After discussing with the mod team and top runners, we agreed to make changes to bhop rules and to the IL leaderboards.

Changes on bhop and IL rules

All of these changes don't affect console runs, since all bhops are allowed on console.

Bhop rules:

We are making slight changes to bhop rules so that they are less arbitrary. From now on, the following bhops will be allowed:

  • "Unintentional bhops" (as long as they are consistent on 62FPS). Those are the bhops you can easily get without going for it because doing a jump is faster, regardless if you get a bhop or not.

  • "Strat Bhops" (as long as they are consistent on 62FPS). All bhops that are part of a strat are allowed. A bhop is considered a "strat bhop" if the timesave you get is not only due to the fact that bhopping is faster than running.

This means that the curb bhop in the beginning, the bhop after the blue boxes, and the bhop to the power switch in drying ground are no longer allowed, as they do not fit into both of the categories mentioned above.

The top 3 runs that used those bhops will receive a very small time penalty to compensate.

IL Rules:

To insure that IL's run are fair to all runners, we are making some major changes to the leaderboards. These changes will also apply to the categories in Category Extensions that have bhops allowed.

  • The "62 FPS" sub category will be changed into a "Default" category, where all of the rules from full game runs apply.
  • The "61.81 FPS" sub category will be changed into a "Bhop" category, where all bhops are allowed and where you can change your FPS to 61.81. All the runs that used bhops in the 62 FPS category before will be moved to the new "Bhop" category.

The modifications to the leaderboards and rules will be done in the near future.

Due to discoveries in how the main menu works there have been some changes to the load remover

  • Timer will pause in the main menu for 1.5 seconds, it will resume after 1.5 seconds if in the menu for too long
  • Timer will begin if you move your mouse before you start moving at the beginning of the run

Anyone who sits inactive in the main menu for extended periods of time will potentially be faced with run rejection, even if the timer keeps running after the 1.5 seconds. What is and isn't an "extended period of time" is up to moderator discretion.

After a few very lengthy days of discussing bhops between the mod team, top runners, and the general community we've come to a final decision as a mod team. Obviously, since this will be a big change, we didn't want something as simple as a binary vote when people's opinions are not as simple as a one-word answer.

From this point forward, flatground bhops will be banned from most categories, including all the main board categories.

The reason for this rule change is due to new discoveries in how bhopping works in Outlast. The consistency at which a runner is able to hit perfect flatground bhops is tied directly to the framerate of the game. At the game's default FPS cap of 62 FPS, a runner is only able to get a perfect bhop every other jump on flatground, even if every spacebar input is perfectly timed. However, on slightly lower FPS, it becomes possible to chain together multiple bhops in a row on flat ground. This creates an advantage for those with slower computers, as their FPS will dip more commonly and they will be able to bhop more than those with a constant 62 FPS.

Unfortunately, this discovery left us with basically no good options as to how to proceed. Either we enforce a lower FPS cap that allows everyone to hit consistent chained flatground bhops, or we ban flatground bhopping altogether. We decided upon banning flatground bhopping as we felt it would be best for community and would allow the run to be more enjoyable versus turning the run into a bhop fest.

This does NOT mean your runs will be deleted if you achieved or attempted flatground bhops. The only runs that will be archived will be the 8:05 and 8:06 runs in Any%, and the runs under 50:37 in Glitchless, as these times are borderline unachievable without attempting flatground bhops. Both Falex and Axes have agreed to archive these runs.

Although bhops are being banned from most categories, they will NOT be banned from: 10 Batteries, FAC, Death%, Wheelchair to Heaven, Superjump, and all IL categories. These specific categories will also allow the player to cap their in-game FPS at 61.81, to allow bhops to be more easily attainable to everyone. People do not need to do this however, as 62 FPS is perfectly fine to run on, and there will be a selectable variable when you submit a run under these categories.

These rulings apply to PC.

Thanks for all you guys do for this game. These changes will be rolled out within the next few days <3

If anyone has any questions please reach out to one of us on Discord

(update 2/17/22 - Please make sure you check the Game Rules and Category rules before submitting a run if you are unsure about everything that you need for run validation.)

The moderation team have decided that "The Whistleblower" in main game and "If I Die" in Whistleblower are not included in the 100% run.

The reason being is because both of these collectables are obtained during the intro cutscenes that are skipped normally and sometimes you could have a save file that doesn't include these collectibles in your save file. So it would be odd to penalize someone for not collecting a collectible that is not in the route.

We're doing a community vote on renaming the Glitchless No S+Q category to just Glitchless. If the vote passes to change the name, the rules won't be changing just the name of the category. If you would like to vote please join our Discord server and see the announcements channel.

If you are unable to find our Discord link, it is right below the follow button at the top of the page.

Edit November 21:

Community vote has concluded and the final results were 28 voted yes to change the category name and 17 voted not to change it. Category name has been changed due to majority vote.

Due to a recent cheating incident in the community, rules have been enforced

Game audio is now required for every submission

Bhops now requires you to have either a handcam, or to have tutorials prompts enabled + showing the controls menu at the end of the run

Jump must be bound to space

Don't forget to read the rules as a whole before attempting runs
