there's no way that making a completely new "game" for a game which already exists, but for more obscure categories, is the best way to approach this, especially when the "misc. categories" dropdown was made for basically this exact purpose
thoughts?
At least in the case of OOT and Im pretty sure SMB, the "memeboards" were made as a way to prevent the main LBs from having like 2 dozen Misc. categories.
Maybe not the best approach to handling it, but idk of a better one of the top of my head aside from adding a ton of Misc. categories to the games.
As long as people run them, what's the downside to having a shitload of categories?
Not saying there is a downside, just that a lot of mods have the thought of "I dont want to clutter the LB with a lot of categories that only have 1 or 2 runs".
But I agree that having all those categories really isnt that big of a deal.
one thing that comes to mind is if the misc. categories dropdown could have a button at the bottom for hyper-arbitrary categories, that brings you to a separate page for it?
it's just like, having a separate "game" made for something that isn't a separate game, that seems so incredibly stupid
Hey now, OOT Dank% is far from stupid, it's the most prestigious run I've ever done

Hiding misc. categories isn't about 'shame.' It's about letting new runners know which categories are most important to the community.
A better name for these would probably be "category extensions". If moderators want to change it to that feel free, or we might make this change overall to better standardize things.
My opinion of this is that it's fine specifically for highly popular games as temporary solution to a current shortcoming of the site. I think the ideal situation would be that the site lets you have "multiple full game and IL boards" per board, such that there can be multiple tracked boards within a board. That's the issue creating most of the desire for separate tracking. My hope has been to get the functionality to merge these back eventually. I've explicitly mentioned this to at least a couple people who have created these boards, but not all of them.
This problem also comes up for games with substantially different modes within games that aren't trackable by similar variables. One example that comes to mind is a separate game mode in Resident Evil: Revelations: http://www.speedrun.com/rev2raid http://www.speedrun.com/rev2raid
