Basic Strats Tutorial!

So the first ever mechanical strat tutorial! In this video, I'll be covering the Turbo Jump, the Drop Swing, the Acid Drop, Turbo Recovery on a Roller, and the Overdrive.

Cheats Information

Cheats

Press R + Z on the title screen to enter codes. Press Start to finish the code. You should hear a sound upon hitting Start if it worked. When you go into a level (any mode other than Trainin’), hit Start and there should be a new option called “CHEAT MENU”. Toggle unlocked cheats in there. Note: CHEAT MENU is not available in TRAININ’.
Note: The codes are the same in the Japanese version of the game, using the English alphabet.
These are listed in the order they appear in the CHEAT MENU. TOOMUCHPIE is listed twice because it unlocks two cheats at once, FAT MODE and BOMB PHYSICS. They can still be toggled separately.

HAPPYHEADS: ALL CHARACTERS (Unlocks all characters except Lizzy. WARNING - If you already had Lizzy unlocked, she becomes ununlocked, you can’t choose her anymore. Even if you turn off the code, she is still not unlocked anymore. She may also become impossible to unlock, but I’d have to verify this)
THEUNIVERSE: ALL WORLDS (Not only are all levels unlocked, but worlds 6 and up are unlocked for Easy and Iggy’s Challenge is unlocked for Medium. Maybe they’d become categories?)
JUMPAROUND: LEVEL SELECT (This opens a new menu on the pause menu below the CHEAT MENU option called GOTO #. GOTO 0 is level 0-1 and it goes up to GOTO 99, which is level 9-10)(Battle mode levels are listed when you pause and are 103-112, but if you move to it, it immediately changes to 99 before you can do anything with it. I don’t know what levels 100-102 are, but my guess is that one of them is TRAININ’ and another is the mini tower that shows your completion percentage when starting a race)
SWOPSHOP: MIX N’MATCH (You get random accessories of different characters that changes every level, eg, Lizzy’s twintails or Cecil’s glasses)
ROLFHARRIS: PENCIL (Everything is visually black and white with only thin black outlines of the models. HUD disappears. Think “Take On Me” by a-ha)
TOOMUCHPIE: FAT MODE (Physics are unaffected. I don’t think hitboxes are affected, but it’s hard to tell for sure. Same code as bomb physics, they are separate codes, both are unlocked at the same time and can be toggled separately)
MICROBALLS: TINY MODE (Same as above, but small instead of big)
2ROKTOO: DARK-CITY (Turok 2 engine’s lighting)
ICEPRINCESS: ICE MODE (All platforms turn into ice platforms, including previously goo and armor platforms. Roll sections are unaffected. If the goo password is also activated, that one takes priority and there will be no ice platforms)
GOOEYGOOGOO: SLIME MODE (Same as above. If the ice password is also activated, this one takes priority and there will only be slime platforms)
BOMBERBALL: JUST BOMBS (The only things you can get from the item boxes are bombs. Only affects Battle mode, does not affect Race mode)
1HITWONDERS: SUDDEN DEATH (Not actually sudden death, you start with 1 large orb of health in Battle mode instead of 3 large orbs. You can still survive one small orb of damage. Only affects Battle mode, no effect in Race mode)
TOOMUCHPIE: BOMB PHYSICS (The bomb it’s referring to is the bomb you become in Battle mode when you die and there are still 2 or more players left. You can jump very high [like 3 layers] and jump through metal. You can still duck, flap, and rollburst, but you cannot grapple)(This could make for an interesting category)
IMALLOUT: NO WEAPONS (Only affects Battle mode. The item boxes are still there, but they become obstacles and you don’t get anything from them. You can’t go through them, they are basically small walls)
NONSTOP: ROLL MODE (Constant state of rolling, like the tail end of a rollburst. You can grapple and flap, but you can’t use rollbursts or duck. You can only use items if you are also grappling at the same time. You also fall very quickly)
NOGOODIE: BOMB PICKUPS (This affects all modes besides Time Trials. All item boxes become bombs. The item boxes themselves are not there, instead there are bombs. These bombs have no time limit and are replaced instantly once they explode. If you are invincible, you can cause them to explode either every frame or every other frame. They behave as enemy bombs, so you can’t move them)
2TIMES: 2X TURBO TIME (Rollbusts last twice as long. The initial speed boost is the same, you just keep roll mode longer. However, if you jump and land, you get the burst keep)
SIOOTSHOT or SHOOTSHOT: BLUE BALLS (All item pickups become Standard Projectiles, ie, the 3 blue balls, both in battle and in race mode)[The code you enter depends on what version of the game you have. If one doesn’t work, try the other]
OIMY or OHMY: EXPLOSIVE MODE (The bomb explosion effect appears every time you land or grapple, leading to near constant explosion effects. This does not actually affect the gameplay in any way, it’s only visual)[The code you enter depends on what version of the game you have. If one doesn’t work, try the other]
GOBABY: FULL TURBO (Activating a rollburst does not deplete the meter. In other words, you have infinite rollbursts.)


