(This guide stolen from the [Hollow Knight Guides](https://www.speedrun.com/hollowknight/guide/cg9vl))

If you are new to speedrunning Super Mario 64 FPS, please be sure to read through this guide thoroughly to ensure your setup is correct. If you're not sure what to do, follow the steps below.

## Setting up splits
1. Download and extract LiveSplit. [Download link](https://livesplit.org/downloads/).

2. Open LiveSplit. You should see a timer with "0.00". Right click on it and select Edit Splits.

3. In the Splits Editor, fill out your Game Name (*Super Mario 64 FPS*) and Run Category (i.e. *70 Star*). Create splits by using the Insert buttons on the left. Viewing runs from other players may be helpful in deciding which splits to create.

4. After typing in *Super Mario 64 FPS* as the Game Name, the auto splitter should automatically be detected. Activate it and click on Settings. In this window, we set up triggers for each split. Every time we reach one of the triggers that we set, LiveSplit will automatically move on to the next split for us. Therefore, for each split you added earlier, you need to add the corresponding trigger. For each split you added earlier find the triggers within the drop down boxes. If your category ends with killing Bowser (BiTS), you do not need to worry about checking this trigger (it should be check by default). When finished, hit OK to exit the Autosplitter and then OK to exit the Splits Editor. [Example](https://imgur.com/gjzmVoF).

## Setting up layout
I'd like to refer you to watching [SmallAnts video about LiveSplit](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xq2MCodtH34). There are however some small steps to make sure you have the recommended setup.

5. Right click on LiveSplit and under Compare Against, select *Real Time*.

    - Most people will also select *Personal Best* as comparison.

6. **Important**, make sure there is no *Scriptable Auto Splitter* component added to your layout settings.

## Miscellaneous

7. Right click on LiveSplit and create save files for both your Splits and Layout.

9. Right click on Livesplit and select Settings. Take note of the hotkeys and make changes if desired. Ensure that the Global Hotkeys option is checked, as this will allow you to use the hotkeys while your Super Mario 64 FPS window is in focus.

10. It's time to test it out. With your LiveSplit open, start Super Mario 64 FPS and select an empty file. If your timer automatically begins, you're good. Have fun on your run!

That's it. If everything worked out, you may next decide to liven up your LiveSplit by making changes to the Layout Settings in the Layout Editor.

## FAQ

Q. Why has my timer not started when I select new save file or is lagging?
A. It may help to open LiveSplit after starting Super Mario 64 FPS. Try restarting LiveSplit. If that doesn't work, try restarting Super Mario 64 FPS and then LiveSplit. If that doesn't work, try restarting your computer.

Q. Why don't any of my hotkeys work?
A. Make sure you have Global Hotkeys enabled under settings.

Q. Why does my autosplitter not automatically split on certain splits, or why does my autosplitter split randomly?
A. Double check your Auto Splitter settings and that you are on the correct version of the game (*v2.0*), as older versions do not work. Also make sure you've read step **6.** If you cannot solve any of these errors with the autosplitter, contact @Zatura24 in the discord. Also, ensure that you know what your "Undo Split" hotkey is in the settings in case it is needed.

If you have any other problems, try running LiveSplit as an administrator.

1.0 / 2.0 Version Differences

- Bowser Red Coin stars still don't work
- BOB cannon floor is no longer below the kill plane
- TTC now works
- TTC reds count as the 100 coin star (so there are only 6 obtainable stars in TTC)
- CCM red coin star now works
- OOB still possible
- Rainbow ride cruiser star not a pain in the ass to obtain now (platform can be jumped on easier)
- Snowman's land head star obtainable now
- There's a jetpack in TTM now for lonely mushroom star
- Whomp King not fixed
- P+V cheat still works
- Red coin star in hazy maze cave works properly now (it spawns in bounds)
- Wet dry world secret star also works properly (it spawns in bounds)
- 100 coin stars no longer require you to get exactly 100 coins (e.g. you can now get 98 and get a blue coin and it will still spawn)
- Volcano stars in LLL now give the correct star completion when picked up
- Removed floor panel in upper right BBH room
- RR and SL stars now save properly

70 Star Guide (1.0)

**THIS ROUTE IS OUTDATED WITH THE RELEASE OF 2.0. (link)**

Thought I'd write out the route from gamestabled's run to make it easier to follow, and to help others learn 70 Star since it could be a fun category to compete in. I also have absolutely nothing better to do with my life. I wrote this with the intention of it following some sort of checklist format, and it may be beneficial in some places to watch gamestabled's run alongside the guide.  Enjoy!

Note: We'll be using a technique called the Cutscene Cancel (CC) quite a bit during this run. This is performed by hitting the menu key twice to quickly enter and exit the menu during a star spawn cutscene, which allows you to move around during its duration. Your camera will be a little screwed up until the cutscene is done, but with some practice you'll get the hang of it.

Note 2: The Cooler Note - This run uses the All Guns cheat code which is activated by hitting P and V on the keyboard at the same time, you'll know it's activated if Mario takes a lil bit of damage after you press it. 

