Emulator Category

I know that this has been bought up before, but the game needs an emulator category. I don't understand what the aversion to it is, apart from pure stubborness. I keep seeing the same excuse used, that it would be too confusing. However, if other games can do it on the same site, with minimal problems, I don't see why you can't. It just comes as Gatekeeping. Especially with the state the game is in at the moment on the second market. I've seen it said that if you really cared about it, you'd just buy the game. However, it is just ridiculous to expect people to spend $100-$200 of a game, just so they can do something that is meant to be a hobby anyway

The leaderboard accepts times from emulators above 1:05. There's also nothing stopping you from continuing to run the game on emulator even if you can't submit your time

Spending $100-$200 on Luigi's Mansion? What are you buying the premium version or something?

I don't see an issue with an emulator category.

I feel like one should be added for those who want to keep submitting to the boards, and then just keep emu runs off the main board. That way everyone would be happy, the emu players who wanna keep submitting and the console players who don't wanna have emu runs past 1:05 on the main board

we're our own community and we have our own decisions. Emu is not even banned on the boards. there's a cutoff.

What you don't understand is there are significant advantages to playing on emu besides the "easier to record" or "too expensive" part of it.

Not only does it load quicker, it removes all lag from every room that has it, saving a minute compared to console.

Yes I can see why you would want an emulator category, but the issue that causes is a "console elitism" type problem (especially seen in communities with EMU categories).

and spending a load of money for a game and console is ridiculous. It costs 60 for a wii at most, 40 for the game (Japanese version) at most, 5 for a memory card, and 10 for a cheap controller. Yes, spending this much on a setup seems like a lot, but just over $100 is not hard to get especially if you're passionate about the game.

There is no excuse, just buy the game.

I still disagree with the mindset. Saying anyone can afford 100$ here or there to drop is pretty ablest, there's priority involved and not everyone is capable of dropping that kind of money just to run a game. Not everyone has a job, and not everyone get easy access to funding. It's just not that simple.

If you separate EMU as it's own category I really don't see the issue with that. And yes, it's not banned but the cutoff immediately makes people not want to run the game simply because it's there. I've spoken to a good amount of people who are interested in the game, but won't run it simply because there's not a separate category. They don't care about being compared against console, they wanna compare against others on EMU.

Quicker Load Times, Lag, Etc. etc. It's own category, so I don't see the whole "console elitism" an issue. Never seen this occur in Mario 64 or any other community for that matter. If it was such a problem the category wouldn't exist. As Bliss said a while ago, there shouldn't be an issue with it.

If no one wants to verify EMU runs, I'd happily do it myself.

While I do think there should be another discussion involving EMU and USB, there will be a lot of logistics with allowing EMU and a lot of regulation. I think there should be some sort of real discussion and at the very least lowering the EMU requirement from 1:05 to like 1:02 or something.

And unfortunately console elitism is real in many communities especially this one. I don't think it is amazing to admit but an EMU category would be held in lower regard then the console specific one. just by nature of where the top level play is at. and I doubt any of the top runners would jump ship to EMU.

But at the very least I will bring this up with the rest of the mod team.

my opinion: the leaderboards are there to make a place for fair competition. it has been decided, by most speedrunners in general, that playing the game using official hardware is the way to go. so that is what we keep track of on the leaderboard. the leaderboard is not there to create a place for everyone to submit their runs. if you run on emulator, you are not playing in a way that is fair when comparing to everyone else, and so you're not gonna be on the same board. if you want to run on emulator, just don't submit your runs. yes, we could create emulator categories, sure, but I assure you they would not be active at all and would completely clog up the leaderboards. if loads of people want it, it's a thing that can be discussed, but we are not going to automatically do it just because other communities have decided to do it. it is by no means an obvious step in the right direction, there are many drawbacks as I have mentioned and other people have mentioned, and in my opinion they far outweigh the benefits imo speedrunning needs to move away from caring about the leaderboard so much, just run the game however you want, the leaderboard just represents and keeps track of the way that most people run a game

all that being said, I want to just say that this isn't me being a dictator mod or anything, I just wanted to share my opinion. there is always the option to discuss and make changes, but right now there is not really any want for it from the community

if you guys are not in the Luigi's Mansion discord, an emulator category has been created!

It can be found here: https://www.speedrun.com/lmmemes#Emulator
