Hi everyone. As you have most likely heard by now, Twitch is imposing a 100 hour limit on highlight storage starting on April 19th. If you are over that limit on the 19th, Twitch will start deleting your highlights with the least views until you are under the limit. This means that a lot of old runs are going to lose their videos. A more thorough explanation can be found here

We ask that everyone takes a look at these lists of runs linked below. If you appear in the list, that means you submitted a run where the primary/host POV is using a Twitch highlight. Please either export the run's video to YouTube through the video producer on Twitch, or manually download and reupload the video yourself (you can download highlights with TwitchDownloader, or yt-dlp if you are comfortable with the command prompt). After that, please contact a verifier (ideally DarootLeafstorm, or myself, or bill_play3) with the updated link(s) and we will edit the run.

Please note:

  • The co-op list does not account for alternate non-host perspectives that are linked in the description section of a run.
  • Any co-op run can appear up to four times in the co-op list (once for each player participating in the run)

While we (or, more specifically, DarootLeafstorm) have backed up all of the 'primary' videos for the affected runs, and will begin replacing links about a week before the storage limit is imposed, we strongly suggest that if you have a run on the list, to please go and reupload it yourself - we want runners to ultimately be in control of their videos.

(also, gigantic shoutout to Daroot for carrying the efforts as usual)

Hey everyone, some minor changes to the rules - solely to clarify things/change wording, no rules actually "changed" (at least not in any way that will be relevant to 99.9% of people):

  • The linked guide for demo recording is now in a new location on the internet ( 👀 ) and was reworked to hopefully be clearer/simpler/etc.
  • In an attempt to make things clearer for new people, it is now explained in the rules that loading into the first level of the campaign, pausing the game, and starting the demo recording would result in an invalid run if you completed that exact attempt without restarting (because the demo doesn't contain the entire intro cutscene if you do this)
  • We have now clarified that you can only play campaigns that are a part of the category/IL you are running (as was concluded in discussions surrounding Original Campaigns)

If you have any questions, please ask in the Discord server

We've updated the Keybinds/Commands section of the rules to be (hopefully) clearer about what "tricks that require the developer console" means. We believed that the way it was worded previously was contradictory with some commands present in the whitelist, which could lead to some confusion. No rule is meant to be altered by the updated wording.

See L4D1 note at bottom

Hello everyone,

Going forward, we will make a concerted effort to announce every leaderboard change both on the Discord server and in news posts like this one on speedrun.com, regardless of the significance of the change. In the past, we have been inconsistent in posting important rule changes on speedrun.com, which is an issue, because some of these changes were only known to those in the Discord server or those who meticulously read the rules every few weeks, which isn't exactly reasonable. The leaderboard changelog thread (although currently accurate/complete) has also been updated very infrequently in the past, which hasn't helped either.

From now on, all future updates will be made in news posts (as well as announced in the Discord server as usual), and the leaderboard changelog thread will now be retired.

If you aren't in the Discord server and thus don't know about some of the more recent changes, we suggest you read the changelog thread or reread the rules to be safe.

Note for L4D1: The changelog thread only covered changes which applied to both games or L4D2 only, nothing that was L4D1 exclusive. The only change in 2023 that was L4D1 specific pertained to the individual map (not individual campaign) leaderboards - the rules were updated to match the current timing standard (the demo parser), and changelevel erroneously being listed as allowed (despite being formally banned at the start of 2022) was corrected.

Effective now, your demo recording for any future runs needs to contain the entirety of the intro cutscene on the first level of the run. Previously, it was sufficient to start the demo recording any time before you gained control, but now we are requiring that the entire intro cutscene is included. This applies to all players in a run, not just the host in co-op. If you have any questions, feel free to ask in the speedrun discord
