Has anyone ever tried using different starters to the norm in Pokemon speedruns? I know that there are staples such as Squirtle and Mudkip, but what about others that would spice things up? I'm just asking because I'm currently doing a mono Grass run of Gold and thought of maybe a run of Fire Red with Bulbasaur?

There's a torchic route for emerald, I know people have done runs with pidgey and rattata on Red/Blue and Fire Red is possible with all 3 starters, although bulbasaur is quite a bit slower than the other two. As for Gold/Crystal, those are likely possible with Cyndaquil too. Exarion did a few Bulbasaur runs a week or so ago.

OK, nice. :) I did some solo runs of Fire Red with a level 62 Butterfree and a level 60 Beedrill. Currently doing another with a Pikachu, but will get into speedrunning it when I get the chance. And I'm working a route for Sapphire too.
