Hello! I was just wondering, why isn't there a category for glitchless high score level 0. That is going as high as possible as fast as possible without starting at level 8, 9 or even 18? This would seem (to me) as the most "proper" way to play the game. Why is no one competing like that? Is it because speedrun.com doesn't qualify it as a category or is it because no one tried? cheers, Tetris Enthusiast
I wouldn't mind a category like that, although it would most likely not be a speedrun, more of a "how far can you go" run. Unless there was a score goal or line goal to work towards, of course.
I'm aware of only one 'glitch' where you get the free points from the demo's Tetris to carry into the start of the run; but as far as I know it hasn't been used in any of the 300K runs. Since it does exist the rules should probably state whether it is allowed or not.
If I'm not mistaken, Noetic you're referring to stacking really high in the beginning (not a glitch but unconventional stacking) just to clear 100 lines faster. Or you are only referring to skipping to the higher levels by start+A?
At least the 300K category requires a more conventional way of playing. Since there is an interest of time for the SR leaderboard category, starting at 0 would be very slow (as justinman114 explained). Not sure if there would ever be a 300K, 0 Start (similar to 100 lines, 0 start) but the 300K category, as it is now, is as close to playing "proper" as I can tell.
Have to appreciate a game like NES Tetris even has these categories for speedrunning/competing against since the end is always questionable except for Type-B runs where once you clear 25 lines you get the success/ending.
Sooo is there any preferred emulators to use? For one, is Bizhawk allowed? I know that one is more for tasers, but it seems to run with less lag. Maybe too fast for the game though idk.
FCEUX is probably the most common, although someone close to the authors says it's not very accurate, and prefers puNES instead. Bizhawk is supposed to be very accurate, and I'm not sure this game ever lags, so I wouldn't have a problem with it. (Well, unless the game was clearly running faster, but I'm too lazy to test that myself right now. :P)
