In my 1st casual playthrough of the game I found a way to break the shortcut barrier from the wrong side. By equipping the Sentry ability, I was able to stand/jump next to the barrier and have the Sentry shoot through to the other side of the barrier, eventually breaking it.

Not sure if this has been discovered (probably has), but just wanted to bring it up just in case.
