Wondered if we could get a category set for "BumBop%"?

Rules:

The timer starts on file select, and ends when "SOCKO" is fully displayed on screen after hitting the bum (as in, the transition animation from the bum to socko has fully completed)

Popcorn_Cannon, NESs7or9, and myself have been running it for fun, but it would be cool if we could get an official chart for the game.

When I started moderating leaderboards, I was specifically instructed by the then-owner of this site to clean up various NES boards that had categories that had arbitrary goals and didn't involve game completion. The consensus of the community was that creating "meme" categories cheapened the value of the very thing this site was created to keep track of. I personally felt that arbitrary categories made boards look messy and unprofessional.

I am truly happy that the three of you enjoyed speedrunning this game with an unusual goal in mind. But in continuing to uphold the standards of the community to which I continue to contribute, I won't be creating a category for it.

I appreciate the response, and respect your take. While not looking for a fight or argument, I'd like to leave a contrasting opinion that meme/fun runs are a great way to introduce people interested in speedrunning to dip their toe in the water and get an idea either of the game itself, or of speedrunning as a whole.

I see how meme runs can be a "cheap" way to stack you trophy score, though. I think the best of both worlds would require a change to the site that allows a separate section on profiles altogether that weigh/separate the "fun" runs from the more serious completionist runs. So yeah, I get that would probably never happen haha.

Thanks again.

Well it's been almost a year now, and people are still running this meme category, more people than ever. While I get that it seems like a cheap meme category because it doesn't complete the game, it is fun, people like running it, and watching it. I feel like it would bring more attention to the game in the long run.

I feel like regardless the end goal, anything that showcases high level execution should be worth consideration for it's own caregory. I'm thinking the answer is still going to be "No.", but if it would sway the decision any, I'd be more than willing to mod the runs for the category as to not burden the main mods.

While I do agree with NESCardinality's take on keeping boards clean and somewhat professional, I do see the value in people finding new ways to enjoy games in the context of speed running. If people want a board for a category where the rules are clear and there's demand for such a category, then why not? Especially if such a category keeps the game alive more than the main categories.

The main issue I see is the risk of cluttering. Such a category also wouldn't fit in with the main categories, especially since it's not a full game category. Usually this kind of category could be offset into a category extensions board, but I don't think there's enough content in this game to warrant such a board. In addition, I know in particular that NES boards on this website tend to be particularly strict and formal. With that in mind, my intention is to balance that with the fact that there are misc categories that people would like to run. Therefor I have two proposals for BumBop:

  1. Add a Misc category, and then include it under that.
  2. Add it as a level category.

Would either of these two work? If not, do you have any suggestions on how this category would fit?

You volunteering to be a moderator is persuasive, not only because you would moderate BumBop, but you've also been active on the main board. I haven't been too active in the recent years when it comes to speedrunning so I added NESCardinality because of their reputation.

Arguably my biggest mistake when it comes to moderating this board has been to allow people to upload their glitchless runs as regular any% as well (same run as both categories), but that's a different topic. The point is that I wouldn't want to make a similar mistake again here. I'm a bit late to this discussion and initially figured this could be solved in DM's but I think it is more appropriate that I addressed it here. That being said, if you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to DM me.

Significant board changes

The board has been cleaned up to the degree that it merits a news announcement. The following changes have been made:
