Tips - Abusing the game menus

Everything in this section is allowed in all speedrun categories.

Open and close the party menu

Whenever you open or close the party menu (where you see all the party members, and can access their inventory), there is a brief time for the menu to appear or disappear. During that brief time, the screen will turn black, but the game is still playable during that time. That means:

  • You can still move on the map.
  • There are no collisions. If there is an enemy blocking your way, you can still walk through it.
  • Regular screen transitions don't play. Which means, you can move between maps very fast by opening the menu, and switching to the next map while the menu is closing.

Also note that when you open and close the menu, NPCs are reset to their default locations on the map. Useful if there are some NPCs that block your way in villages or cities.

Open and close the skills menu

When you walk near an enemy in the open maps or dungeons (one tile away from the enemy, in any direction), you enter a "combat state". During that state, the enemy will start an attacking cycle, which will activate an attack every ~3 seconds (while you are near the enemy).

In this state you can also open the skills menu - a special menu that will open instead of the party menu, from which you can access combat items and character skills. While the skills menu is opened, all enemies are freezed - they won't move and they can't attack you.

One interesting property about the skills menu - it resets the attack cycle of the enemies. So the enemy will need ~3 more seconds to attack from the moment you opened and closed the menu, instead of the moment you walked near the enemy. This can be abused for two main things:

Avoiding enemies (A.K.A running away like a little sissy baby)

Instead of fighting enemies, you can just run away from them. And if you got close to an enemy, just continue to run away for 1 second, then open and close the skills menu, and continue walking. The enemy won't be able to attack again if you got far enough.

You can safely get across all maps and dungeons of the game with this way, no matter how high or low your level is. You might get hit sometimes from an enemy if you are not careful, but it's not something that Cassia Leaves can't solve.

Fighting enemies

In case you do want to fight enemies (either regular enemies for exp/gold grinding, or some bosses), you can use the skills-menu to fight without getting hit. The order of operations:

  • Go to the enemy and attack him
  • Immediately open the skills menu, wait for the party member to switch to the next character
  • close the menu, attack, then open the menu again

In terms of keyboard inputs, it will be ZX-XZX-XZX-XZX-... , and so on.

Note - be very careful when you are about to kill the enemy or the boss. If you open the skills menu immediately after the enemy is dead, that's okay. But if you wait a bit until the EXP amount from the enemy shows up on the screen, and then you open the menu - the game will crash.

Aggressive enemies

The skill-menu trick won't work when fighting "aggressive" enemies. Those are enemies that attack you as soon as you enter their attack range. (After that they attack you every 3 seconds as normal). The problem is that they also attack you as soon as you close the skills-menu, so it can't be used to avoid their attacks.

Most regular enemies are not aggressive, so they won't be a problem. The enemies that are aggressive can be avoided by walking around them. (The only exception is the aggressive bat in the entrance of the Thial Mountain Pass. Passing around him can be tricky.)

All bosses of the game are aggressive, so the skills-menu trick won't work on them either. However, if you fight the boss from the left side, the boss loses the aggressive status, and then you can attack him as much as you want with the skills-menu trick.

I have no idea why that happens.
