Hello, I am getting started on speedrunning Super Mario 64 16 star. I Play on a US N64 console (no emulator). I am wondering if I should go Japanese or when I should get a Japanese cart.
Id suggest asking this on the SM64 forum, more users can help you there.
Also note that you would need to modify your N64 slightly so it can play JP carts:
N64 Na to JPN conversion looks almost as easy to SNES conversion!
You don’t need to modify an N64, it’s easier to swap the backs of the carts. Take the back of an old, common US cart, unscrew it and screw it onto a JP cart. Then it’ll play in the US N64 fine. The backs are the same size so they fit fine in place of one another and I find this easier and quicker than modifying the console.
It'll be a while before it matters. I'd say just play what you have until you learn the starts and can pull off decent runs consistently. You'll know when you're ready to get the optimal version
Modding a console to gain an advantage is not allowed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, but you are not modifying the game or gameplay, just allowing yourself to play a different version of the game in a cheaper way. You aren't modding the software in anyway, just cutting a chunk of plastic out
But that's a much more serious mod as opposed to what needs to be done here. What exactly is the "advantage" gained here? Its effectively the same thing as buying a JP console, just a hell of a lot cheaper.
I’m pretty sure he’s trolling, just ignore it. Modding a US console to play JP games isn’t the type of consoling modding that’s usually banned.
De-railing the thread for the sake of a lame attempt at sarcasm/trolling is stupid anyway.
True, probably should’ve seen that earlier. But especially when the question was answered it was unnecessary
