Well, I was called to look into those rulechanges, since it was unclear, where they even came from.
First and foremost: I reverted most of the rule changes. Emulator Runs and Resetting will be allowed and do not have a seperate category again. Music needs to be on for the entirety for the run.
I personally think just banning Emulators and Capure Card recordings just restricts people from trying to learn, how to speedrun the game. There is a reason, why you can mark emulator runs to begin with on the leaderboards and especially for a game with that few runners, it should not be that restrictive. Also you can do precise and really fast inputs on an actual console and until this day, nobody has really beaten an actual console run with an emulator, neither on AWDS, or AW4
As for the advantages the regarding regional / console differences: Those things will always exist and in the greater scheme of things, it doesn't make that huge of a difference as usually reloading the save is usually the fastest method. So why forbid slower resetting methods, when it does not even guarantee, that the strategy will work after those resets? I don't see any point in having to restrict it even further.
For the record: Those rules did not exist until five months ago and nobody, besides Gippy, were aware of those rulechanges at that time, until legrandgrand asked in this thread.
I would not mind, if those changes to the rules were discussed with anyone here five months ago. This was not the case here.
If you want to do a run, just do it :)
Hey Sizzyl,
I'm not sure, what the difference would be between console, emulator, or this, so I would like to see a run of it.
Right now, I would allow it unless it has some benefits over the other two, such as faster loading times, RNG being set, etc.
I could do that, do you already finished runs?
Good list! Kinda happy to be a part of the second stream again (for the third time in a row :^] )
Just wondering if it was intentional to not include Order of Ecclesia in the Castlevania block.
Some updates regarding my run and schedule:
I do a couple of runs here and there and I managed to cut off 30s off my PB, which is kinda surprising, considering I don't have the time to play the game that much. Hopefully you won't mind that much.
Schedule: I'm going to be at ESA from 23rd to 27th due to "commitment towards my wife" a.k.a. honeymoon. :P
Cool.
Why Albus over Shanoa?
Around the same time, I have a run in a Castlevania Marathon. It would be really nice, if you could put it on Saturday.
Can't say much sadly as I didn't have that much time to watch mostly due to work.
At first, I was really surprised with the layout if you compare it to last year / DH Summer. I don't know why you changed it, but for me, it was a downstep as I really liked the previous ones (only exception is 4-player layout, that one looked pretty good).
Then, the issues at the beginning. It can happen, most people complained about it already. Nothing else too add here.
Interviews were kinda......meh. It can be dropped.
Intermission - Oh boy, That was probably the thing that annoyed me the most. It was just the text, sponsors, and... nothing. Having dead air is the worst thing you can do to maintain people. I really liked the way it was done at SGDQ this year.
Other than that, the runs were pretty entertaining.
I won't be able to come to ESA. You can cut my two games that are still in. :)
Pretty good list, sucks that Advance Wars got slaughtered, but I can understand it.
Well anyways, I'm going to practice super hard for finals now :)
Mafia is a good game.
If you think, that parity cop is a powerful role, it is...
Sadly this means, you are dead on the first night :^)
"Small" Update on my runs:
ActRaiser: I got a new PB (28:56) that still can be improved my a lot as it has a lot of unfortunate deaths that can be avoided.
The thing is, a better runner has submitted this game for SGDQ and it is already in the schedule. If you consider the SGDQ games list and think, that my run is not good enough, I'm okay with cutting this game from ESA (unless you want to do ActRaiser 1+2 in the same marathon).
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
I've improved my PB quite a bit. It's currently at 25:31 and at this point, it's hard to improve, because all that matters now is the Devil's Sould drop and getting a good Menace fight. The only thing in this run, that is quite difficult is pretty much the final boss, that can be a real pain. For the RNG part, I have a save file available, that can skip the soul farming and it's used when I don't get the Devil's Soul drop after a minute.
This game got also in the SGDQ schedule, but it's a different category and the route is different after the first five minutes. As I have the best time in this category without GBA Slot, I'm confident it will be a good showing.
Castlevania: Order of Ecclessia
I don't feel motivated to do runs of it anymore. You can cut this game (Sorry Yva :(((((( ).
Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising
Now this will be very interesting. My current PB stands at 1:42:44, which can be improved by a LOT. The problem however remains, that I have to rely on RNG on most of the missions.
The good: There is a way to manipulate the AI to do certain things. A lot of testing has been done on every mission and it usually works most of the time.
The bad: two particular missions at the end of the game can screw me over one way or another. Because there is only one save file for this game, I can't make a safety save for this.
the (opposite of) ugly: All the saves that I have to do have been figured out. Saving on certain missions is essential so I can manipulate the AI a bit. Also it's funny to see how stupid the AI can be in some of the missions :)
I posted it in the wrong topic, so I will mention it again:
I'm available from 27th onwards. There is a possibility, that I could come earlier, but don't count on it.
@Deln: I will add you as soon as I'm back home. I had no time in the last couple of days. I already added your run to the leaderboards in advance.
I will keep it as short as possible:
Venue: The venue was a really good choice. it is in a central position and and everything you need is very close (5 minute walk, except for mass housing). In terms of rooms, it was alright with the exception being the mafia room, which was empty most of the time. The only problem I had was with the kitchen / orange room. After a couple of days, the fridge was not usable anymore and it started smelling really bad.
Mass housing: I did not mind the distance between the venue and mass housing. I could buy my stuff at Netto before arriving at the venue. However right at the beginning, Nobody had an idea, where it was so me and a couple of other people wasted time, trying to find it. Part of it was the really bad mapping of the facilities. not your fault tho :P
Streaming area / Tech stuff: As a 3/DS runner, I was really happy that I could decide, what layout I would like to use as it was really important for me, that everything was available. The set-up was very fast, mostly because I prepared everything a day before. The streaming area was alight for me.
However, during my run, I could not hear any commentators or donation readings, without removing the headset which felt really awkward for me after a couple of minutes.
Check-In: I was worried at first, that my payment did not go through, eventhough the payment list confirmed that I paid for both entry fee and mass housing. I felt naked without the wristbands at first, luckily everything was fine after contacting Edenal at the event so everything got solved after a day.
okay it was longer than I expectedit to be. But yeah, the event overall was better than last year.
Okay, I'm cool with this.
Dark Witch on second stream? I'm totally fine with that! However: What is the reason being it on the same day as Advance Wars?