Note 3: The Less Cool Note - I highly recommend you bind your scroll wheel to left-click using Lioncache's guide, it'll make the bowser fight much, much easier.

File Select, then instant Exit to Castle and immediately run to and enter Whomp's Fortress. You may want to enable the All Guns cheat on your way to get it out of the way.

Whomp's Fortress - 5 OR 6 Stars
(For all stars, select any star that isn't Gun Sling the Whomp King as it will be skipped in this run)
(Note from gamestabled: Gun Sling the Whomp King is fast enough to be included in the route instead of a slower star, but the star is frequently non-functional and more challenging than many others. For these reasons, it is not included in my route right now, but an optimal 70 star route would include it.)

MOD EDIT 2/28/21 - The current fastest route for 70 star collects Gun Sling the Whomp King as the first star, as it is possible to collect despite sometimes taking numerous tries/resets before it will work. If you choose to do this star, you can skip a slower star such as JRB red coins (in which case you would open the JRB jetpack during Into The Abyss instead).

- Collect the To the Top of the Fortress Star (hint: it's at the top of the fortress)
- Collect the Blast Away the Wall star (the star is clipping through the wall slightly on the slanted side of the tower, so simply jump at it from the top of the slanted side)
 - Collect the Shoot Into the Wild Blue star (you're able to collect this star by falling off the ledge above it and holding back, refer to gamestabled's run if unclear)
 - Collect the Red Coin star (get em all, make sure to end with the one nearest to the star spawn space, then CC to collect the star - be careful not to jump off the edge)
 - Collect the Island Parkour star (it's in the cage at the end of the floating islands, nothing special needed)

Exit to Castle once back in the Whomp's Fortress room, and immediately run to Cool, Cool Mountain

Cool, Cool Mountain - 5 Stars
(Slip Slidin Away is the only star that must be selected at the star select screen for it to appear, and Hole In the Wall will not spawn if this star is selected, but will spawn in every other star. The Snowman's Secrets also only appears in later missions.)
 
 - Collect the Hole In the Wall star (enter the slide, jump off the start platform behind the big penguin and immediately rotate 180 degrees to the right to jump over the blue wall, where you can fall down to the ending hut and directly onto the star)
 - Collect the Lil' Penguin Lost star (too lazy to describe the route for this one, just watch gamestabled's run and start blastin', then CC at the end once delivered)
 - Collect the Slip Slidin' Away star (same method as Hole In the Wall, just make sure to select this specific star)
 - Collect the The Snowman's Secrets star (once again I'm too lazy to describe the route, just make sure to activate the cheat code so that you can shoot the far secrets with the rocket launcher, and then CC to collect the star)
 - Collect the Wall Kicks Weren't Implemented star (you're able to jump straight off to the area where the star is, and you can jump on a piece of geometry to the left of the area in order to jump onto the top level where the star is, refer to gamestabled's run if unclear)

Exit to Castle once and make your way to Jolly Roger Bay

Jolly Roger Bay - 6 Stars
(Jetpack to the Pillars and Minecavern do not need to be picked specifically to be collected, but the rest do)
(Note from gamestabled: the JRB route in my 40:05 run is one of the biggest mistakes in that run. The descriptions below now say what should have been done)

 - Collect the Red Coins star on at least the 3rd mission and unlock the jetpack from the Bob-Omb Buddy (this was the mistake in gamestabled's run)
 - Collect the Can Eel Come Out to Play star (vanilla route, sit under him til he gets a lil antsy and swims out and collect the star as it follows him out)
 - Collect the Jetpack to the Pillars star (Just use the jetpack that you unlocked during the Red Coins)
 - Collect the Plunder in the Sunken Ship star (vanilla route, wait til he swims out and get plunderin')
 - Collect the Minecavern star (Use the jetpack to fly over the wall near the start and enter the minecavern from out of bounds, saving quite a bit of time over travelling there normally)
 - Collect the Into the Abyss star (nothing special, it's at the bottom)

Once you are back in the castle, run to the corner to perform the Downstairs Skip. Enter the basement and run to the Hazy Maze Cave entrance.

Hazy Maze Cave - 5 stars

 - We'll be using the same method to collect both the Watch for Rolling Rocks & A-Maze-ing Emergency Exit stars. (Go to the red coin room, and immediately run to the right to grab the jetpack, then fly back to the door you came from and then fly over the wall towards those stars. You'll need to make sure that you land on the wall seam since you won't be able to fly the full distance, and then grab the second jetpack and fly to both stars. Make sure not to fly into the lamp like a DUMMY.)
 - The two sea cavern stars will be collected in a similar fashion. (Grab the same jetpack, but this time just fly over the wall in the corner until you are over the sea covern, then simply fall down and complete both stars.
 - Collect the Navigating the Toxic Maze star (vanilla route)

Once you are back in the castle, make your way to Lethal Lava Land

Lethal Lava Land - 6 Stars

 - Collect the Bullies Barrage the Star star (nothing special, just don't die running across the lava)
 - Collect the Bullies Didn't Learn Their Lesson star (read above)
 - Collect the Red-Hot Log Rolling star (just jump around the gate on the right side)
 - Collect the Red Coins star (save one coin on the puzzle for last so you can CC and collect the star)
 - Collect both volcano stars (vanilla routes)