Fake Codes/Cheats:
On player select, hit Z, A, left, right to unlock hidden characters [Just untrue, I’ve tested this in as many ways as I could think of. It doesn’t work before pressing start. After pressing start, pressing Z will then choose a random character, making the code impossible to enter.]

GOOEYICEPRINCESS: Goo and ice platforms [This code is too long and cannot be entered]
ENTAROADUN: Unlock Lizzy [This does not work unfortunately, makes no confirmation sound. I do appreciate the StarCraft reference though]
TOOMUCHFUN: Bouncy physics [Does nothing, no confirmation sound]
PENCIL: Pen and ink mode [Not a code, it’s the cheat menu name for ROLFHARRIS]

Speed strats (WiP)

Speed Strats

7-2 Lap skip found accidentally. After finishing lap 1, I boosted immediately to the left into the acid, then when Evan picked me up, he took me to the finish line again. I’m guessing I boosted so quickly that the game hadn’t updated my “last touching” platform, or my checkpoint, and the last spot I had been on was the finish line. UPDATE: I have tried to replicate this in many ways and have not had success. I need to figure this out, it’s a massive time save.

In armored sections, if there’s a pushie or stompie, you can bounce off the top of them to go through the armor. This saves a lot of time in some areas. It’s also possible with a spikie, but it’s harder and it’ll stun you. It also depends on how close together the platforms are. You can do this with opponents too, but it’s unpredictable and can easily make things worse.

You can use the rotation swing attack on opponents and stompies or spikies. One full rotation refills one boost, so it’ll probably be worth it at some point in the game.

You can use a boost to grab the finish line instantly, rather than waiting to fall onto it. This can even be done while still grappling up to it.

You can swing jump through armor. This may be why you sometimes pass through armor while boosting and grappling quickly through armor sections as well.

C down will zoom the camera out and C-up will zoom it in. Three levels of zoom, default is middle. How does this affect lag? Also, this is useful for one of the last levels where you need to scale tons of tiny ice platforms.

Duck to break ice immediately.

It’s possible to grapple an enemy and throw them up onto the platform above you. This is bad when done to CPU, but could be useful with the stage enemies. Throw a red stomper onto the platform above, especially when waiting for a cycle anyway, then use it to bounce through armor. I did this once by accident, but while it can be used to save time, I doubt it’ll be used in very many places. It’s pretty circumstantial.

It’s possible to move quickly, usually using a conveyor belt, and run into an opponent and have it launch you very high into the air. It’s also possible to do this either moving quickly or with a rollburst and run into an item box or hammer and be launched into the air.

Dropping down multiple floors is faster with grappling than with ducking, especially with certain characters, like Lizzy. This depends on how close together the platforms are.

If you are moving and do a short swing quickly, you do a quick swing. It’s not a very high jump, but it is almost instant and can still go through armor. It’s a difficult trick to pull off though. While moving, hit down or even a little in the opposite direction of your movement and B.

You can do something I’ll call float clipping. While floating from either a fan or bubbles (I think they behave identically, should look into), you can float through a platform and clip onto it and start moving immediately. This cuts out the floating down and landing, which is slow.

Ducking makes you immune to anything and everything, including conveyors, roll sections, being directly on top of a flower and even Evan!

