Hi hans_fm17,

I noticed that a lot of long standing rules were changed yesterday and I'm wondering if there was a discussion among the community first and if so, where that discussion took place. The rules that were in place before the changes yesterday were based on meetings, community feedback, and consensus among all of the runners over many years. Any changes to these rules should have been discussed and agreed upon first.

From what I can see, the main things that have been changed are:

  • Duckstation was added as an acceptable emulator (which was previously strictly banned by the community)
  • The time that the run starts was changed
  • All runs have been re-timed

While we appreciate that you were willing to take over ownership of the game due to the other mods being inactive, all of the changes you made should be reverted as they do not represent the rules set by the community. We're happy to discuss this here in this SR board, or in the Tenchu Discord, which currently has over 140 members, but as a new moderator and new runner of Tenchu, you need to understand that you can't just make changes to the game like you did yesterday. The community needs to ALWAYS be a part of the discussion first.

That said, welcome to the Tenchu community and we look forward to hearing back from you.

Thanks,

NjNJA QK

Is there a setting that I change to only have one run per user show up in a category?

The issue right now is that I have a user who has 2 runs on a leaderboard because they ran the game first on normal, and then later on easy. Adding the difficulty was just supposed to be informational instead of actually effecting anything on the leaderboards. Am I missing a setting somewhere? It's been a few years since I initially set it up.

I've read through all of the old forums posts and I wanted to give my opinion as I plan on playing this game soon and I think the current leaders are somewhat restrictive and limiting. Note: This is just my opinion and I know this game is old, but since it was recently free on Xbox and Aragami 2 comes out next year, this game has a chance to gain some popularity and new submissions and I'm curious to see what people some up with.

I think the main issue is with v1.03b and the current categories. First, I think it's fair to say that the current pc version and all console players can't compete with the old and unpatched Aragami runs. This creates a big problem as new potential runners (such as myself) don't want to be forced to play on old patches (which btw is impossible for console players), just to have a decent time on the leaderboards.

No New Game categories? I'm curious why 🤔.

How do you time the runs for console? I've never used a plug-in or autosplitter in my lifesplit so I don't know if that's a PC only thing. I also don't see it in the resources tab, so I'm not sure where to get it from.

My suggestion would be to have 4 main categories at the top: Any%, Any% NG+, Any% Co-op, Any% NG+ Co-op. Create subcategories for Current patch and v1.03b.

I'm still a ways off from learning to speedrun this game (haven't even beat it casually yet), but I was really confused when I looked at the any% easy run. Stages 1-1 and 1-2 are totally different then the stages I got when I played on easy.

So then I looked at the any% normal run and 1-1 and 1-2 are also completely different than both what I got and the current any% easy run WR so how does this game work? Random stages or is it based on what you do in the previous stage? Maybe based on how long it takes you to beat the stage or what rank you get? I don't understand.

Just an fyi, I'm running version 1.1.0.0 of this game on pc which is the most up to date version of the game as of making this post.

Edit I downloaded the easy and normal runs and put them side by side with my video just doing a quick run from the title screen til the end of 1-2. Hope that's ok. As you can see, 1-0 is the same, but 1-1 and 1-2 are all different.

I. Video Evidence Requirements
- All submission require video evidence.
- Videos must have a permanently hosted link. If your video is no longer available, your run will become invalid and will be removed.
- You must not cover a significant portion of the gameplay screen. (example: your webcam covers the health bar)

II. Audio Requirements
- Must be able to clearly hear the gameplay audio

III. Timing Requirements
- The initial and final splits must be consistent with the timing rules of the specific category.
- Individual level runs are timed with the in-game timer.

IV. Region and Platform Specification Requirements
- Region and platform specification is mandatory.

V. Emulator Indication Requirements
- If an emulator was used, indication of that use is mandatory.
- Specify which emulator was used in the "Comment" submission section.
- Unless stated otherwise in the games rules, these are the allowed emulators:
  - For PS1 games: Mednafen, Beetle PSX, Beetle PSX HW, and BizHawk.
  - For Wii games: Dolphin (latest release)
  - For PSP games: PPSSPP (Andriod version is banned)
  - For DS games: DeSmuME 0.9.11
  - For PS2 games: PSCX2 (latest release)

VI. Grandfathered Submissions
- Any submission made prior to this rule set being implemented (August 23,2020) still holds a valid place on the leaderboards, even when the submission no longer meets the requirements.