Once you are back in the castle, run to Shifting Sand Land

Shifting Sand Land - 5 stars

 - Collect the Shining Atop the Pyramid star (just jump over the mountain at the beginning and jump up the pyramid)
- Collect the 1v1 with Klepto star (shoot him with the sniper rifle and the star will spawn on the left side of the map)
 - Collect the Jetpack Atop the Four Pillars star (use the jetpack to cover the two left pillars, then recollect it and cover the two right pillars, then enter the pyramid and collect the star on the right
 - Collect the Secret Pyramid Puzzle star (enter the pyramid, then follow the route in gamestabled's run, you'll need to use the rocket launcher for the most efficient path, and make sure to finish on top of where the star spawns for the fastest time)
 - Collect the Inside the Ancient Pyramid star (enter the pyramid and get on top of the red brick box, fall off the edge and into the room and collect the star)

Once you're back in the castle, make your way through the 30 star door and enter Dire Dire Docks

Dire Dire Docks - 5 star

 - Collect the Blast Davy Jone's Locker star (swim through the tunnel and blow up the side of the cage with the rocket launcher)
 - Collect Sushi's Star (grab it off his tail)
 - Collect the The Manta Ray's Reward star (grab it off its tail)
 - Collect the Nautical Secrets star (fall down slowly as you shoot each of the secret spots with the rocket launcher, then collect the star. Ideally you want to finish on top of it, but if not just CC or wait it out)
 - Collect the Board Bowser's Sub star (nothing special)

Once you're back in the castle, hit Exit to Castle and then run straight to Big Boo's Haunt

Big Boo's Haunt - 6 Stars
(Poltergust 3000 must be used to kill ghosts)

 - Collect the Go On a Ghost Hunt star (vanilla route)
 - Collect the Ride King Boo's Merry Go Round star (normal route, CC to collect the star)
 - Collect the Big Boo on the Summit star (normal route, make sure to start the fight in the star spawn space, shoot him a bunch, and then CC to collect the star) 
 - Collect the Red Coins star (vanilla route, watch gamestabled's run)
 - Collect the Blast the Bookshelf star (make your way to the top left of the house, shoot the big bookshelf with the rocket launcher and jump the gap to collect the star)
 - Collect the Eye to Eye in the Secret Room star (vanilla route, shoot it 3 times with the rocket launcher, and CC to collect the star)

Once you are back in the castle, immediately Exit to Castle and make your way to Bob-Omb Battlefield

Bob-Omb Battlefield - 5 Stars

 - Collect the Island in the Sky star (run to the left of the level and talk to the Bob-Omb near the cannon, where you'll grab the jetpack and fly to the island to collect the star)
 - Collect the The Pirahnazooka Problem star (same method as above, but fly to the top of the mountain, talk to King Bob-Omb and quickly throw all 3 mushroom mines at him to defeat him, then CC to collect the star. Note: make sure you do not use these mushroom mines anywhere else, as if you do not have all 3 from the cheat code on hand, you'll need to buy more from the Monty Mole. Or just press P+V again to get more mines lol)
 - Complete the Koopa the Quickscoper star (talk to the koopa and he'll race you, but run out of breath behind the mountain, talk to him again there and he'll drop the star, CC to collect)
 - Complete the Sought-After Sky Secrets star (run over to the star's spawn area and shoot all 5 secret spots with your rocket launcher as fast as possible, CC to collect)
 - Collect the Blast Away the Chain Chomp's Bars star (shoot the bars down with the rocket launcher to collect)

Once you are back in the castle, Exit to Castle and make your way to the JRB room, where you'll perform the upstairs skip. Once the skip is complete, jump into Wet Dry World

Wet Dry World - 5 Stars

 - Collect the The Odder Secret star (immediately run over to the Heave-Ho (the flipper enemy) and lure it to perform the clip into the Town, where you'll immediately try to land on the top platform and head to the warp space. Once you warp, it'll put you behind the gate, where you collect the star at the top)
 - Collect the Top O' the Town star (MAKE SURE to select the Secrets in the Shallows and Sky star or else the Bob-Omb will not spawn, make your way to the top of the main area, and make sure to talk to the Bob-Omb before collecting as it'll open the jetpack for later)
 - Collect the Switch Up on the Mega Mushroom star (nothing special, make your way up to the "?" button, where you'll ground pound it, drop down, and then jump on the mega mushroom to collect the star)
 - Collect the The Odd Secret star (run over to the warp space behind the sign, then drop down to collect the star)
 - Collect the Secrets in the Shallows and Sky star (shoot all secret spaces with your rocket launcher, make sure to warp before finishing all 5 so that you can collect the jetpack, then fly over to collect the star)
 
Once back in the castle, make your way to Tiny-Huge Island

Tiny-Huge Island - 5 Stars
(This'll be a little confusing to type out so bear with me)

