Consistent method for getting the blue shell, but with a catch. Opinions wanted.

GregLvk found a way to get the blue shell every time for any%... but it involves using a save state. In my opinion, it shouldn't be allowed. What do you guys think?

I don't think it should be allowed because manipulating RNG before the run and going back means your not truly starting a run. I don't think the savestate really matters it shouldn't be allowed regardless of using a savestate or resetting.

This kind of thing is not allowed. Prior setup is something that violates the unwritten rules of speedrunning. And that's without even getting into the legality of using save states.

Oregon, USA

how would you tell if it was used though? it seems like it would be impossible to tell if they used the trick.

North Carolina, USA

Yeah that's a problem with banning it.

Victoria, Australia

Ban it, but trust people to not cheat. People would still use it, but freely allowing it would be way worse, and give a significant advantage to everyone running on emu/vc. Maybe you could make a rule that every run with a video start recording at power on/reset?

Is it possible to (on a real DS console) start the DS in a consistent state and manipulate the RNG legally. In this video () they take out the battery and reset the time and everything to factory settings in order to manipulate the RNG. I'm not sure if a human typing in the name/favorite colour inconsistently results in inconsistent RNG though. Also this video () seems to imply that .

So my theory is that if we can put the DS's RNG in a particular state by starting with the right settings at the right time, can we then execute this strategy on a physical console. I'm still pretty new to all of this so sorry if I'm rambling or not making sense.

Reviving this old thread because it is relevant again.

It is now possible to manipulate RNG on DS/3DS, and I'm guessing some people would reevaluate their opinions on the matter. I still think it should not be allowed, but I'm willing to discuss this again.

If you're confused, read the first post in this thread.

I think it shouldn't be allowed as well. As long as it uses a save state, I don't think it should be allowed. I'm not sure how a ban on that would be executed though...

I mean it doesnt really provide an unfair advantage and it would be extremely easy to submit a run with the manip that has no proof of it, so I dont think banning it is really necessary tbh

It is true that the video could just not include the save state. If there's no save state during the run it wouldn't provide an unfair advantage, so I think allowing it wouldn't change anything.

Right now we have it so that VC runs should have video of 5 seconds before file select. I don't know if anyone follows that rule though lol

Japan

There’s a rule for recording VC runs???

v1be said it in this thread (the messages by the deleted user). It was more of an unwritten rule

Reviving this thread a second time because it is once again relevant. If you're confused, read the rest of this thread.

PidgeyProwler recently thought he found a new RNG manipulation method for Wii U VC. It turned out to be the same method posted about in this thread; he just wasn't aware of it.

Pidgey is currently doing runs with this method of RNG manip because he didn't know it's currently banned. I told him during his stream that this isn't a new discovery, and it is banned. He said he's okay with his potential new PB not being accepted because he's mostly doing runs for practice.

What are your thoughts? Do you think this method of RNG manip should be banned? The other mods and I aren't sure where we stand on the issue, so we would really appreciate if you expressed your opinions.

honestly I dont really see a reason why it should be banned, theres no advantage in the run, and it doesnt provide an advantage over DS runners. Its fine imo

Changes To Video Requirements And Emulator Loading Times

Hi everyone, please read below for information regarding some important changes to video proof and emulator timing.

As of September 12th 2022, runs for all categories will require video proof to be verified on the leaderboard. Previously video proof was only required for Any% runs, however we are
