Hi, I recently bought the GOG version of RE2 and I don't see anyone playing this version. Is it okay to speedrun this version?
From what I know the GOG version is based on the 1999 PC release. Thus it's probably not allowed, being the SourceNext version the one to run.
We are testing it atm . But from my first impression :
-it doesnt run on legacy fps so its slower
-has tons of bugs (for example no mask at the corner where u usually do quickcroc)
- rebirth isnt campatible with it
-realy poorly looking compared to Sourcenext
- they have used the old bad PC version from 98 and not the 8 years later released Sourcenext
So my first opinion on this is that it makes no sense to allow a slower more inconsistent PC Version of the game when we have already a good working one. And also makes it no Sense to double the categorys just for an bad Port, when we have already a better one.
Someone on the GOG forums explained that the sourcenext and Classic REbirth patch for Resident evil 2 is working. I leave said post here for anyone to check it out:
Is it just working with the hd-mod?
What exe is the right one then? Bc GoG has 2 exe one for claire and one for Leon
If the rebirth patch works on GoG isnt it just sourcenext version? I mean its easier to patch the 2006 version than GoG and if it is the exact same rebirth version then we all run the same version anyway
After reading the comments, I think it's better to use the Sourcenext version.
Let me get this straight. There is an official and legal version of the game and there is no speedrun category for it? That is ridiculous. If it is generally slower than the NextSource version, why not let people submit with the GoG version? There is no harm and it opens up the speedrun community to potential new players. All you are doing by requiring an antiquated version is gatekeeping against the current and future generations of gamers.
If the timing differences favor the gog runner then it can't just be mixed in with existing board (which a slower timer would imply)
It's also true that, being the current legal version, it would be nice maybe for those that own it to be able to submit their runs. I'm not sure if Sourcenext+Rebirth running better in some ways is enough reason to not make, at least, a separate board for it.
I tested fps on GoG and it runs a bit smoother than SN. GoG often reaches like 30fps. SN is more like 28-29fps and rarely reaches 30fps. GoG also looks more like the Chinese version or the old PC port before SN came out.
So in theory GoG is slower IGT
Would be nice to have something to see IGT in livesplit like we have for SN to really test it.
GoG with rebirth patch(speedrun edition) would be fine as it forces the correct FPS, in theory it'd be identical to sourcenext timing wise, i don't have the GoG version so can't test it with rebirth myself.
Unpatched GoG definitely has no place on the PC board.
If the most current and publicly available PC version of a game has no place on the PC board, then either the PC rules need to be changed to catch up with the times or a new category needs to be made. People shouldn't have to modify software to have a speed run acknowledged.
TLDR: Make the community more inviting, not less inviting.
You dont need to modify anything, just get vanilla SN version and just patch it to 1.1 and you good to go. Im not against a seperate leaderboard for GoG but the truth is that GoG is not a good pc port if you compare it with SN. Its an effortless cashgrab imo. Same with the other classic GoG RE's.
Personally, i would love to be able to run a version of the game that I can showcase at an event, and that if somebody sees it wants to try it, they don't have to jump through a lot of hoops just to try it