 - Collect the Pow Pow Piranha Plants star (Start tiny, go to huge pipe, run behind the pirahnas)
 - Collect the Tip Top of the Huge Island star (Start tiny, go to the top big pipe, go to the top of the island and collect the star)
 - Collect the Five Itty Bitty Secrets star (Start tiny, jump to the top of the island and shoot all secrets with your rocket launcher, jump across to collect)
 - Collect the Drop In the Mountain star (Start tiny, go to the top big pipe, jump up to the top of the level and fall in the hole, collect the star)
 - Collect the Red Coins star (Start tiny, go to the top big pipe, make your way around the side of the mountain to the other side and go through the hole, refer to gamestabled's run for the coin route)

Once in the castle, make your way to Tall, Tall Mountain

Tall, Tall Mountain - 4 Stars

 - Collect the Manhandle the Monkey star (Perform Monkey Skip, collect monkey star)
 (for monkey skip, aim here from your spawning position after loading into the level and fire the rocket launcher https://imgur.com/A02oh0K )
 - Collect the Scale the Mountain star (Jump up the face of the mountain to the top of the level and collect the star)
 - Collect the Breathtaking View From the Bridge star (About the same route as the top of the mountain, but take a slight detour to the star's location and fall off to collect it)
 - Collect The Slide's Star (climb the mountain and jump into the slide loading zone near the top. take the slide down until the first tunnel, then immediately jump off to the right and land on the star at the bottom)

Once in the castle, make your way to Snowman's Land

Snowman's Land - 5 Stars

 - Collect the Blast the Cage Away star (Shoot the cage with the rocket launcher, collect the star)
 - Collect the Chill with the Bullies star (nothing special, just grab the thing)
 - Collect the Behind the Freezing Pond star (nothing special, just jump off the flower thing to clear the wall and over the mountain)
 - Collect the Red Coins star (vanilla route)
 - Collect the Into the Igloo star (make your way to the hut, immediately shoot the gate below you with the rocket launcher and collect the star)


Once back in the castle, go up the stairs and through the 50 Star door, then make your way to Rainbow Ride.

Rainbow Ride - 3 Stars

 - Collect the Swingin' In the Breeze star (you can skip a majority of the level with the mega mushroom and go straight, pretty easy route)
 - Collect the Tricky Triangles star (same idea as the above star, but this time take the mega mushroom to the left, and ground pound the "?" to spawn the platforms and collect the star)
 - Collect the The Big House in the Sky star (take the mega mushroom to the right, make your way through the vertical maze thing to the jetpack, then play onto the rainbow near you. Then make the jump between the two rainbows to make it into the house, take the mega mushroom to the top and collect the star)

Once in the castle, you can make your way through the 70 Star door and into Bowser in the Sky

Bowser in the Sky

Run to the jetpack and fly back a little so you reach the top of the box, then go to the checkered platforms and once at the top, jump onto the strip with the Chuck-Ya. Continue down that path for a bit, and once you hit the turn, jump onto the flamethrower rock and cut the long loop section, run to the other side of that strip and take the jetpack up as far as you can near the checkered platforms, then navigate to the pipe and into the Bowser fight.

For the fight, it is very heavily advised that you bind your scroll wheel to left-click, as spamming the M16 is the best DPS in the game by far, and otherwise you will lose quite a bit of time by just clicking. Make sure to stay away from Bowser and mow him down, and once he gets close to you, simply run to the other side of the stage. Repeat this once or twice until you kill him, and collect the star, where the timer stops.

Buffering: A lot of inputs can be buffered, as in you can make inputs before the action usually begins.

Pressing space while airborne makes you jump the next time you land.

Sprinting / Course (re-)entry: You are pretty much going to be sprinting/holding the shift key  the entire time. However, knowing when to sprint upon entering a zone is important, as you can lose time by not entering the zone already running.

When entering a course typically you start holding shift after you select the star, as long as whichever direction (WASD) you want to go. This ensures you enter the course sprinting, and you won’t lose time.

The same goes for exiting a course and going back to the castle, but you start buffering after the fade-to-black animation ends. Be sure to memorize the re-entry direction for every course so you’ll know what to buffer.

Cutscene Cancel (CC): When the star animation loads, pressing tab twice allows Mario to move around again. However, the camera will be focused on the star when you’re airborne, so for some stars, you’ll have to be spatially aware. Otherwise you can move around on the ground to regain normal vision.

All guns cheat code: Pressing P and V on the same frame unlocks all the guns. You’ll know it worked when you see tomato sauce around your screen.

Autoclicker: An autoclicker will help tremendously with this speedrun. The one used by many people can be found here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/orphamielautoclicker/ (yes, it’s allowed).

Framerate: This game is best played at 60 frames per second. If you have a monitor of a higher frequency, I highly recommend you cap the framerate of the game to 60, otherwise stars that require you collect secrets will be much harder.

Movement: Good movement is probably the most important part of the game. How you move isn’t really an issue, but generally you always want to be moving. Standing still bites into time.

ROUTE:

Select your file, then hit tab upon loading in (it can be buffered too). Exit to the castle and head to Whomp’s Fortress. You can activate PV during this time.


