Hey - I had a few questions and comments about save file seeding. Having a save file with fewer things unlocked helps make it easier to get the build you want. You can go even further and grind out a save file to get the memories that you want, and then do runs by unlocking them at the robot (FR3ND 4EV3R). You then get to equip them immediately for a complete build at the start.
It's also fairly trivial to backup the save and restore it after a run to repeat the process.
I tried this and got this Any% run. The biggest timesave is honestly not having to menu. Ever.
Having a set start does feel like a different experience from an unseeded run - I would recommend having a subcategory to distinguish this (seeded vs. unseeded perhaps). What do y'all think?
(Also should there be a speedrun discord? I joined the main Windblown DC but there's no speedrunning channel on there)
Hey, first off, congrats on the run! I feel there needs to be some clarification on fresh file vs Any%. Is fresh file starting at the point you make a new file and any% is just everything else? If so, then I would think this would be the Any% WR since it's not a fresh file, you just saved all your resources until you had what you wanted. With that said, I would think they'd change how the unlocking works when the full game comes out. But if not, then this is probably the best way to do Any% currently.

I'm not going to submit my run for now to avoid confusion, as I think there should be a subcategory under Any% to signify seeded vs. unseeded. I've seen other roguelikes have this - Hades and Binding of Isaac for example.
[Edit] IMO it makes even more sense in this case as grinding out a new save file might be a barrier to entry for someone trying to get into the run.
Sounds good to me. This is the first game I've ever speedrun so I'm not sure how other roguelites do it. I'll do some research, but what you're saying makes sense to me. The discord doesn't have a speedrun channel so I think we should probably make one.

That's some very good observation. Indeed when creating the Any% category, I thought about having the possibility of having specific save file with only few items unlock to manipulate the RNG. And in fact, there is not a lot of possibility for us to control whether or not a run is made on a fully unlocked file, apart from having the player showing the unlocked tab of FR3ND 4EV3R at the end of the run.
So for me a run on a specific game file should be considered as Any%, even if it is made on a fresh file.
But you raise a very good point about starting runs with specific equipment. I hadn't thought at all about starting the run with a specific build and indeed this should be specified in the rule that the Any% must be started with the basic equipment.
So we could create a new custom run where players can start with the equipment of their choice.
From my point of view, I'd keep the seed/unseed option separate, in case in the future we have the choice (either through a new feature or through community tools) to select the seed of a run (the one you can see in the bottom left of your screen) which would fix the whole RNG of a run.
Do you agree with the new rule for Any% that would prevent the use of a specific starting build, and with the creation of a new "Custom" category for these runs?
Also i'll ask the CM from Motion Twin to know if it's possible to have a dedicated speedrun channel on the official discord, it will be easier for us to discuss there and it could also motivate people to speedrun the game.
Thanks! It feels like Any%, which is why I'd suggest it be a subcategory rather than a separate category. As for the name, I can imagine something like "Fresh start" vs "Custom start" (going off the name you suggested). What do you think?
Yep it can definitely be a sub category of the Any% category ! I'll create it today and update the rules. We could do a Normal start / Custom start, to avoid possible confusion with the Fresh file category. Does it makes sense ?
