Hello!
I've searched around a bit, and it appears that there is no existing Discord Server based around Wario Land: Shake It!. I have created the following server, therefore, to serve as a future hub for anyone interested in this game - be it speedrunning or casual play.
Hop on in and join the discussion!
Not too long ago, 140 received an update on the Steam version which included the addition of a fourth level and a complete remaster of the physics. While this has not resulted in a great deal of potential optimal times for Any%, it has resulted in significant strategy modifications and has given to a new category - All Levels. The addition of an Individual Levels leaderboard has also been implemented.
While this has reinvigorated the interest of speedrunning 140, it has also led to controversy dealing with how these new speedruns are to be compared with speedruns done on the original (legacy) version; there are very clear differences between the two, and many believe that simply comparing them directly is out of the question.
Please discuss here your thoughts regarding leaderboard formatting, version comparisons, and any other subjects of interest that have given rise as a result of this recent update.
An IL board sounds like a super idea, given the fact there is an in-game timer for each level that records personal bests. That being said, would there have to be any differentiation between platforms? If I remember, there's a bit of a framerate difference or something when Wii is involved. Regardless, IL's are always fun to optimise, especially when there are strats that aren't run-safe.

After some discussion among the staff, we have decided it may be beneficial to rename the current major category (Any% NLS) to something easier to follow. While we are mostly in agreement, we feel as though this is a subject that requires community feedback.
The following Strawpoll will be up until April 21, after which, a decision will be made. Thanks for your participation!
Oh, this thing. It's a frame perfect wall jump (omega boost) that involves doing a max height double jump off of the bottom exploding block. You can't get high enough from omega boosting off a ground level max height jump, as you will bonk after doing the omega boost. It's only around a second slower compared to boosting in the bottom corner or using the jetpack.

Hey plankboii.
There are two different routes you can take for the second gem in Chapter 1 Act 1 Scene 3, so I'll assume it's the gem under the cat you're going for. My strat involves doing a max height double jump onto the left side of the lower cloud platform, so that it baits the cat to the left. This will allow you to run right, off the right ledge of the cloud, and right up to the top layer of clouds or block platform 3 blocks above.
If you need any additional help finding setups, learning routes, or are just interested in general movement/mechanics, you should join the community Discord server! There are almost always people online who know their stuff and should be able to help out. Here's an invite link.

Anyone who has been appointed to moderator status, and therefore given the ability to verify runs, has already proven that they are trustworthy enough to verify runs to begin with. What I take from that thread is that, although there may be suspicion by nature, the primary reason it's recommended to wait for another moderator to verify a run is to correct any accidental mistakes on the submission's information - not within the run itself.
Now, if a moderator is self-verifying runs that have been tampered with, that's another issue - but will eventually be found out and dealt with.
The following change (reversion) has been made and applied to all current relevant submissions after discussion in the community Discord server.
Any times submitted to the leaderboards with milliseconds included will be rounded down to the listed full second time. This is to cut back on any potentially inaccurate leaderboards rankings, and will make the reading the leaderboard easier. The option to add millisecond precision to submissions was only intended for Challenge Individual Level speedruns, and is going to be kept that way from now on.

After discussion among the staff of both here and speedrun.com, we have agreed upon the following changes and alterations to the submission rules. Most of these changes won't affect anything you've been doing, but will clarify on previously confusing wording, unnecessary/redundant rules, and general run accessibility and convenience. Listed below are the most significant changes.
Challenge any% runs have had the run start timing changed to better resets. For Challenge Co-Op and Challenge Solo, the following rules have been modified, respectively. Timing starts upon entry of the first level. This is to make for readily accessible resets, while the old timing required four players to start a new lobby in order to run again.
Timing starts upon entry of the first level. This is to make for readily accessible resets, while the old timing required you to exit to the main menu and navigate to the challenge select lobby in order to run again.
The names have also been changed from "Solo Challenge Any%" and "Co-Op Challenge Any%" to fit the full game naming scheme.
Challenge Solo Challenge Co-Op
As far as video proof is concerned, we have also agreed that certain evidence is no longer required, strictly based on the position on the leaderboard claimed. For any of the full game runs (Any%, Any% No Level Skips, and 100% in both Solo and Co-op varieties), any new potential top 5 run submission requires video proof. Due to lesser popularity, Challenge Solo and Challenge Co-Op only require video proof for a potential Top 3 position run.

Thanks for sticking with us, lately! It's awesome seeing the community grow lately, and if it weren't for you guys looking for new strats and actively running, we wouldn't have felt the need to update things for the better. There are a few more things currently in the works and being discussed, and we will keep you posted as more changes occur.
Anyone interested in being part of the active community, please feel absolutely welcome to use the BattleBlock Theater Discord invite link, which has been stickied in the forums.
Happy Running!
Hey!
Figured it would be most convenient to put together a Discord to share strats, runs, glitches, and other game-related stuff. Hop on in!
Hey!
Yes, it's been known that exiting during or after the "saving hatty" cutscene triggers the credits. However, the final split/time has always been at the first frame of touching the boat after said cutscene. Changing this to a pause exit would not only require retiming of every full game run, but it would cause a variant end time in a manner that would be unfair and counter-intuitive in future runs.
That being said, this suggestion would be congruent to asking runs to end upon landing on the exit block of Chapter 8 Finale 2, as that would require no pause exits to begin with. Having runs include the final walk to the boat is the way it's always been done, and skipping a '25 second autoscroller' would be rather pointless, seeing as it's impossible to choke during that segment. Many games include "post-gameplay gameplay" in similar fashions, and including an few dozen constant seconds in the span of an hour-and-a-half run will not be detrimental on any leaderboard, personal best, or world record.

Hey bitpersonal1,
The reason NG categories do not exist as a leaderboard is due to the fact that nobody wants to run them. They would be needlessly long, require complete rerouting, and involve much more rng simply due to the nature of the run.
That being said, if you would like to run either of these suggested categories, feel free to do so! Speedrunning is meant to be an enjoyable experience, not a chore. I'll gladly verify any NG run you submit, so long as they follow the rules and guidelines outlined in their respective categories.

In Boom Room, I only use the force ball, and I use it twice - once to get up the wall before the first checkpoint, and once on the bottom right to wall jump from standing on the ice through the right side of the clouds. I go under the breakable blocks at the end; you can walk off and have the lava block bounce you right under and use your double jump to reach the other side faster.
Awesome! Looking forward to seeing your strats. Don't worry about being a few seconds behind, though. We all run against the game time, not against other runners. A leaderboard is just a glorified list of PB's.
Oh, and do you play on PC or Xbox? I'm on console myself. We could discuss routing and such. Are you familiar with omega boosting (wall jumping)? It's extremely useful in a variety of level designs.
Some players don't have access to a camera (myself included), and I have a good idea of the fastest times possible for each level. I'll believe you if your times are within reason. But feel free to do so. :)
Due to a few requests, I think it's reasonable to allow Challenge mode IL runs to be submitted without video. They're short enough and will be more accessible this way. Full-game and Chapter runs will still require video, however.
Alright, tried messing around with what the leaderboards are capable of producing, and I think this is the best way to arrange things. instead of having Challenge mode in the Level Leaderboard, I threw it under the Full-game leaderboard as misc. categories. For the time being, I've added actual level names for Solo Challenge IL's and Level 1, Level 2, etc. for Coop Challenge IL's.
What are your thoughts? Can you think of any improvements? Do you prefer having actual level names versus numbered levels?
Thanks. -GG