Whomp’s Fortress - 6 stars
- Gun Sling The Whomp King (star 1 must be selected):
Head to the top of the level, talk to King Whomp by running towards him, ground pound him 3 times, CC to collect the star. There’s an infamous glitch in which his text softlocks the game. To avoid this, try delaying your final ground pound, and try to let go of the CTRL key fast (thank Zatura24).

- Shoot Into the Wild Blue:
Get onto the grey slope, run across the water (good time to activate PV if you haven’t), jump onto the slanted brown wall, jump onto the platform with the coin ring, hold forward until you fall off the platform then immediately hold back.

- Blast Away the Wall:
There are two ways to do this.

- To the Top of the Fortress:
Climb to the top of the fortress. Note that it’s faster to jump onto the bullet bill box, and that you don’t need to land on the orange rim to collect the star.

- Red Coins:
Collect the 8 red coins. Refer to the WR for the order. Make sure to CC to collect the star.

- Island Parkour:
Make your way to the bottom of the tower, shoot the plank with any gun, and parkour to collect the star in the cage.


Exit to the castle and head over to Cool, Cool Mountain.


Cool, Cool Mountain - 5 stars
- The Snowman’s Secrets (star 3 or higher must be selected):
Use the rocket launcher to collect the secrets, refer to the WR for the order. The fourth secret is pretty annoying. Keep in mind that the rocket launcher shoots slightly right of your crosshair.

- Wall Kicks Weren’t Implemented:
Immediately run forward and jump off the map. Try to land or jump onto the middle of the slope below you, then turn and jump onto the star’s platform.

- Slip Slidin’ Away (star 1 must be selected):
Jump into the hut, enter the slide on its right side, then jump and turn a little less than 180 degrees. You should be out of bounds and fall back in bounds towards the star.

- Hole In the Wall:
Same thing as before, but the star will be on a higher platform.

- Lil’ Penguin Lost:
Make your way up to the penguin, and use your pistol to shoot him back to their mother. CC to collect the star.


Exit the castle and head to Jolly Roger Bay.


Jolly Roger Bay - 5 Stars
- Into the Abyss (star 6 must be selected):
Head to the pink bob omb and talk to him to open the cannon, then descend into the deep area (hold control) and collect the star.

- Minecavern:

- Jetpack to the Pillars:
Jump into the cannon and fly to the star.

- Plunder in the Sunken Ship (star 1 must be selected):
Swim over to the deep area, and enter the ship. You can do this while the eel is still in the hole, just enter from the right side.

- Can Eel Come Out to Play:
Swim over to the eel, it should start moving out. You can go right up to the wall and hold A to collect the star.


Once you’re back in the castle, run to the corner on the left side (the one toad is on) and perform the basement skip. Once you’re in the basement, go to Hazy Maze Cave via the door to your left. When you enter the Hazy Maze Cave room, jump while you’re still in the doorway, this saves a bit of time since you don’t have to fall all the way down.


Hazy Maze Cave - 3 stars.
- Swimming Beast in the Cavern:
Go to the area on the left (the one with the rolling rocks), upon entering, head right to the elevator room. Step on the elevator (it should start going down) and immediately run off and hug the wall the elevator is connected to. You should fall through, and you can fall onto the star.

- Behind the Gates:
Same as the previous star, but you go into the room behind the gates. I recommend having the M16 equipped, as you can easily kill all the scuttlebugs in there.

- A-mazing Emergency Exit:
Head to the red coin room (to the right of spawn) and collect the jetpack. Head back and enter the door where you came from, and fly over the wall towards the star. You need to land on the thin wall, jump onto the ? block, and jump to the star. Make sure you’re spamming the spacebar to cling onto the railings.


Exit the room and run to Lethal Lava Land (Do not press tab and exit to castle).


Lethal Lava Land - 6 stars
- There are two stars in the volcano located in the middle of the map. Upon entering, you can take a shortcut by turning right, running across the lava, and jumping onto the platform. To avoid the bully, you can airstrafe around him.

- There are two stars with bullies surrounding them on the far side of the course. For the square platform, you want to approach from the left and land on the top left corner. For the grey platform, you want to approach from the left, land on the left, and then immediately jump towards the star.

 - Red Coins:
Collect the red coins on the bowser puzzle except for one, then head to the other side of the map (straight ahead of the puzzle) and collect the 7th red coin. Run back, collect the last red coin and CC to collect the star.

- Red-Hot Log:
Enter the course, run forwards, and jump into the star behind the grey bars. You can clip right through the bars.


Run to Shifting Sand Land (to the right) and equip the AWP (sniper rifle).


Shifting Sand Land - 5 stars
- 1v1 with Klepto:
Scope in using right click and shoot Klepto. I usually do this on the hill, but you can do it where the star spawns (between the left side pillars in the middle of the coin line). CC to collect the star.

- Shining Atop the Pyramid:
Jump over the hill, get onto the pyramid and collect the star.

- Inside the Ancient Pyramid:
Climb over the hill, enter the pyramid from the bottom. Get onto the red box by jumping from the area in the back (make sure to do the jump from the raised rim of the platform), then fall off the red box and enter the hole you saw as you entered the pyramid.

- Secret Pyramid Puzzle:
Enter the pyramid as before, and use the rocket launcher to collect the secrets (refer to the WR).

