Ingredients for a strong hero: 1x item to double movement points, 1x item to make his army fly: then you go zooooooomin across the map to all the other Strongholds to find good allies. Like 4x Dragons and get rid of the enemies one by one. I also had a lot of luck with new heroes arriving at decent times & cities. Sadly my great hero died in a very weird fight against a very week enemy... so that cost me some time.
