Reginal differences

https://tcrf.net/Command_and_Conquer:_Generals#Regional_Differences Do these differences make German version the best choice for GLA campaign since there is one less mission?

how hard/easy is it to get your hands on a german version? Being 1 less mission short on GLA would be faster (by about 8 minutes), but if its nigh impossible to get that version without a physical cd, it might be too late for anyone to ACTUALLY run it. I guess there's always piracy though.....

Somehow I found the image of C&C Generäle disks. I legally owns the English version so it's not really piracy. It comes with patch 1.5, and I failed to update it to version 1.8. http://megagames.com/patches/command-conquer-generals-108-patch According to the change log, there are a few important changes to single player gameplay from patch 1.6 and 1.7: Version 1.7 - October, 2003

  1. FORCE FIRE - CHINA's Gattling Tanks can no longer force fire through buildings. Version 1.6 - July, 2003
  2. SCUD STORM ANTHRAX BETA BUG - GLA's Scud Storm now has the correct damage radius when upgraded with Anthrax Beta.
  3. CHINA GATTLING TANK BUG - China's Gattling Tank now correctly moves slower when it is damaged.
  4. GENERAL BALANCING ISSUES:
  • China's Gattling weapons now require Line of Sight to fire.
  • China's MiG cost increased from 1000 to 1200.
  • China's MiG Armor cost increased from 500 to 1000.
  • US's Cold Fusion Reactor Control Rod upgrade cost decreased from 800 to 500.

Most of these changes shouldn't affect the GLA campaign too much since you fight USA much more often than you fight China. Chinese Migs can be annoying in the final mission, but with the same build time, difference in prices shouldn't matter much.

Uploaded a run on German version 1.5. As you can see, there is no final cutscene in this version. Maybe we should change the timing rule so that the final mission ends at the black screen right after the player loses control.

I was curious how you got wr by so much, but now I see why... I'll have to look into this version a bit more. As for timing on the last level, I'd say keep it the same for full campaign runs, but maybe change it for IL timing

some people have expressed concern about the German version and skipping the 2nd Mission. Normally, regional differences make for a few small differences (like in text or basic mechanics) that may make 1 version faster than the other. However, the German version skips an entire mission, roughly 8 minutes (1/6th of the run) which (currently) is impossible to skip and has a much shorter final cutscene in the GLA campaign. Since the versions are so different, I propose that we make them separate categories to give the runners of the normal game a chance. how we handle this should be a group decision, so I'd like to hear some feedback from anyone who cares

France

I think that it's acceptable. The differences between the versions are too big.

France

Following the loss of my WR on Command&Conquer Generals, I got motivated to get back to speedrunning the game, so I trained (at the moment, I only did some preparation and haven’t recorded any new runs yet, but I did around 35-37min). But then I saw that the current WR, Fortranm’s run, lacked the second level, which is by my experience the longest one to complete, so it kinda threw me off : I think that if I didn’t count mission 2 in my run, I would be pretty close to WR. I didn’t understand why the run had been accepted like this, so I talked to CCNeverender who explained to me the deal in this run, that Fortranm runs the german version of the game (I run the french one), that lacks the aforementioned mission. I tried to find ways to download the german version, without success. CCNeverender then advised me to post here to discuss what to do.

I personally see these 2 solutions :

  1. We reach an agreement to run one specific version of the game that everyone could get (for example, the US one is easy to get).
  2. We create a leaderboard or a category specifically for the german version.

I think the best choices are 1) I’m posting here as I saw there were a lot more runners of the game since the time I got WR, and I’d like we discuss the issue together.

United States

I've changed the leaderboard for GLA Campaign so the German and Non-German versions are split into subcategories. I'd don't want to see Fortranm's effort go to waste, but there's also fairly notable difference when running the German version. This can be changed back in a heartbeat if necessary.