- Jetpack Atop the Four Pillars:
Get the jetpack on the pyramid and fly above the two side-by-size red pillars. Fly and hover above the jetpack so you can fly again, and fly to the other two pillars. Fly towards the top of the pyramid (the top should come off) and enter the hole. Upon entering, it helps to hold W (no shift) for a split second before jumping (with shift) to the star’s platform. It’s easier to collect the star if you land on its left side.


Run to the 30 star door and enter Dire Dire Docks.


Dire Dire Docks - 5 stars
- There are two stars carried by the Manta Ray and the Shark, hold down CTRL to descend in the water fast.

- Nautical Secrets:
Use the rocket launcher to collect the secrets. Make sure you collect the last secret such that your crosshair when looking straight down lines up with the top half of the shell:

and your depth is in between the two tallest coins (in the vertical line near the shell).

- Blast Davy Jones's Locker:
Make your way through the tunnel. Upon entering the sub room, destroy the cage on the left with the rocket launcher and collect the star.

- Board Bowser’s sub:
Go through the tunnel as you did before and collect the star on the sub.


Exit the castle and run straight towards Big Boo’s Haunt.


Big Boo’s Haunt - 5 stars
- Blast the Bookshelf:
Enter the mansion, ground pound the yellow switch, get to the top level. Go to the furthest left door and shoot the bookshelf with the rocket launcher.

- Eye to Eye in the Secret Room:
Equip the M16 for this. Enter the mansion, ground pound the yellow switch, get to the top level, open the furthest right door (not the one you have to jump across to access), jump on the yellow switch, enter the room, head straight and turn right at the opening (past the P switch). Aim at the eye and activate your autoclicker. CC to collect the star.

- Go On a Ghost Hunt:
Use the Poltergust 3000 to kill all the ghosts on the bottom floor (in every room except the furthest left), although I actually recommend entering through the furthest left room to prevent this from happening: https://youtu.be/N20Q2mK9sOQ?t=955

- Big Boo on the Summit:
Head to the same room where you got the Eye to Eye star, but this time enter the double doors on the left. Place yourself at the star spawn location and kill the big boo. CC to collect the star.

- Ride King Boo’s Merry Go Round:
Enter the house behind spawn, make your way to the merry go round room and kill all the boos. CC to collect the star.


Exit to castle twice and head to Bob Omb Battlefield.


Bob Omb Battlefield - 4 stars
- Sought-After Sky Secrets: (star 3 must be selected)
Climb into the hill behind spawn (the one that connects to the higher-elevated portion of the course), and make your way to the pink Bob-omb that unlocks the cannons. On your way, try to shoot as many secrets as you can. Talk to the pink Bob-omb, shoot the rest of the secrets, and collect the star.

- Island in the Sky:
Jump into the cannon, fly to the island and collect the star.

- The Pirahnazooka Problem:
Jump into the cannon at spawn, fly to the island, jump into the cannon on the island, fly to King Bob Omb. Click on him with the mines (mushrooms) equipped. CC to collect the star.

- Blast Away the Chain Chomp’s Bars:
Head to the star near the Chain Chomp, use the rocket launcher to break the gates and collect the star.


Exit to the castle, head to the JRB room and perform the upstairs skip (use the guides from earlier). Jump over the M16 (you already have one) and head to Wet Dry World.


Wet Dry World - 5 Stars
- Secrets in the Shallow Sky (star 3 must be selected):
Use the rocket launcher to collect all the secrets while making your way to the top of the level. Talk to the pink Bob-omb, drop down to the beige pillar and jump to the star.

- Top O’ the Town:
Head to the leftmost pillar. Stand in the warp zone in front of the sign, jump into the cannon and collect the star.

- The Odd Secret:
Head to the leftmost pillar. Stand in the warp zone in front of the sign. Simply fall back and collect the star.

- The Odder Secret:
Run to the Heave-Ho and lure him into the corner between the wall and the brown platform. Clip into the town, get onto the blue sparkles. After warping, jump up twice and collect the star.

- Switch Up on the Mega Mushroom:
Make your way up to the yellow switch, ground pound it, fall off the building and head into the cage. Jump onto the box, then jump onto the Mega Mushroom to collect the star.


Head left to Tiny-Huge Island


Tiny-Huge Island - 5 stars
We will only be using the tiny painting.
- Pow Pow Piranha Plants:
Wait until you land, then jump to the pipe in front of you (next to the water). Run to the star, killing any plants in the way.

- 99 coins:
Enter the same pipe, and use the rocket launcher to kill the 5 plants, once they’re all dead, hop into the pipe and back to respawn the plants. The rocket launcher doubles the coin values, just make sure to aim at the bottom of their stems.

- Five Itty Bitty Secrets:
Refer to the WR for this star. To CC without dying, hold the S and Shift keys at the apex of your jump.

- Tip Top of the Huge Island / Drop in the Mountain:
Enter the pipe to the right of the one you used for the plant stars. Jump on the side of the pipe, jump onto the mountain and spam space to climb. Collect the star behind the mountain. For the other star, climb to the top of the mountain and jump into the hole. Make sure to airstrafe around the platform.


