Hey there! Actually, I don't have an auto split for this game. It's been really difficult for me to make one, I suspect because I'm running the game in emulator.

That's also a fair point. I love it since it makes the game so accessible, but for no-speed, maybe a specific speed in MMR:DE should be enforced to best match the original game's speed.

Alright, felt like I should write a conclusion to all of this. I completely agree with everyone here, so I've edited all categories. Runs that modify speed and runs that do not are separated in the leaderboards. Hopefully this makes the game more accessible and encouraging to run!

The term MMR:DE refers to a specific Lode Runner project, currently in active development. It's an unofficial built-from-scratch Mad Monks' Revenge (or Lode Runner On-Line) project by QuarkRobot, found here: https://mmr.quarkrobot.com/. The link is also in the Resources tab.

MMR:DE is probably the easiest way to play the game without downloading emulators or abandonware. MMR itself contains the single player levels of TLR, plus additional levels exclusive to MMR, but does not contain the TLR exclusive Co-op levels.

MMR:DE is only allowed for Single Player runs of Lode Runner: The Legend Returns for the above reason. Be sure to mark "DE" for the "MMR:DE?" option when submitting a run.

Yikes, It's been a while since I've checked the forums. Sadly, I never got notifications or anything for it. I'm absolutely okay with adding a category for default speed, especially if PS1 only has one speed, and for runners who want the default speed. If any runs show up with default speed, I'll add a category immediately. Sorry for the late respose, I hope that didn't cause any disinterest in speedrunning.

I've actually submitted runs for Individual Levels where I've changed the game speed during the run, and I enjoy it so much more. :)

Thanks for bringing this up. I reconsidered the rule, and I realized that game speed manipulation is a built-in feature, so why restrict it? I've allowed faster speeds for all the categories for the moment, but there aren't any "normal-speed %" categories yet.

I have realized that, outside of DOSBox, emulating MS-DOS is extremely fickle, and even on DOSBox, game speed is entirely reliant on how fast the machine performs. This gives advantage to better performing emulators. Something needs to happen to regulate that, but for now, it seems DOSBox is the best emulator for running the game, and it can get up to some crazy high speed.

Thanks for the post. All these things will be considered even more, but probably only if more people jump on the speed running bandwagon.

@EmitPoe I saw your run on youtube, looks good. @jeffsledge doesn't seem to be active, so I'd say to request a new game separate from the series and include your run (if you haven't already), and later have global mods merge Spelunker Party into the Spelunker Series. That way you can get the game on the site as quickly as possible.

It's up to the series moderator to add the game to the series if the game doesn't exist on the site. If the game does exist already but is not attached to the series, that's a job for global mods.

I'd actually like to add to the question. @jeffsledge, are you aware of the Spelunker Party (Switch / PC) game? What needs to be provided in order for the game to be added to the series list? I'm extremely interested in running the game, but there's no community, rules, or any structure to what running the game would mean.

Floating Item Usage: When exiting a ladder to the side, a player can use the gas gun (other items?) on the frame the player should fall. For as long as the player continues using the gas gun, the player will float indefinitely in the air.

Instant Block: When falling rocks from the pickaxe collide with a falling monk or falling player, the player or monk become suspended in the air forever and become obstructing blocks. Players and monks can stand on and cannot move through a frozen monk or player.

Co-op Infinite Lives: Restarting the level decreases the life count of both players. If one player has zero lives and the level is restarted, the player revives at -1 lives. So long as the player does not complete a level and gain lives back to 0, the player will continue to spawn into a level and play normally.
