An all-routing scenario. The faster the menuing, the faster the run. I went for bronze: it's possible to cut out some in-game time with gold, but bronze cuts down on a lot of menuing (with my speeds, it saved about 17 seconds).

Picked +25% Safety (instead of +10% Engine Speed or +25% Acceleration). We're running out the clock anyways, so the time the trains finish up doesn't really matter (I even mistakenly added an extra diesel car to the Mallard, but it's not really important). Crashes are awful in this scenario — they usually make it impossible to finish even outside of a speedrun.

General stuff used: -You can turn the speed up or down before starting the level with the + and - keys -Esc exits windows -You can turn off trees and turn graphics like trains and rails to visible from the outermost zoom level (this is less great in some scenarios, since it obscures the layout of plantations) -I used Livesplit, recording with OBS, Windows XP in Virtual Machine, Railroad Tycoon II Platinum Edition.
