This guide is written for seasoned WoW players who are looking for something fun and interesting to with their game time. It's not recommended for a brand new WoW player to do speedruns unless they have run other games in the past and are looking for something different. WoW speedruns are geared towards players who have extensive knowledge of the game and lots of gear/gold. While you do not need to be an expert on WoW to attempt speedrunning, having a decent amount of knowledge and capital is highly advantageous. For the purpose of this guide, I will assume you know WoW fairly well but are new to speedrunning.

**{B1} What is speedrunning**

A speedrun is the act of completing a game/objective as fast as possible. There are many different types of speedruns with different rules and conditions for completion. The two most common variants are "Any%" and "100%". Any% means complete the game as fast as possible utilizing all available glitches, bugs, warps, etc. 100% means complete the game by collecting all available collectables, rare items and other things listed under the game's ruleset, sometimes this also utilizes glitches and what not.

Different variants of speedrunning branch out almost into infinity, any condition could be set as a speedrun objective. That would be dependant on the moderators and community of that game. Rules can differ between runs so always make sure to read them before the attempt to avoid frustration later. This is very important; nothing is more disappointing than completing a run and realizing you forgot something or used that thing you shouldn't have.

Timing is the most important thing in speedruns. Having accurate and proper timing is imperative to every single one. For almost all speedruns, the software timer Livesplit is used and recorded along side the run. You can also render the video and add a timer widget after but it must be accurate and work correctly. Different runs can have different start/stop times so make sure you know when to start and stop the timer. There are links to the recommended software in Section E.

**{B2} How WoW speedruns differ from other games**

In most other games everyone is able to start at the exact same spot with the exact same potential. You power on the whatever, load up the game and and play. WoW Speedruns are very gear, item, and gold intensive. Sometimes requiring ungodly hours of farming to procure. While at an entry level you can have little to no gear and still do well, at the competitive level it can get quite lucrative. Other than that, speedruns here follow the similar format of completing an objective as fast as possible with some ruleset. There are also multiple categories for most runs to spice things up and change how the run is completed.

If you are looking to go as fast as possible, it may be necessary to reroll a character specifically for speedruns. Certain choices have advantages and disadvantages over other ones. New speedrunners are encouraged to do their runs on a class they know the best, regardless on how well suited the race/class combo are for speedruns until they get a feel for everything.

**{C1} Race**

There is much debate as to what is the "best" choice is and even that changes all the time. The following are not in any particular order of usefulness nor are these the only suitable races. They are most used races currently in speedrunning.

**{C2} Class**

As with the race choice there is much debate on which class is the best. This is a list of commonly used classes in speedruns. Some classes were omitted because we haven't seen anyone do a run on them yet, and I don't know how all the classes work like I do my main few. Once again, anything could be amazing in the right hands. Play what you know best.

**{C3} Gear**

In general, you will want to hold onto any gear that has +speed/sockets on it. Other than that gear will depend on many different factors. If you're looking for suggestions, ask a speedrunner who plays the class you're interested in. We are always happy to answer any questions :D

**{C4} Professions**

Right now, one of the best professions for speedrunning would be engineering. It gives access to Rocket Boots Xtreme which increase your run speed by tons, a slowfall cape that preserves speed unlike a glider, and many more cool things that are good for going fast. Other professions are useful as well like alchemy for making potions and what not. But engineering stands way above the rest. Pick whatever you like as the 2nd profession as it doesn't matter that much.

Many different items and buffs are used for speedruns, but these are the main few that almost all speedrunners have in their inventories:

[center]__{D} Leaderboards__[/center]
We have two different leaderboards for speedruns; Full-game and Level. The Full-game leaderboard contains levelling (everything from 1-10 to 1-110) and collections of raids/dungeons (eg. All Vanilla Raids, All Lich King Dungeons, etc). The Level leaderboard has all the individual raids that are currently soloable (up to and including HFC). There are new categories being added all the time when something arises. If you think it should be a run, suggest it in discord/forums and it might make it on the boards.

**{E1} OBS/recording software**

There are so many different choices when it comes to recording software. Feel free to use any one you are comfortable with. If you don't know much about them and/or don't have dosh to spend on software, look no further than Open Broadcaster Software (OBS). It's a free recording studio that can handle streams as well as recordings and is fully loaded with tonnes of features.

**{E2} Livesplit/timer**
	
This one comes down to personal preference. There are two valid ways to time a run; Add a timer in video rendering software and making it frame accurate, or record a timer overlayed with the video during the run. This is what Livesplit does. It's a functional timer that has hotkeys and customizability out the wazoo. Combining this with recording software like OBS is how most speedruns are captured and saved. Getting into the more advanced features of Livesplit can be daunting but there are plenty of great guides out there on the subject.

