I grew up on GC and still love it due to it's way more limiting controls. It gives a much higher skill ceiling but it can also be harder to learn. Since the Switch version is the fastest and combines the control scheme of GC with updates and motion controls in NPC, this may be your best choice. Generally though, we just say run the version you enjoy best. They're separated by game and are no longer compared against, so it really is just a preference thing.
Apologies for that, I think it's because there's a .exe file. When I get the chance I will update the resources and guides to point potential runners to the source on GitHub, and you can get it that way. Check again soonish.
Recently the rules changed on the Randomizer leaderboard, allowing the use of a patch to your copy of Pikmin that removes the Intro cutscene and End of Day cutscenes. Further, use of Quick Onion Menuing code is allowed. These patches can be found in the resources for this category, and further help can be found in the rules, guides, or by asking in discord.
Due to this patch changing the times of runs, I have retimed all previous runs to reflect these changes.
Use this guide which will help getting set up: https://www.speedrun.com/pikmin_1_rom_hacks/guides/uhs7s
I started on PAL and can say it can make the learning curve easier since it's slower therefore easier. I played PAL for over 2 months at which point I was a 6 day runner. The point is you can play on any version and still build up skill if it suits you. After that if you want to be competetive on the leaderboard feel free to get NTSC.
Yes. Please perform your run and send it to the pikmin speedrun discord.
Tentatively verifying but your submitted times are suspect. Please consider timing your runs more accurately.
The leaderboard is intended for full game runs. However, there's nothing to stop you speedrunning it, and there is already a community of people competing for both All Treasures All Castaways (ATAC) and for 1500 sparklium (Demo Any%)! If you want to check out previous runs, the best place is #Pikmin4 in the Pikmin Speedrunning Discord.
This was played on the switch version. We will be adding this to the switch category when runs for those are included.
Hi, that is why the runs are separated on the main leaderboard into subcategories of Wii and GC. If you want to compare both you can also do that with the All tab.
Both have the same number of textboxes and for all known glitches are equal in time taken.
The final part weighs 85 on the Japanese version and 40 on the US, so actually carries faster. This difference is 10s or less, so it's noticeable but not a deal breaker.
Both versions are fine.
Of course! As long as you have the capacity to play it on a legitimate console, then runs can be submitted. Note of course that it will be the Wii NPC version and not the GC version when you make your submissions. -Mokay
Surely if categories can be done in exactly the same speed REGARDLESS of difficulty there is no rational argument for keeping it split into sub categories. While difficulty should be noted as a variable on the boards, it should be a single leaderboard that looks better to new prospective runners. It would also be way more inviting to submit a run if there was somewhere to do it with everyone else.
Speedruns should only be split by something that affects time of completion, anything else is silly.
That's right. Actual levels are not done in speedruns, but by highest score. You can compete by going for as high a score as possible. Most world records are on youtube, and all challenge mode leaderboards are here: https://chr.mn/pik4/ The site is japanese but with chrome you can translate all webpages. The best way to compete is to simply upload runs to youtube and join the community.
Since loading times are faster, generally at the top level it is not accepted. I will accept emulator times of 1:15:00 and above with proof, in special cases maybe lower. However, if you end up getting good enough I'd recommend getting a console version anyway. Piepusher has told me that we generally accept emulator runs, but I think there should be an upper limit where players should upgrade to console running.
