I recently did SO: FDR for the 12 hour speedrun, and attempted to write down some sort of speedrun guide for me/the community, since I noticed there were no current guides for beginners.
I mostly jotted down some bullet points and the lore while watching some runs, and want to hopefully get a guide/resource on the SR page. So, I put my notes in an editable google link, in hopes that we can get the ball rolling there.

This game seems to be popping, and I plan on joining in the fray once I upgrade the Switch version to PC later this week/weekend.

Yep, I do the exact same strat. Sometimes grabbing the checkpoint for health/marathon safety.
I don't know if it really saves time or anything, but I always hug to the right during the entire level and everytime I do, I never seem to get a second "save me" section. Instead, I get the "Thanks fox!" animation from my companions.
Is this anything that could help/hurt the run?
I'm submitting for AGDQ this year, and tbh I'm thinking about a race. I think, if we all got together and performed a race of Star Fox SNES 1.2, with commentators, that may show the complexity of the game.
Of course, I just now picked up a 1.2, and I've been running 1.0 for a while now. We'll see how the change is ;-)

The honestech one? I have Window 10 and use it for streaming all my SD games. The Elgato HD as well. We also may have a Dazzle and a couple others if staff brings their own cards.
We will have macs there, I believe. Does that help at all?
- Are you talking about what capture cards we have? I, for one, do not have any type of internal SD/HD graphics card but instead have a Honesttech Vidbox capture card for HD, and an el Gato 60 for HD capture.
- My only PSP games are Star Ocean, so can't help ya there. But we're going to have a lot of multiplayer/chill games during the nights
- The staff should have enough to cover, but if you want to bring any extras you're more than welcome. I personally have NES, SNES, Super Famicom, N64, Wii, Wii-u, Switch, PS2-4 I'm bringing for extra games and what-not.