Bursting in the air gives you the property of the ground below you (which is how burst finish works), but this can also be applied to roll sections, slime, ice, etc. It also makes your checkpoint the platform below where you did a rollburst. For example, if you rollburst in the air above a platform and go straight in the acid, it won’t bring you back to where you last touched ground but instead to the point below where you activated the rollburst.

As soon as you grapple a platform at an angle (not straight above you), hold down + the direction you are moving with precise timing (it’s almost immediately) and you’ll be launched up higher than quick swing, so you can go through armor. Pretty consistent once you get the timing and angles of it all right. Also, DON’T JUMP!

Cannot acid bounce into plunger or warp.

Roll sections are functionally the same as armor in that you can’t drop down or grapple down them or grapple up them, but you can clip through them from below.

You can jump back onto a roll section and with precise timing continue jumping backward along it. I can only see this being useful for recharging more rollbursts, which again I can only find useful for testing purposes.

When choosing the world by moving left and right, doing this with the d-pad is slightly faster for some reason. If going through all 10 worlds, it saves about a second. This also applies to all other menus after the character select. Using the d-pad for choosing a level in time trial moves it very quickly, almost too quickly to make use of it.

It looks like mashing A makes you fall more slowly while flapping than just holding it. I sure hope this isn’t useful anywhere.

Race and multiplayer in general adds a lot of lag. The bomb items add a TON of lag, so do what you can to keep them off screen, especially when they explode. This may involve zooming the camera in.

Level 1-3 I went up the fan but fell just short of the armor, started to fall and grappled upward and somehow managed to grapple the far right edge of the left armor. This may mean that armor is able to be grappled on the very edge, but it may also just be an error of this one spot.

Zooming in as opposed to zooming out seems to cut down on the lag by quite a bit. This makes it hard to navigate, but if the level is memorized, it would save time in Race. Lag is almost a non-issue in Time Trial though.

Ultra Swing - Burst one direction, quick swing (hold straight down and grapple), as soon as quick swing starts just release the stick back to neutral, then when landing you keep burst, wait a moment, then quick swing again. So far I normally gain 2-3 layers of height but sometimes I gain 5(!) layers. UPDATE: Ok, figured something out at least. It has to do with your height before you start the first rollburst. Bouncing or jumping first then starting the whole process has led to far more success.

Hold down the A button instead of mashing when the score is being tallied between levels, it’s faster. Still need to hit A to end it and move on to the next level though. Found by MigratingPig.

Shaking off Evan - after hitting the acid, Evan will want to pick you up. If you’re fully moving in a direction, however, he will decide to leave you alone. If you burst too soon, he will pick you up anyway, it needs to be normal movement. After shaking him off, you can then burst, though if you do so too soon he will come right back and grab you anyway.

The Inverted Grapple

A new trick has been discovered from a TAS created by Prosmasher64 on YouTube, and published on June 26th, 2021

This trick is known as the Inverted Grapple. 

This is an example of what it looks like and how it's performed. A player must turbo, and while in Turbo mode, hold down on the analog stick, and simultaneously press A and B. This will allow the ball to launch. 

*The specifications of this trick are unknown, or how the mechanics actually work. But a video example is provided and will be updated as time goes on.*

Unlock Lizzy – Cheater%

This run must be started from a file that doesn't already have Lizzy Unlocked

TIME STARTS WHEN PRESSING R+Z TO ENTER THE CHEAT MENU

From the main menu press R+Z to open the cheat menu. Enter the cheats THEUNIVERSE (This unlocks all levels) and JUMPAROUND (This allows you to select levels in the pause menu)

Select your character (A basic speed test has been done here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvRJY4KSu7A)

Go into “Race” and enter Iggy's Challenge

Once the game allows you to pause, go down to the level select and scroll down to “GOTO 0” and press A. This will take you to the level “Grapple Up”. After completing the level you will be taken to the next level of Iggy's Challenge. Complete this process a total of 10 times to finish the set.

TIME ENDS WHEN YOU MOVE YOUR CURSOR OVER LIZZIE IN THE CHARACTER SELECT AFTER THE CREDITS
