updated audio codec included or something, as the audio worked just fine without installing the separate CDDA codec. Requires the disc thou to play, none of NoCD patches worked to fix that issue.

It works, but as usual, throws the game to fullscreen 640x480 resolution. And you don't technically even need Peixoto for this to run.

To fix the fullscreen problem, I tested couple different wrappers, and D3DWindower was the only one that made the game actually run in window, and locked the framerate to 31fps. Sadly, it doesn't have any kind of scaling filters, so it essentially stretches the original 480p with nearest neighbour to different resolutions.

That sometimes seem to happen. Gotta try out some NoCD fixes, there's plenty of them available, even for different patch versions.

I just tested out the PS1-version with emulation. The game runs 30fps on stock settings and speed, but feels way more sluggish to play. But I guess that it's about a bad port, rather than the fps rate. However, PS1-version doesn't have FPS cap at all, so when lifting up emulator core clock, fps goes beyond 40.

Could be that PC version's engine is also uncapped, but doesn't go beyond 31fps. Allthou, it might even actually be higher value on fps, but if the game skips a lot of the frames, then the fps rating is not correct when it shows 31.

So, 30fps is the rate that the game to be run, as it feel the most balanced and is generally the de facto-standard for fps rates. 31 is definitely too fast, albeit fluid, and 28 is too slow.

Doze_D4 years ago

Well 30/60fps has been the standard since the mid 90's (earlier on arcades thou), so we could assume this game was designed to run at that rate. But it should be always shown on the recorded/streamed footage. Shame that we can't add the game to Steam when using Peixoto, Steam has that build in FPS counter layer which is visible to OBS etc. I tried adding the shortcut to Steam but it didn't fire up.

Doze_D4 years ago

Yea I agree, games running on these low fps rates have significant difference to the ending time even with minor fps changes, especially since this game doesn't have an ingame counter like RE-games etc. Shouldn't be too hard to include, there's different options for sure. But gotta find the one that the streaming softwares are able to pick up, Win10's Game Bar doesn't show up on OBS. Maybe the Rivatuner is the best bet, as that can be set down to limit the fps to 30 at all time too, so Peixoto is optional when using that (thou it's nicer to have better ingame resolution, who wouldn't want that).

Doze_D4 years ago

Well gotta do some runs to see whether it is stable enough for speedrunning. A definitive fix patch for the game would be dope.

Doze_D4 years ago

Well since there is some issues regarding it, it should be visible. I know that it's silly yea haha. I got the gamebar fps counter working, but it's not visible on OBS, so it's useless haha.

Doze_D4 years ago

Hey, I just found out that Win10 has built in FPS counter via that Game Bar feature. Gotta test out that could that be used as the FPS indicator for the game, and will it be visible on streams/recordings.

Doze_D4 years ago

Takes some time to figure out the best settings for both systems. Generally we all propably agree that 30 fps should be the standard which the game has to run on. The only difference is the visual quality, Peixoto has higher rendering resolution vs. patched game + DXwnd.

Doze_D4 years ago

Force VSync option on Peixoto seems to affect the performance. When you enable it, the game runs slightly sluggishly, disabling it makes the game feel tiny bit more fluid to play. Question is that which one runs the game at intended speed.

Edit:

Dxtory showed these FPS values with the VSync options:

Enabled = 30 fps Disabled = 32 fps

So, if using Peixoto, you have to enable Forced VSync to have the standard/stock 30 fps speed. . . . . . . Edit2:

Seems that the forced resolution mode has effect to the fps as well.

When you disable it, the game is stretched to 16:9 at stock resolution, running at 28 fps.

Enabling it makes the game run at correct 4:3 scale, in monitor's resolution and the speed is correct 30 fps.

Doze_D4 years ago

I briefly tested it yesterday, so I can't say that does it crash. But it definitely runs at full 30fps speed, stock version seems somewhat sluggish. Could be that this mod just makes it run like it was intended, but devs screwed something with the final polish. To me, 30fps is the standard on old games apart from couple ones (DOOM's 35fps for example etc)

Peixoto released new version, now the controllers work on the game again with that.

I also noticed that if running any comp modes from Peixoto, it introduces stuttering to the sound.

Doze_D4 years ago

Peixoto brought out update to his patch kit to fix the controller issue, but it still doesn't work. So it looks like that the game has to be run with the stock patches + generic fixer patch + XInput plus for controller use.

This same thing happened on this guy's walkthrough after he walked out of the shuttle bay corridor @ 22:10

He explains how to deal with that, but it apparrently forces you to save the game and reload that save again. And if this is random thing, it's going to be tought times with the speedrunning, meaning that if this happens, the run in dead. Or at least No Saves-run is dead at that point.

''• Matlock needs the Printout to go down to the Necropolis in the PC version.''

I remember this being mandatory in PS1 version too.

Doze_D4 years ago

Yeayea, the final split is at hitting the switch. But I was thinking that does there need to be more splits between start and end ?
