Will see to maybe check the other stars later.
But, since this game is not that active, might not do that soon.
Hello!
I have been thinking to maybe come back to this game and I was looking at random IL. Some of them have "offset starting frame" in some case, causing to be 1 frame slower/faster (depending how you see it). That "offset starting frame" is something that I did mention at that time to some people (but most probably forgot about it). It only happen for level that are inside other level because of how the timer code works.
There is a difference of 1 frame if you started the timer code before entering the sub-level versus started it before entering the top-level. (Or something like that, I don't 100% remember the details)
I did not check all IL time for star in level with sub-level. (maybe later) But, I checked for : Creepy Cap Cave Star Replica I compared all runs from the frame where the black star transition is exactly covering half the timer. Which is : 0.40 or 0.43 : depending if you have the "offset starting frame" or not
I will use 0.40 as the "correct" value A mod can feel free to double check, but here are my results: (NOTE : For youtube video, you can press "," or "." to frame backward/advance)
EDIT : Formatting keep breakings... so I made a google sheet for it instead.

Feel free to add me as a mod, I don't mind validating run and managing stuff if needed.
I also might be interested in speedrun+ mode, after that I am done with the normal speedrun mode.
But, since the only moderator for the game at the moment is SteveZero, and I have no idea if he check the forum, might be better to send him a message directly?
For my part, since I am probably not doing speedrun+ mode soon, I will just wait if he respond here.
After some talks, it is very clear that mostly everyone want video proof for a run to be accepted. Even if the video quality is poor.
It has been added to the rules for clarification.
I would not mind if you send a time without video proof, as long as it is not below 1h15m? (Not sure)
But, this is only my opinion, I do not talk for all the players/moderators. I will ask the people in the StarTropics discord, it could be something we add to the rule, even if we decide to always require video proof.
If you decide to give StarTropics a try to speedrun, feel free to join the discord and ask away if you have any question!
I will try to reply to this thread again when an answer will be decided.
Oh, hello!
I was able to get multiple top time using the Wayback Machine website. I made a video of all my PB, that also contains a description with more information:
If by chance you want to run against my PB, I saved all my in game replay here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1iQinTccz6ijCL5f-Nf8_if_RylrBWlUv?usp=sharing
Feel free to contact me on Discord or PM me on twitch if you want to talk more about the game :)
Feel free to join the Discord and/or contact me directly if you want more info.
I do have in my notes somewhere how to replicate it, at least, the first part of the glitch. There is 3 or 4 variables that needed to match up, which are not too hard to make them match. (With RAM watch of course)
Also, at the time I posted the video, I did not know Assembly6502, but I do now, I could probably help you with that a little (not an expert thought!).
Finally, just for the TAS in general, there is a lot that I know about how the game work, I might be able to help you some extra frame on multiple place! (There is multiple thing the current TAS does not do).
Hey :)
It might be better to send a message to a mod directly on Discord.
Hornlitz have its Discord linked on his profile.
Hello,
I was wondering if there is a place where there is all the individual level speedrun WR, I would like to see if I can beat some challenging time :)
I sadly just found out about this game some days ago, and I am loving it! But well, this game is about 9 years old, so I am a little late to the party...
If there is not anything, well, maybe I could try to start something on a Google Drive Sprite Sheet for now, and try to ping some people if they would be willing to help to add there time, or something... but might not be worth the effort, since there is probably close to no one at the moment (except me) playing that game haha.
Of course it will be allowed if there is no major difference. So far, all rerelease of the game were correct, so, it is most likely going to be fine.
First of all, hello and welcome!
We are not hard on validation/verification here since the StarTropics speedrun community is pretty small. And since the game does not lag on a NES, there isn't a valid big enough reason to reject emulator run.
Feel free to submit your time, but I have no idea if this website accept Vimeo links (I think it does), so if this does not work, you could instead send a link to your twitch vods or upload it on youtube.
First of all, welcome! :)
FOR : THE GLITCH ¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤ I know a little why it did happen but I am not sure HOW it did happen.
In the game, there are multiple values that keep track of each dungeon you have done (the hallway before chapter 6 count as a dungeon even if you only need to go up to finish it) If you enter a dungeon that the game think is "done", there will always be a door to block the way.
The game strangely had this values set to "done" but no idea why. It is possible to glitch your save file name when holding start after killing certain bosses but I am not sure if it can work to glitch dungeon flags and I also doubt that you did hold start after killing a boss.
I never got the glitch you got in any speedrun attempts and as far as I know, never happened to most of the runners of this game I know.
FOR : IF YOUR RUN WILL STILL COUNT IF IT HAPPEN ¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤ For most speedrun in general, reset to load a previous save file is fine, and it is the same for this game, as long as you select the same file of course.
Oh, I was thinking about creating one haha I guess I will just join this one right away!
Hello!
Video Here, explanation after!
Alright, so, this glitch is not RTA friendly for the moment but I am trying to find a way to make this work.
Still not sure what are all the conditions for this to work.
If some people would like to help to hunt this glitch down, would be appreciated!
Some observations :
-
You need to buffer a pause while the mini-boss is doing his death animation, when the pause happen, you need to buffer another pause (Not sure if you buffer it or need to be perfect timing)
-
Position SEEMS to be important for the reason that I was able to get the glitch multiple time at the position in the video but not anywhere else so far.
-
It is a 2 frames window (or I think?) because sometime you will have a full black screen with only the dungeon selection and sometime you get the one in the video.
Fun Fact You soft lock if you select any previous Dungeon (Because the door to start a dungeon will be close since the flag will be TRUE because you finished the dungeon already, and you will be stuck in the overworld)
Also need to know if people would want to allow the glitch or not for any%..
The script as been done for a while, but until more people are interested, I will keep it to myself for now (and Demo that have tested it) It is also more user friendly then the initial way I wanted to make it work.
Now create a new window with everything on it so the emulator window have no extra UI element.
Yea, it is what I found out after i_o_l respond to this thread.
The first point in darbian's guide was to talk about versions, but he just said that all version for any% are equal but he probably was talking about all USA/Japan versions are equals and because of it, I did not take the time to check the version I was using.
There is also no section for SMB1 for PAL run (Which some game do) because, like you said, around 10 sec difference is probably not worth it to create a new section for it. And there was another reason I just thought the version I had was fine.
Anyway, thanks for the information c:
Oh, alright so I was not crazy then, there was something that wrong about it, in a way.
EDIT : Like excepted, something was wrong, was using the PAL Version. This thread can now be ignored, <.<
I started playing SMB1 2-3Hrs ago (watching darbian any% guide) and he explains that to be faster by 1 Frame Rule you need to do only 2 backward jump and bump on a wall instead of 3 which is not safe since each "bump" move your X position at max by 10, which you need twice to get a X position of at least 132 which then after, to enter in the pipe, will need to be frame perfect.
So, slow method = 254, fast one = 255, Right? (Not 100% sure since 1 time = 20 frames and the Frame Rule is 21 apparently)
Current WR and Second Place use a 3 "bumps" method and enter the pipe at 254.
Testing stuff, I am currently using a 2 "bumps" method that , from multiple testing, give me a X position of minimum 133 and on average, X of 136, up to 139, which make the frame perfect pipe entrance not that hard since it does not need to be pixel perfect anymore.
I would like to know if the video below with the setup, is valid or did I forgot some factor that I do not know about this game that will make this 2 "bumps" setup invalid for a run.
I am a little confuse because the setup is so simple and stupid and it is way easier then doing a triple backward jump and should be faster by a Frame Rule compare to the current top records of this game.