One of the best ways to learn how to speedrun is to watch other speedruners videos. Look up the run that interests you and have a look at what the current world record holder does. Then try to do what they did. If you get a bad time don't be discouraged, these records are often contested and optimized over periods of time to be as efficient as possible. Often utilizing glitches, difficult strategies, funny items and much more. Practice makes perfect, the more runs you do the faster your time gets.

Asking questions is another great way to learn some information. The forums and discord are your best bets at reaching other players. You may also be able to catch someone streaming on twitch or youtube and ask them directly. We're happy to help because inquiring minds just gotta know!

ICC Speedrun Tricks

These are tricks specifically for improving your ICC Raid time.

Glider Glitch:
This glitch with normal gliders has been patched out, however, you can still fly through with the Demon Hunters glide.

This glitch allows you to bypass a miniboss, the Dreamwalker boss fight, and a timed miniboss-esqe horde mode. It will take you directly to the Sindragosa fight, and upon riding the elevator back up, you can run straight into the final teleporter to the Crowned King himself, Arthas.

Hello, my name is Ian, on speedrun.com/twitch my handle is vortox and my in game name is dunk. I am a fairly decent speedrunner/death knight enthusiast and I’ve decided to make this guide to help anyone that wants to start running as a death knight get set up. While death knights are generally considered immobile(rightfully so) with some optimization they can become some of the best runners in the game, as plate wearers they have access to the best legendary for speedrunning(aggramar’s stride), as well as access to the runeblade of baron rivendare for an extra 10% movespeed. While they lack the baseline mobility other classes bring to the table, with optimization they can become consistently faster than almost any other. Another relevant strength they bring to the table is their excellent clearing ability, with both the main specs having a no cooldown ranged aoe ability they can clear through trash much easier than most classes and keep bear tartare flowing.

All races save pandaren can be a death knight, and for the most part it doesn’t matter which one you choose, but if you want to save every single second possible this may be important to you, races that benefit the class are as follows

                            Human:
The Human Spirit: 2% extra benefit from every secondary stat, this will help you deal slightly more dps for bosses you cannot one shot, and will give you slightly more haste for movespeed with aggramar’s stride, nothing insane, but noticeable and reliable

Every man for Himself: This doesn’t come up very often but every now it comes in clutch and gets you out of a run-killing stun, don’t sleep on this.

                            Night Elf
Quickness: Extra 2% movespeed, solid bonus

Touch of Elune: 1% haste during the night, 1% crit during the day, if you run during the night this is a very solid bonus

                             Gnome

Nimble Fingers:1% haste, solid bonus

Escape Artist: Removes all slows, not too useful, except for icc where it is a godsend

                             Worgen

Darkflight: Increases movespeed by 40%, this stacks with bear tartare, making this an extremely useful ability
                              Troll

Berserking: 15% haste for 10 seconds, a fair movespeed boost but nothing gamebreaking

Da Voodoo Shuffle: Reduces the duration of movement imparing effects for 15%, nearly useless, but not completely so

                             Goblin
 
Time is money: 1% haste increase, same as above, decent boost

Rocket jump: Haven’t tested this very much, might be a slight speed boost overall, at worst it means you don’t have to buy avalanche elixir

Overall I would say night elf is the best choice, worgen's coming up in second(they beat out nelfs hard if the run is shorter i.e. gruul's lair/magtheridon's lair),  with humans and trolls coming in distant third and gnome being the best if you want a dedicated ICC toon

Frost
First with the best spec overall for raid clearing is frost, the main strength of this spec comes from its very nice burst coupled with a hungering rune weapon after every boss kill, giving a very good uptime on a 20% haste buff, keeping you on a very good pace

Most of these talents are changeable with the exception of hungering rune weapon

Unholy
This spec is also quite good, and edges out frost on some raids, while also being the best for all dungeon categories, the main advantage over frost in this aspect is wraith walk becoming a movespeed increase over bear tartare, edging out HRW after about 2 minutes(since the cooldown does not reset in dungeons) as well as soul reaper being a very viable movespeed increase when enemies live long enough for a festering strike+soul reaper to not kill them outright

Unlike the frost talents I would not change any of these talents, with the exception of infected claws, I will explain why I believe these to be the optimal talents below.

1st Tier
Ebon fever greatly increases not only your overall dps but how fast you can kill enemies from a distance, bursting sores is slightly better burst on boss fights but is not worth taking comparatively. AWS is inviable

2nd Tier
BRW helps out your burst on bosses tremendously, pestilent pustules is next to useless as you won’t be popping wounds very much throughout any run, and epidemic is completely useless, as most enemies will either rot down from ebon fever, or be clawing shadowed down before your bear tartare runs out

3rd Tier
Clawing Shadows slightly edges out unholy frenzy in usefullness, it is slightly worse in burst situations, but is very useful when you need to do a bit more damage to a ranged enemy to chain your bear tartare, or you want to kite some mobs from a pack, rather than burn them all down from your dots, castigator is never worth considering.

