let's have a "SMS" category and do an "Any%" sub-category that allows infinite continue. If some runner don't want to allow infinite continue then we can just have separate sub-category.

For the timing rules I'm proposing this:

  • Starts the first frame "Stage 1 Moot" appears on the screen after pressing B1 on the tittle screen
  • Stops the first frame "Congratulation You Win" starts appearing after defeating the last boss

speaking of rules, would it be allowed to use the 3 continues by pressing Left + Down + Button1 on the game over screen? that would be super useful for the first run

I don't have a run yet, I haven't started to learn the speedrun too ahah might consider soon whenever I got time, but it's a hard game, I haven't beat up casually

There is a glitch where the player is invicible after mashing UP (or Button1 with jetpack) when going through a door.

I can look more into detail but from what I undersand by looking at the assembly code and the ram:

  • When entering a door, the game set the player invicible flag (0x0308 to $20). I'm guessing the game does that to avoid getting hit while transitioning to the other room
  • When the player transitions to the other room, the game will revert the invicible flag (0x0308 to $00)
  • When UP (or Button1) is press 1 frame before the game revert the flag, the code for "set door transition invicibility" will be called again after the "revert invicibility" code. I'm guessing the game still allow you to entering the door again as you haven't transitioned yet.
  • Doesn't work if the player is already have iframes, the countdown will still be active and it will turn off the flag after some times

Yes, it's frame perfect! it's 5 or 6 frames after the first button press.

The best way so far is to smash and hoping for the best. There are no visual indication if the invicibility is on, the only way to know is to try getting hit by an enemy.

Pause buffering doesn't seem to work. If it's possible, it would be a great consistent way to get the glitch

I just gave a quick try, the contols/physics are different: Tom cannot run and there is a "jump attack". So yes it feels like a totally different game

I"m pretty sure speedrun.com (SRC) doesn't mind, it's up to the community. Speaking of that, there is a discord for tom & jerry, I will ask over there too.

I might try to run it some day, it looks better than the SMS port. you give a try too!

That's true, we should consider the Game Gear port! the game has the same music, sprites and game play, but the levels are totally different.

I think we have 2 options

  1. have the same leaderboard for both SMS and GG
  2. create a totally separate leaderboard for GG

I would probably vote for option 1, it's the same game title ("Tom and Jerry: The Movie") and it will make this leaderboard more active! What do you think?

defeating the dog should be part of 100% in my opinion. it's not about "jerry is waving", it's about doing everything available in the game. Basically see every aspect of the game, that would make the 100% category more different than "Full Levels" category

There is a way to defeat him faster: you just need to make the dog chase you 3rd (short chase) then the 4th chase you need to make the dog run until the edge

and the answer is YES!!! from what I understood you need to make the dog chase you to the edge many time, the dog get closer and closer then it will fall.

looks like after the 3rd or 4th time it will fall if you jump at the very last moment. I will explore a bit more.

so I'm proposing this for 100%:

  • only catch jerry when jerry reaches the end of the level and start waving (at least one frame of waving animation)
  • Beat the level 5 boss: snow man fall down and the stair comes up
  • Beat the level 6 boss: dog falls in the pit

actually ... you can beat the snowman and you will have a stair case to catch jerry! I just found out about it today, so yes 100% would be possible. I'm wondering if we can also beat the dog for level 6.

I think we can forget about collecting all the potion, it's kind of difficult to collect both at level 5.

I agree with you, it's weird to have both of them but at the same time it's not great to reject those existing run. so having a separate 100% category makes sense, I renaming the other category now.

I was thinking, do we want to "collect all potions" for the 100% category? They are on the way most of the time.

Also I've noticed it might be impossible for the Level 5 (mountain), jerry would be too high. So maybe it's not possible?

oh I see, you still have the "push" from the dog but the mine allow you to gain control again, it's like a wind effect ahah. Is it hard to do? I will try some time tonight.

If we want to go for a proper 100% that makes sense to catch jerry when it start weaving or when he reach his final spot. I guess the rules would say : "Jerry must have 1 frame of waving animation before catching it". It would be tricky for some stage to wait enough and catch at the right moment.

I'm thinking to run this game and I really want to play with gameboy color. The only way I have to record is using the camera of my phone or something.

I've install an LCD screen from the FunnyPlaying kit, it's quite clear on the video.

Before starting doing some attempts, I want to make sure it's a valid way of recording

I'm working on a guide now, I goind through the all game and I'm writting some note as I discover things (GUIDE HERE).

I figure out a good strat for the lion, if I have time I will try to make a video. the annoying one are the bat and the floating head because they are random, other boss are predictable or manipulable.

The sword is the best but I think there are some situation where using weapon is useful, for example the water boss. For new runner I thinks it's great to practice the last level using the level select rom hack I've made
