Information from this guide can be applied to full any% speedrun as well to a large extent, excluding the coin route and certain strats/skips that gadgets used particularly in any% make or won't make possible.

Language routes

This guide will look over the language routes that are used in Sly 3, for both NTSC and PAL, in fullgame and episodes.
Swapping languages lose about 6 seconds each time on PS3.

**NOTE: Some of this info is outdated, due to the new Death Fadeout CSS found by Hekksu. Some numbers and stuff are updated now but some may remain inaccurate.**

#PAL routing
Any%/100%, fastest singular language: Dutch.
The proper routing for PAL uses Dutch and Norwegian, which is roughly 20 seconds faster than Dutch by itself in any%. Start the run in Dutch, then after the game reset when you defeat the Mask of Dark Earth in the Episode 2 Operation, change to Norwegian. Keep playing with Norwegian until the game reset after you defeat Tsao's dragon in the Episode 4 Operation. Change back to Dutch then complete the game.

**NOTE:** There is a relatively new and hard-ish CSS in The Talk Of Pirates, if you do this CSS, then **delay the return to Dutch until after Talk Of Pirates.** https://youtu.be/9y07o6grqiQ

All Jobs, fastest singular language: Norwegian.
The optimised language routing requires its own job routing, which can save about a minute or two. Start with Dutch, then complete Police HQ, Octavio Snap, Canal Chase, Guard Duty, Run n' Bomb, The Cooper Vault (prologue), all of Episode 2, Talk of Pirates, Dynamic Duo, Jollyboat of Destruction, Deep Sea Danger, then perform the Continue Episode glitch to do Episode 6. Then, when you reach the Danger in the Skies softlock that happens in CE, reset and change to Norwegian. Then complete the jobs you haven't done, ending with X Marks the Spot. 

MasterThief: Norwegian

Episode 1: Dutch

Episode 2: Dutch

Episode 3, fastest singular language: Norwegian.
You can switch from Norwegian to Dutch after ACES Semi-Finals. This only saves about two seconds with flawless menu movement, so it's generally not worth it.

Episode 4: Norwegian

Episode 5, fastest singular language: Dutch.
Similar to Episode 3, you can switch from Dutch to Norwegian after X Marks the Spot. This also saves about two seconds with flawless menu movement, so its also not worth it.

Episode 6 (Any% and CE): Dutch



#NTSC routing
Any%/100%, fastest singular language, Spanish. 
Most people believe that English is faster with NTSC, because of its Health and Safety skip. But even then, English is still about 39 seconds slower than Spanish. The optimised routing is as follows. Start with Spanish, then change language to French after Run n' Bomb. Change back to Spanish after Lemon Rage, then back to French after King of Fire (Episode 4 prelude). Then go back to Spanish after Episode 4 Operation, and finish the run. This route saves 10 seconds compared to Spanish alone (aabout 50 seconds faster than NTSC English)

#Language changing
You swap languages by going to System Settings > System Languages, then to these options:
Dutch (Nederlands)
Norwegian (Norsk)
French (Français)
Spanish (Español)
NTSC English with H&S Skip (Deutsch, Nederlands, Italiano, Português (Brazil or Portugal), Pyсский, 日本語/Japanese and 한국어/Korean)

Obtaining PAL Sly 3

Sly 3 is most optimised when playing on PAL (European/Australian) due to it having Dutch/Norwegian dubs. However, although many Sly runners tend to be European, some people may not live in the locations that provide PAL games. So here is an easy tutorial on how to get a PSN PAL account.

Step 1: Setting up a PAL PSN Account
Go to store.playstation.com and click "create account" in the top right of the site. Then fill in the prefered email and password, select a european country like United Kingdom (example used here) and fill in the birth information, fill in city, state/province and the postcode, fill in online ID and first and last name, accept terms, confirm that you're not a robot and you're done.

Remember to select an address that is in the country you selected. (You may use Google Maps to help you)

Step 2: Purchasing Sly 3 with the account
Purchasing a game with PSN is easy, get a prepaid card from cardcodes.com (link below), bearing in mind that Sly 3 cost £8. (I cannot confirm how fast this service is since most reviews say that its fast, but some say it took a fair amount of time)

Step 3: Download, optimise and run!
With your copy of PAL Sly 3 installed, you should now be able to change system language to Nederlands/Norsk and change game language. Enjoy! SeemsGood

