Console / Emu / Region seperation?

Hello! Its amazing to finally see die hard trilogy up on the website after all these years!

Just questioning why there is no separate categories for console and emulation?

Just cos emulation always runs faster than console and when it comes to regions, you might already be aware of the speed differences between 50hz PAL and 60hz NTSC.

Cheers for adding the game!

Love this game!

Heya!

Thank you =)

I've essentially based my categories for this game on other leaderboards I've seen posted here that allow run submissions from EM and OG Hardware in the same category.

With any runs that get posted here you can choose to specify if you've run the game on OG hardware or an emulator, but they're all operating under the assumption that people running this game will be running either NTSC or PAL roms at the console's stock speeds, and not using any settings to artificially speed them up and cheat.

All runs submitted are played as they would originally be intended to be, the exception to this would be any glitched any% runs.

I don't think separating EMU runs it into it's own category would be something I'll be doing for this leaderboard for now, but if needed I may put further clarification in the rules about emulation.

I'm always open to feedback to help improve this category!

All the best

Like for example i wasnt specifying speeding up things or cheating just basically saying that emu is always for fastest for any game, and NTSC will always be faster than PAL no matter the game

Not exactly true about NTSC being always faster, there are a few games out there where PAL is faster than NTSC such as Colin McRae Rally 2.0 as a great example.

In terms of seperating the game between console and emulator whilst we can do that it seems a bit pointless given there are not that many people running this game yet.

If the game gets more popular then I think it'd be worth splitting the two but for now I'd say anything goes.

Just an update to this, I have decided to create separate categories for OG hardware runs and Emulator runs :) Regions will still be mixed in both categories but the platforms will be the only distinction made going forward.

This is not due to a sudden bout of any kind of platform elitism or anything like that (I honestly don't really care about that kinda thing so long as runs are legal), I'm just doing this to keep the leaderboards looking neater =)

You must be right, too much of a mess, we needed some neat looking leaderboards. Difference between 11 month ago and now is quite huge. We understand why you changed your mind !

Or it's the age-old policy of divide and rule. It would be more interesting to try to bring more competitivity rather than splitting empty leaderboards.

I'm definitely open to suggestions if you guys have any that could help bring more competition to the game or just feedback on the leaderboards in general, honestly.

If people think having the leaderboards back to how they were then I'll happily move them back to them being mixed.

My opinion is the same, a separation because of the hardware used (keyboard) could be understandable as it's not possible to use it on a PS1. But separating because of a real playstation used or an emulator that reacts and runs the game exactly the same as the playstation (without the possible disc reading issues) makes no sense to me.

But it's gonna be worse than the current situation. We'll need to prove using a keyboard provides a real advantage compared to a gamepad and I doubt it. It's just buttons in both cases, it cannot be compared to gamepad and mouse using two different techs for aiming in FPS games for example.

Honestly, I just wish we had more runners on this game to bring real competition and have a bigger leaderboard. I'd love to see records being beaten over time. It was looking empty before and it's worse now.

Recently we had a new runner submit a run the Duckstation emu which has lead to a debate on this very topic. I've done some tests with a PAL and NTSC rom against a PAL console copy and it does seem to show that there is an advantage at least with DH2.

These were done using Viper's settings on Duckstation using a controller.

I'd be really curious to know what your emulator settings are so I can further compare :)

All the details are on my run descriptions, I just made sure the settings were according to the rules. I didn't really dig further. I remember I even switched from ePSXe to Duckstation to fit the requirements easily, and like I said the only things I've modified after matching those requirements were only graphic improvements. I didn't want to modify anything wrong as I'm less aware of those technical issues.

It's hard to see huge differences on the comparison video as it also depends on the timings the enemies are shot and tbf I'm ignorant about DH2. Something interesting is the animation of the grenade is faster with NTSC and the game looks fluid. I don't understand how you were able to save so much time but DH2 is basically animations all the time.

When I'll have more free time I will try to do that on DH1, I'm curious if there is a big difference there too.

The trouble is that there aren't any runners except @iida_teacher that have an NTSC console to test with, so it could well be that NTSC hardware behaves near enough the same as the emulated copy does. I think once we've have a chance to test on a NTSC and compare against Duckstation then we'll have a much better idea of how much on and actual advantage emulation give runners over consoles for DH2.

I will say that after running DH2 with a modern mouse through emulation it does feel WAY faster to play than I'd imagine the rollerball PS1 mouse would be like.

New Auto Split resources for Emu Runners

Hey all!

Just a quick update to say that @kapdap has kindly made some atuosplit tools for each game for people to use with their EMU runs to give everyone the most accurate timers possible.

For those new to using auto splits with Livesplit here's a video I found that should help get you started -