Exit the room and head to Tall, Tall Mountain.


Tall, Tall Mountain - 4 stars
- Manhandle the Monkey:
Don’t move upon entering the course. Equip the rocket launcher and aim in this general area (thank you New Guy): https://i.imgur.com/A02oh0K.png. CC to collect the star.

- Breathtaking View From the Bridge (select star 6):
Make your way to the mountaintop, but make sure you talk to the pink bob omb. The star is located in front of the mountain in a cubby hole.

- Lonely Mushroom:
Head to the area with the mushroom platforms (containing red coins), fall off the ledge that looks pointy, enter the cannon and fly to the star.

- Scale the Mountain (star 1 must be selected):
Climb to the top of the mountain.


Head to Snowman’s Land.


Snowman’s Land - 5 stars
- Blast the Cage Away:
Shoot the cage behind you and collect the star.

- Into the Igloo:
Make your way to the Igloo, and destroy the cage below you. It helps to jump before you shoot, otherwise the rocket might go through the cage.

- Snowman’s Big Head:
Climb up the rocks to the left of the snowman, jump onto his right (our left) shoulder, then jump onto the wood platform. From there, jump onto the box and collect the star.

- Behind the Freezing Pond
Jump on the middle spindrift (the flower enemy) to get onto the rocky area. From there, get to the other side of the rocks and collect the star.

- Chill with the Bullies:
Head to the bully platform (to the right of spawn), jump to an area where it’s relatively clear, then immediately jump to the star.


Exit the room, climb up the stairs, go through the 50 star door, and head into Tick Tock Clock.


Tick Tock Clock - 5 stars
These stars are really defined by how you collect them, so I won’t be naming them.
- Hold forward (and maybe look a little to the right)
- Fall onto the beige platform, and collect the star behind the pendulums
- Fall onto the green cog, use the rocket launcher to blast the cage and collect the star.
- Fall off to your right and land in the cubby (for safety, you can land on the green cog and jump to the cubby)
- Fall down to the 2nd floor (the one with the cage textures) and collect the red coins. CC to collect the star.


Head to Rainbow Ride on your left.


Rainbow Ride - 2 stars
- Tricky Triangles:
Jump to the platform with the Mega Mushroom, jump onto the Mega Mushroom and go towards the left star (you can land on the fire dispenser), ground pound the yellow switch, and parkour to the star.

- Swingin’ In the Breeze:
Get to and jump on the Mega Mushroom as you did before, but head over to the pendulum platform on the right and collect the star.


Head over to the 70 star door and enter Bowser in the Sky


Bowser in the Sky
Use the WR or the New Game+ runs for reference, but here’s some tips:
- Jump onto the first jetpack and don’t let go of the spacebar to reliably land onto the rotating platforms.
- To avoid chuckya, try running along the edge he’s not occupying. If it doesn’t seem like you can squeeze through, you can try luring him to the area behind and airstrafing around him.
- For the Bowser fight, activate your autoclicker and start playing ring around the rosie. Hold Shift and D, aim such that you’re centering on Bowser, and tap S when you feel like you’re getting too close.

Hope this guide helped. Although I believe this game is best learned visually, at least we have an updated guide.

Basement Skip Explanation + Visualization

I'll try my best to explain this in text format -

this came out much longer than i expected, but i really tried to give as thorough of an explanation as i possibly could + i tried my best to help you visualize it the way i do.

quick note: the basement skip took me roughly an hour to get for the first time, but the more you do it, the better you're able to visualize it yourself. i can do it >60% of the time now (except when it actually matters) so it's really just practice once you get the method down.

quicker note: the upstairs skip utilizes the exact same method, just mirrored on the other side of JRB

it's easier to break the trick down into 3 parts:

part 1: the first two jumps to set up your position - https://imgur.com/2fTgPQw refer to this image
 - if you watch the run, i jump up the invisible wall twice in order to set myself up for part 2 where i will check if i have clipped through correctly or not. in the image, it shows roughly the 2D plane that you'll be jumping on. there are two thick lines labeled 1 & 2 - think of them like rungs of a ladder that you need to climb, the first jump will land on 1 and the second will land on 2. your goal is to be against the front wall and reach roughly around the height of 2 using those two jumps. they do not need to be max height, but as long as you get a noticeable amount of height per jump, then you should be okay to move on to part 2.

troubleshooting with part 1:

 - you want to use the right edge of the front wall (the brick wall you are facing that is visible) as your guide, and you want to try and stay on that line, as if you go too far to the right, you will clip through and will have to try again. you also do not want to be too far back as you could clip through the back end of the wall as well. 

part 2: once you have successfully made it onto the 2nd rung of the ladder from the image above, and you are not stuck or too far to the right, then your next step will be to jump once to see if you have gotten the proper clip needed to jump onto the wall or not. the method i use is to align myself straight against the right edge of the brick wall, and jumping once. 

this jump can yield one of three options:

correct cue: you are able to do a full, max height jump when standing on the 2nd rung, which goes all the way up and then lands back on the 2nd rung; DO NOT MOVE in any direction after this jump has been completed, as you will need to jump straight onto the wall (part 3). your character may move slightly as if jumping into a curved surface, but this is exactly what you're looking for. proceed to part 3.