- loot guards in Octavio Snap (coin count 300+ after job)
- grind coins in Into the Depths (coin count 400+ after job)
- buy Adrenaline Burst in the beginning of Tar Ball
- loot 1-2 more guards during Day 2 (coin count 200+ after Episode 1)
### Episode 2
- loot guards until you have 500+ coins (before Lemon Rage)
- grind coins in Lemon Rage (coin count 600+ after Episode 2)
### Episode 3
- only loot if you have less than 600 coins before CHD or you can loot as Murray
- grind coins in CHD (coin count 700+ after Day 1)
- buy Grapple-Cam and Hover Pack in the beginning of Beauty and the Beast
- after BatB, throw Grapple-Cam and go to the Giant Wolf Massacre job trigger
- after GWM opening cutscene, climb on top of the castle and do infinite money glitch until you reach 1250 coins
- buy Paraglider, Rocket Boots and Push Attack in the beginning of Operation
### Episode 4
- grind coins during Vampiric Demise and Down the Line
- only loot if it looks like you won't reach 400 coins before the end of the Episode

- buy Silent Obliteration in the beginning of the Episode
- no need to loot any guards, you will get all required coins during Battle on the High Seas
- buy Feral Pounce in the beginning of Deep Sea Danger

In Into the Depths you can start the last phase faster by death abusing. Time save goes as following: Enter with 1 HP: 7 seconds, 2 HP: 5.5 sec, 3 HP: 4 sec, 4 HP: 2.5 sec. https://youtu.be/bRrFvkyB2IA

Into the Depths has another Bentley skip with the 1st door. If you enter the dialogue trigger zone twice after Bentley starts talking the rest of the door introduction dialogue will be skipped. Saves up to 5 seconds. Last phase with guards will last at least 60 seconds, no matter how many guards you kill until that time has passed so you can play chill and coinfarm with confidence for like 50 seconds there. https://youtu.be/0CU-cdwSofE

This weird "skip" in Tearful Reunion saves time 80 % of the time with these strats and makes the split more consistent timewise. There is more in the line than only this split because you might miss the fastest boat cycle in Grapple-Cam Break-In with a slow fighting with Murray so this skip is a safe and still pretty fast solution for runners. https://youtu.be/wLrgizLKM7M

New Battery of Peril CSS is literally free and saves 25 seconds.

Down the Line skip saves over 20 seconds when done quickly, loses 35 if you fall to your death. The trick here is to spam X and aim the analog stick to right while trying to get through that awkward gap.

The Three Foundation Techniques

In Sly 3 there are three types of techniques Sly can do to make some kind of ground on places it shouldn’t be. Be aware that the “artificial ground” do not have the same abilities as normal ground does. Sly cannot do everything that is possible on normal ground. With that in mind let’s talk about the three foundation techniques, which are:

SQUARE / TRIANGLE ON SLOPES AND HILLS:

INPUT: Square/triangle

WHERE: On slopes and hills Sly normally isn’t able to stand on. 

WHAT THE TECHNIQUE DOES: Square/triangle on slopes and hills is used to make “artificial ground” on hills and slopes Sly normally isn’t able to stand on for a short period of time. This allows Sly to use some of the gadgets on slopes and hills. 

EXAMPLE WITH A GADGET: Sly can use Feral Pounce after this technique to climb up places he shouldn’t normally be able to. Just press square/triangle on slopes and hills Sly normally can’t walk on. Then press Feral Pounce. I use triangle instead of square in the video underneath just so it will be easier to see what’s going on.

WHAT THE TECHNIQUE DOES: Square mid-air is used to make “artificial ground” in the air. This allows Sly to use some of the gadgets mid-air. 

EXAMPLE WITH A GADGET: Smoke Bomb in the air. To do it press square mid-air + the gadget Smoke Bomb. Sly will get the “artificial ground” from the mid-air square technique, which makes it possible to use Smoke Bomb mid-air.

FURBALL JUMP:

INPUT: Square/triangle + X 

WHERE: Mostly from things Sly can use his super sneaky thief move on as well as standing. That means spires, ropes and such things. It does not include climbable things, flagpoles that launches Sly up and such things. (In some cases, Sly can use this technique from these things, but for the most part he has to do the Furball Jump after you press the circle button, but right before he actually lands on the thing). 

WHAT THE TECHNIQUE DOES: Furball Jump is used to make “artificial ground”, mostly on things that Sly is using his super sneaky thief moves on. This allows Sly to use some of the gadgets from spires, ropes and those things. 

EXAMPLE WITH A GADGET: Sly can use the gadget Rocket Boots from ropes. Press circle to land on the rope. Right before Sly actually lands on it, press Furball Jump (square/triangle + X), and then press Rocket Boots. I use triangle instead of square in the video underneath just so it will be easier to see what’s going on.