VII. Cheating and Consequences
A submission is considered cheated when the player uses the following methods in the submission (unless allowed in the game or category rules):
- In-game cheat codes
- Manipulating the in-game timer
- Cheating devices, i.e. GameShark, Action Replay, Game Genie, etc.
- Any emulator-specific functions, i.e. save states, frame limiter, overclocking, etc.
- Tools to combine segments of runs or attempts
- Claiming a run by another player as their own
Any submission using such methods will be rejected or removed. If a player submits additional cheated runs, all of their runs will be removed from these leaderboards and, if they have runs on leaderboards outside of the Tenchu series, those leaderboard moderators will be contacted.

VIII. Rejection Appeal Allowance
- If you believe your run was unfairly rejected, you may appeal the rejection by messaging a leaderboard moderator privately.

I made a Discord Channel for the Shinobido series. https://discord.gg/pG6WqrZ I thought it would be nice to have a place to discuss all 3 games. Seems like Shinobi games are starting to make a comeback. Ninja games will be next. 😉

Hello! I've completed my first any% speedrun of this game offline (I will stream official attempts soon), but I'm really confused. I played the game from beginning to end with no game overs and no saving in-between, but at the end of the run, after I killed Gamuran, the end game screen showed my "Final Results" time as 00:00:00. My "realtime" score from my livesplit is 2:11:20. The time at the end of the game at the save screen was 2:07:22.

At the moment the World Record on the leaderboards for any% looks like it's using the time from the save screen, but the True Ending% is using the time from Final Results screen. Which one is correct? Are they scored different based on category?

Also, I know the run description for the only any% run says the the run is invalid, but doesn't say why. I'm assuming it's because the 'dead body' cheat code was used to jump higher, but I'm not sure. Was there another reason? Since it's an invalid run is it only on the leaderboards until another run is submitted?

Also does anyone know why my Final Results time was 00:00:00? I love this game, but I'm still confused on the rules.

Thanks -NjNJA QK

Is there a guide somewhere on how to go out of bounds? I'll start trying to speedrun this game in a couple weeks, but I can't figure out how to clip out of bounds with any of the characters @_@. Would it be possible to add a No-OoB category (like on the Mark of the Ninja page https://www.speedrun.com/motn/full_game)?

I have an idea for a new category called Any% All Characters. The goal is to beat the game with all 3 characters in one single segment run from a new save. The rules will basically match the rules for the other Tenchu 2 any% categories:

  • Must be a new game.
  • You can use any items gained during the run.
  • Time for Real Time starts when choosing the first characters stage, and ends when the final characters boss's HP reaches 0 (final hit on the final boss). Note: this run will be based off In-game time unless all other categories are changed to Real Time
  • In-game time is tallied up after the run from the record screen.
  • You MUST show all times from the record screen at the end of the run.
  • Single Segment
  • You can play the characters in any order, but you must complete all 3.
  • The cheat code to unlock Tatsumaru may be used. No other cheat codes are allowed.

I've successfully run this category a few times. This video is my current PB (and I guess WR too).

Hello everyone. I'm thinking about speedrunning this game starting this week, but I was browsing through the leaderboards and noticed there are speedruns that don't have video proof on the website anymore. Specifically these are missing:

1st place Any% Ayame 1st place Mission 1 Any% Rikimaru 1st place Mission 2 Any% Rikimaru

I'm very new to the website so I'm not sure how this is handled. I'd message a mod directly, but apparently there is no messaging feature on this website. I'd love to see those videos so I can get an idea of the route and strategy involved... but at the same time if they no longer exist and can't be recovered, then there's no longer video proof and the times should be removed because they can no longer be verified.