reposition cue: if your jump does not get max height and hits the ceiling prematurely, but still comes back down to land on the second rung, then this signifies that you are not far enough to the right to properly test for the clip. as long as you aren't stuck, you can do a very (VERY) light tap to the right, and jump again. if the same thing happens, then repeat until you get either the correct or the incorrect cue.

incorrect cue: this could take several forms and will always mean you must retry- 
a. your jump gets you stuck in the ceiling; i think this signifies that you were either too far right, or you were slightly in front of the front wall, not completely sure
b. you fall down to the ground/out of the map; this means that you ran off of the second rung in a direction before doing the test jump
c. anything else that gets you stuck/does not allow you to jump again; you screwed somethin up, no biggie just try again

part 3: this is where you bring home the bacon. once you have cleared the test jump and are able to do a full jump, you want to jump up and land on top of the front brick wall. this is a little bit of a tight jump since it's onto a thin edge, but trust your instincts. once you land this first jump, you will then want to jump onto the edge of the little brick hole in the wall to your right. these jumps are fairly straightforward since there isn't anything invisible to navigate around, it just comes down to platforming skills. 

this is it, the final jump. you will be jumping from the little brick edge, all the way down to the basement loading zone which is behind the doors. this is a fairly simple jump, as long as you JUMP FIRST, and then input W + SPRINT IMMEDIATELY AFTER. far too many times have i seen either myself or someone else just run off the little brick edge because they tried to be a big gamer - just play it safe. you MUST be sprinting to make this jump however, and by then, you're well on your way to meeting the big man.

How to clear your save files (v1.0/2.0)

With version 1.0 and 2.0, you currently can't erase save files. If you have all four save files used, you might be thinking, "UH OH! How do I do more runs then!?", never fear, your speedrunning days aren't over.

If on Windows, do the following:

1. Bring up the Run menu (press Windows Key + R)
2. Type in "AppData" and hit enter. The AppData folder should appear.
3. Go into LocalLow\MixMorris\Super Mario 64 FPS
4. Delete savedata.bin
5. Start the game up
6. Your save files are now erased
7. Proceed to bust out more phat runs

If on macOS or Linux:

1. I don't know. I don't use these OS-es for running Mario Gun.

**What's wrong with the 100 coin star for x level? Why didn't it spawn?**
-first, every 100 coin star actually requires only 99 coins. additionally, the logic that makes 99 coin stars spawn requires you to have collected exactly 99 coins. so if you collect 98 coins, and then collect a blue or red coin, you will be unable to obtain the 99 coin star because you passed 99 without hitting it exactly.

**Why did a star I collected not add to my total star count?**
-the Bob-omb Battlefield secrets and Lethal Lava Land 99 coins stars can be spawned, collected, and bring you back to the castle properly, but they do not properly increment your star count.

**Why do I lose stars when I exit/close the game?**
-Snowman's Land stars go away when you exit to main menu, and Rainbow Ride stars go away when you exit the entire game.

**What does NG+ mean / How do you warp to somewhere else in the castle by falling out of bounds?**
NewGame+ categories involve use of a glitch called Respawn Bug Abuse to reach areas of the castle early on a new file by storing the respawn point of the last level you entered on a different file beforehand. In its simplest form, this involves entering a level on a completed file, such as Bowser in the Sky or Lethal Lava Land, and then exiting to menu. Once you start a new file, you can simply exit to castle and then void out (by clipping out of bounds next to the JRB portait, for example) OR die by taking enough damage (spam P+V) to be taken to the entrance of the level you had exited from previously.

**Why do I randomly die when entering the first cannon/jetpack in Bob-omb Battlefield?**
-the kill floor of the level is above the bottom of the cannon, meaning that if you aren’t holding space to immediately fly, you’ll fall into the kill floor before touching the bottom of the cannon.

**Why do I get stuck talking to the whomp king after defeating him?**
-while not entirely understood, there are several issues with how the main update function handles textboxes and ground pounding as well as the whomp king himself, that combine to make this softlock seem random. there is no known way to consistently make this star work, but it will work eventually if you keep trying.

**Why doesn't a star spawn when I collect all the red coins in Bowser in the Dark World / Fire Sea / Sky?**
-these bowser level red coin stars are not programmed to spawn in the game and cannot be collected.

**Why can't I properly collect any stars in Tick Tock Clock?**
-all TTC stars are bugged in such a way that they will not send you back to the castle upon collection, forcing you to manually exit the stage and forfeit the star collection.

**Why can't I collect the Hazy Maze Cave red coins / Wet Dry World secrets star, it spawns out of bounds?**
-for these stars, it spawns the star at the last coordinates of a star you spawned such as a red coins star or a secrets star. to get the proper setup for WDW secrets, you need to do the BOB secrets star first, otherwise it will be impossible to reach. For HMC reds, you need to do the Lethal Lava Land red coin star first.

**How do you reach the Lonely Mushroom star in Tall, Tall Mountain?**
