New lag abuse rules (Any%)
Veröffentlicht 2 years ago von

In the interest of leveling the playing field on all PC hardware, we are removing the ban on external lag creation in Any% (unrestricted). For now, all other categories will remain the same as they were.

Runners on PC may now enable the "Emulated CPU Clock Override" option in Dolphin which, when set below 100%, caps the frame-rate even when the GPU isn't struggling. This allows the runner to clip through floors consistently regardless of hardware.

Why we made this change

Simply put, GPUs are getting too good.

Until earlier this year, all runners who tested the boss clip were able to perform it just as consistently as on a Wii console, which was our metric for deciding which hardware-dependent tricks were okay. However, this is no longer the case for runners who have more recent GPUs, to the point where lag abuse tricks are no longer consistent enough to rely on in full runs.

The only solution that would level the playing field going forward is to allow a method that is independent of hardware; capping frame-rate is one example of something that theoretically has the same outcome on all PCs, so it seems like a good option for now. Whether we stick with this or iterate to a new solution, all verified runs will stay.
