Hello everyone, I'm pretty new to the whole speedrunning thing. I used to play a ton of Wii Tennis so decided to look up if anyone was doing it. Well, the record was 9.56 by rmb0257. which at first I didn't think much of it until I did my first few runs which clocked in between 13-16mins. After getting my ego checked and reviewing his run(s) I tried again and got a 12.55 which is 3minutes off the WR! Since then I've managed to get an 11.55.98, however, I wanted to try and get that down to sub11 in the next few weeks. Decided to get a forum up and running to talk RNG, strats, etc. to try and help anyone and everyone make a push close to the WR set by rmb0257 nearly 6months ago. It hypothetically is possible to go lower than the 9.56 he set but is going to be a long haul. I and SoyhoiBoy have been battling back and forth for 2nd place so hopefully we can help each other out and get closer to the WR.
1st ->The main strats I know is the losing 2nd game in round 5 which will boost you to 850+ in points and allow you to challenge the champ(s) in round 6. 2nd ->Obviously, there are the angle spin shots after the opponent's server that Rounds 1-3 cant return which can shave a bunch of time off if you can go all 12points in that fashion. 3rd ->I was curious if anyone knows if there's a specific way to move the remote to cause the first 1-2round opponents to miss the fast server altogether. I've found sometimes I can get them to miss the fast server 4+ times but other times they return the ball back into the court. 4th ->Net Spin shot: sometimes you can hit the ball at the net and it will double bounce before the opponent can hit it. I'm curious if there is a more sustainable way to hit the ball in this manner as it can shut a ton of rallies down before they start especially later rounds (4-ish,5,6).
Thank you to everyone that's read the forum!
Edit: net spin shot: I'm aware that rotating the controller can cause more topspin or backspin depending. What I'm curious to look into is to see if the way you hold and rotate the control has an effect on if the opponents can return the ball or let it bounce in front of them. If this does not matter then we can start to look at positioning of the player and opponent and see if that has something to do with it.
Update! I may have figured out a new "lose" strat to make the Round 4&5 opponents easier! one of the things i struggle with the most is shutting down long rallies (once they have started) with rounds 4 and 5 (assuming you lose no points getting to them). I was under the impression you had to get at least 850 (or more) points to vs the champions in the 6th round. however, this is not the case! I just beat the champs with only 843 points! I also VS much easier round 4 and 5 matchups. maybe I was just playing better (something ill test over the coming week) or maybe it's better to lose a few points in round 2 or 3 to get easier matchups while still being able to go up against the champs due to the Round 5-2nd game lose strat. This may allow for more successful runs and help at least make it easier to push past the crazy AI in rounds 4&5. This is just a theory and might just use more time than it's worth but it's something I'm going to attempt and see.
Time updates: Managed an 11:23.56 earlier today (no video) and then just managed an 11.20 and got it on video! will be submitting it later tonight!
Hey everyone!
Just another update for those that are following this forum. Been playing with some new strats and managed to get a 10.57 w/o a video and an 11.03 with a video. won't submit until I have a 10.4x or lower as that will put me below 1min away from the WR! The new strat was as follows: R1 - 3/5 R2 - 3/5 R3 - 3/5 R4 - 2/3 *lose second game R5 - 2/3 *lose second game R6 - 1 game R7 - champions I've had a few very good runs with this method however I do not think it's as time-efficient as the current way of doing things. My skills are super polished yet so maybe with practice, this could become a superior way of doing things. But I've found that it's allowed me to get better PB-paced runs because of the shorter duration of playing in round 4/5. there may even be a way to get the champions on round 6 but I still need to play around with everything and see.
On a different note, I haven't been able to play for about 4 days now and won't be able to do runs for another 7-10 days due to no access to my Wii. This sucks but once I'm back I will have a 10.4x run to post/submit! Mark my words! And then it is just about polishing my runs up and working my way down to the end game. I hope to provide some challenge and make the WR holder return as I want to see him push both Tennis WR's down further!
Edit: Once I get a 10.4X I'm gonna take a week or two breaks from the "beat the champ" category and run "Pro status" as I think I can bring some new competitiveness there as well! My best time there is a 15.5x but that was when I first started running and I've improved a ton
I wanna start running Pro Status Tennis but can't until I get back to my Wii which is still 5-6 days away :((
Hello XeQon, first of all sorry about not reaching you earlier on discord, but I rarely use it. Anyway, it seems as though you have already figured out the net spin shot, but yeah I just swing upwards with no spin with the front mii when I can. I wish you the best of luck, and let me know if you have any questions.
I've been experimenting dropping a game against certain teams to see which can provide faster times or not.
It's not worth dropping a game to Miyu and Matt, because you have to play one or two Single Games at least to get Elisa and Sarah after you win the next 4 games 3-0 without dropping a rally.
Dropping a game to Fumiko and Alex will require you to beat Tatsuaki and Maria, but you will get Elisa and Sarah afterwards, this potential route means you don't face pro players until 5th game.
For Luca and Akira, there's no point dropping a game to them, because you have to face Anna and Ashley next game and you have to beat Sarah and Tatsuaki to face Elisa and Sarah.
However, for Ai and Anna, dropping a game against them IS viable, because you can still reach Elisa and Sarah in the least matches possible which is 5, the same as dropping a game to Theo and Daisuke. After beating Ai and Anna dropping a game, you will then get Tyrone and Saburo who if you beat without dropping a rally in a 3-0 scoreline, you will get over 200 skill points.
New potential route goes like this:
Miyu + Matt - Fumiko + Alex - Luca + Akira - Ai + Anna (Drop game 2) - Tyrone + Saburo - Elisa + Sarah 3-0 - 3-0 - 3-0 - 3-1 - 3-0 - 1-0
Skill Points wise: 0 - 172 - 326 - 479 - 653 - 871 - 948
This route involves winning all matches without dropping a single rally.
This new route has a lot of room for error as well when you reach Tyrone and Saburo, one time when I had Saburo and Theo, I had game 2 going to Deuce, still went on to win 3-0 with a few other dropped rallies and still got Elisa and Sarah straight away with 817 skill points.
You could also get Saburo and Theo and even Theo and Daisuke I think, beat them 3-0 ideally without dropping rallies or as few as possible and get Elisa and Sarah next game if you drop a rally or two in the early matches.
Got a 10.36 yesterday night will be uploading and submitting soon! Due to an early mess up, I had to do the old route but I do believe with some more practice the new route is superior. The run had the potential to be a 10.2x but I dropped a few points and that didn't help. Less than a minute from the WR! So close yet so far, the more I do runs the more it feels impossible to do.
to Soy: I have no clue why there are versions or what the difference is? I just do runs on my old Wii from like 2008 or whenever they came out.
to rmb: uh oh, Time to grind!! haha It Will be cool to see you come back and see a sub 10min pro status tennis run!
also really cool to see but we have 3 new runners - at least new people who have submitted runs in the last week! hopefully, we keep seeing growth in wii tennis!
How to tell version differences 1.00 = No Remote Jacket + 2006 only on title screen (and a bunch of other differences in the games) 1.01 = Remote Jacket + 2006-2007 on title screen (also with in game differences) 1.02 = Has Remote Jacket + 2006-2008 on title screen, same as 1.01 in game but is part of the Wii Sports + Wii Sports Resort Combo Disc
Alright, for the record, do we know for sure now whether or not the new route (3-0, 3-0, 3-0, 3-1, 3-0, 1-0) is indeed faster than the old route (3-0, 3-0, 3-0, 3-0, 3-1, 1-0)?
We don't know 100%, I still hold that the old route is faster because it produces lower skill point opponents.