4th Tier
On the surface none of these seem useful, but you can proc sephuz’s active off of trash with asphyxiate, which makes it slightly more useful than the others

5th Tier
Pretty clear choice, one of these talents increases your mobility, so you pick that talent

6th Tier
If you are facing a boss with enough health to require you to use your pets you should use infected claws, if you are running a category where the trash is not always being one shot(like all WoD dungeons) It can be beneficial to use necrosis in combination with clawing shadows.

7th Tier
Soul reaper is better for burst and better for movement, easy choice.

Blood
Blood is much more niche, with very limited/slow ranged damage it can be difficult to chain bear tartare, the main usage is when there is little killing involved as the 10% haste from boneshield makes you run faster over long distances compared to unholy’s wraith walk or frosts HRW

 As with frost almost all of these are interchangeable, the only exception being march of the damned

In general you want to keep any gear with speed on it, besides that the best gear possible is crafted gear that rolls all haste, as far as legendaries you want aggramar’s stride and sephuz’s secret. Depending on the run you will swap between your artifact weapon and the runeblade of baron rivendare, depending entirely on how quickly you can kill the enemies in that run, you will want to enchant your rings with haste, gem for haste, and enchant your cloak with gift of haste from warlords of draenor.

If you do not have aggramar's stride you can get nitro boost x-treme, it is nowhere near as useful, but is the best substitute

The most important is bear tartare, killing an enemy with bear tartare will give you a 70% movespeed buff for 5 seconds, keeping this uptime as close to 100% as possible is critical for a good run in any category

The second most important are the drums of fury(you can also use drums of the mountain), while this is much less important in dungeon categories, getting a 40 second ~30% movespeed buff every time you kill a boss is insane, and carries you through longer raid categories

Another important consumablet is skystep potions, these are essential if you want to save that extra 5-10 seconds that makes a PB a WR, nothing to sleep on.

Gunshoes range from extremely useful to useless dependant entirely on the category, if you are outside during an extended part of the run these are extremely useful, if not they aren’t worth picking up

Another noteable consumable is the avalanche potion, this lets you fall great distances safely, which is important since goblin gliders are no longer useable in raids

Bandages are useless in every category except for ICC all bosses where they are required, don’t forget bandages if you want to run ICC all bosses as a DK

Professions are not too important so I’ll be brief, engineering is useful for the nitro boost enchant on your belt, which lets you save money not buying skystep potions and being almost as useful as them, as well as letting you craft your own gunshoes. In the same vein alchemy is good for crafting your own skystep potions.

OBS/Livesplit Quickstart Guide

This guide aims to have you up and running with recording software and a timer for speedruns quick and easy.

**Step 1: Download the things**

**Step 2: Install the things**

Install both of those programs. After that we will begin by launching OBS.

When starting out, it's much easier to record than to stream. Simply click start/stop recording and your video file is made. Feel free to play around here and look at some more in-depth guides about recording/streaming with obs. But we're going fast and have no time for that in this guide.

**Step 3: Adding WoW to OBS**

First thing you want to do is click that plus sign under sources and follow the screens. You'll want to select game capture.

Now WoW has been added to OBS. You can resize the source by dragging the corners or make it fit to the screen by doing this:

If you wish to use the layout and split provided simply right click on livesplit and select "open layout->from file...". Then navigate to wherever you saved it and open it. Do the same for the split by selecting "open splits". At this point it should look similar to the one in the screenshot.

**Step 4: Adding Livesplit to OBS**

Click that plus sign again and follow along. This time instead of doing a game capture we do a window capture.

You can resize this and put it wherever you like, even do some fancy things with filters and chroma keys.

Grand Success! All you have to do now is start recording, hit the timer and go. Then make sure to stop the timer and recording when the run is over :P

You can set your Livesplit hotkeys to whatever you like. They can be accessed by right-clicking on Livesplit and selecting "settings". Make sure the keys are comfortably set up. These are my settings:

Skip to the CoS boss in the Deaths of Chromie scenario with a demon hunter

I know this isn't part of the leaderboards but I had to share this trick to make everything so easy in CoS for DHs. I was getting annoyed with the bad rng I got with the boxes, and doing the area the normal way took far too long. This is what I came up with...

There is an invisible wall to the left of where you jump so if you go too far that way you will stop and go straight down. Also the dash sometimes doesn't keep your momentum and you fall anyways. It happens. You want to aim between the gates or in front of them.
