Recording Software

New to the site, watched a few GDQs on Twitch. Want to submit a run for Lucky's Tale but I didn't know how best to install recording software for a Rift. What programs are acceptable? Is there a guide somewhere?

Hey Icecold

I recommend using OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) its free and fairly powerful.

Generally any program is acceptable though as long as you make to sure to record the entire run, without breaks and including everything specified by the rules (in this case the start - when you hit begin from the book on the first level, and the end - the last hit on Gorf).

You dont have to include a timer in your video but if you do it is helpful for us when it comes to verifying. The most popular timing software is called Livesplit, although getting it to fully work with all the features (splitting on every level) in VR can be a bit tricky. Though using it just as a simple timer is still fairly straight forward .. u just have to make sure u hit start on the timer the same time you hit start in game.

Let us know if we can help you with anything else (OBS Settings, or how to get more functionality out of livesplit etc ..)

I recommend joining our Discord channels, you will find we are pretty active:

For all of my submitted runs, I've used Livesplit + OBS to record my gameplay and timer. With the game window on your desktop, just be sure to capture that, and then whatever else you need. I capture my timer, my game window, my two audio sources, my mic input, and then my webcam.

For my first few runs, I just used my keyboard to split, and that was pretty straightforward for the time being, and then I learned about AutoOculus, which allows me to split using my Oculus Touch buttons. It's not too hard to set up, but it isn't necessary if you just want to use your keyboard.

And as Tenka said, you don't have to show any time on the video, just have it running through every level from the start and have the final blow on Glorp shown in the video. We can time it from there. :p

I can create a guide if you are still confused about anything! (: Otherwise, welcome to speedrunning! :D

Thanks for the help, this should be enough to get me going. Will be on Discord if I'm struggling.

Will probably be doing the Time Trials, a friend and I spent a long time optimizing Leaving Home. Will be looking at the others once I've recreated a respectable time while recording.

Thank you for the warm welcome! :)
