Ah, well I'll see if one of the super mods can awaken from hibernation, in the meantime if someone with site admin (or whatever) powers happens to see this and revert the Xenogears leaderboard to the way it was a few days ago I would be highly appreciative.

Is that a super mod only thing? I'm just a regular mod for the game.

I'll save the fine details, basically I'm a rookie with SRC and I was trying to do something on the Xenogears leaderboard that I didn't understand as well as I should have and I deleted many things instead of just one thing by accident. If there is some way to undo it (either by my own powers or site admin powers) I would appreciate it. Cheers

Hello all, it's an exciting time for Xenogears speedrunning and I feel it's time to re-examine a few topics that are unrelated to the new glitches and skips. pidge and I have our own personal opinions on some things that should be changed and we would like to bring these issues up. They are as follows:

Turbo

Currently, the status quo is that Turbo is only allowed in some categories, and is particularly banned in Any% and Any% NMG. We would like to allow Turbo in all categories, with a new column added in the run information to show whether Turbo was used. While other games, such as the Legend of Dragoon, have gameplay mechanics that give Turbo a large advantage over regular mashing, Xenogears has no such mechanics and the only advantage is automatically advancing text. In addition, we all know Xenogears is an extremely text-heavy game with comparatively little amounts of gameplay for extremely long sections. Grinding runs out by having to mash for such extensive lengths is not only tedious and annoying but causes wrist wear and could lead to repetitive stress injuries, and the low amount of autoplaying cutscenes makes for very few bathroom and food/water breaks. There are also officially licensed turbo controllers released by Sony, making it an officially provided option. We believe that allowing Turbo will make the game more accessible by automating parts with little or no gameplay, sacrificing very little in terms of skill but allowing the runner to take better care of their body.

Timing end

Currently, the status quo is to end timing at "THE END" after the credits. I would like to bring up the idea of changing this to end timing earlier. It seems to be a relic of Japanese standards and I would personally like to make it more in line with most other English version JRPG standards. After talking with pidge we have two ideas for doing so:

  1. Ending time when the Urobolus battle screen fades to white. This would be close to a "last hit" standard while avoiding ambiguity in not knowing if a certain hit is going to be the last one.
  2. After Urobolus, ending time on last text input before credits roll. This would be the last input of the game and it is completely unambiguous.

If timing end is changed, all runs will have their times edited to reflect the new timing method.

Allowing sessions for long categories

Currently, splitting runs into multiple sessions is banned in all but the miscellaneous "Session%" category. While this is the status quo in almost all games, Xenogears is a particularly long game, with some categories exceeding 24 hours, a grueling task on a human body to do in one sitting. We would like to suggest allowing doing such categories in multiple sittings to allow them to be more inclusive and allow better self care for runners who wish to speedrun these tasks. If this is to be allowed, which categories should this be allowed for? Should it be based on length or decided by category directly?

Please let us know what you have to think about these topics.

Okay, all who posted seem to be in agreement that Any% should be in front, so I've gone and done that. Discussion about this glitch can be debated in this topic but I've a few other things I want to bring up that I felt was best to separate into a different topic, which you can view here: https://www.speedrun.com/xenogears/thread/ws3mz/1#8x68d

The current status of the Misc. tab can be decided after other things. In particular, should we decide to change certain current rules, Misc. might be rendered obsolete completely, so let's see where things go.

  1. I don't have an issue with category separation. They're fundamentally different runs and while the new skips aren't cheating by any means, I don't have an issue with making a space for people who don't want to fiddle with glitchy disc swaps and multiple consoles.

  2. In the no major glitches category, obviously kernel menu would be banned. I don't have an opinion as to whether you guys would want to ban the desert skip in that category or not.

  3. As the fastest way of beating the game using only Xenogears discs on official hardware, Any% should be listed first. The fact that I'm alone on the list at the moment should not be relevant to the matter - people looking at the leaderboards should be shown the fastest legitimate time first and foremost, with the ability to browse restrictive categories afterwards. (In this case, "legitimate" is defined as the standards I just stated.) As a sidenote, there is at least one person I know of who is seriously interested in competing with these new glitches as well, so I won't be alone on the list for long. If the reason it isn't already listed first is that there's only one run at the moment, it seems silly to delay an inevitable change just because you're waiting for someone else to do it.

You can find current WRs on these leaderboards and you can find kosame's notes in the pinned Discord messages.

Just a reminder that my profile is still bugged, as I have stated on pages 38 and 41 with no reply.

Since I searched high and low and had to message Ghoul on Discord to get a link to this, I thought it would be best to post it here.

Attempting to browse my account's forum posts now results in a totally empty page. This is worse than what it was like when I posted on page 38, in which it showed up without CSS but otherwise was still browsable.

Hey there, I just started to use my account again for the first time in 3 years and when I try to browse my list of forum posts, it's broken in favour of a layout-less white screen.

Hey, I'm Chuck, aka the only person who's finished a run of this game.

My old PB is from 4 years ago. Since then, I've become quite a busy man and I haven't been able to devote enough time to getting back into practice and improving it. However, that doesn't mean I haven't done some major route changes since my 10:31. I have all this information saved privately because I do work on routing here and there and it's subject to change at any time.

Due to that, I don't have any notes available publicly, because I don't know what I might change in the future. That being said, if you were to hit me up on Discord at Chuckorita#7390, I would be happy to polish my information up enough to send it to you. So don't be afraid to do so.

Happy running!

Oh yeah, one more thing I didn't touch upon. "Turbo users can't compete because it's cheating". That makes no sense whatsoever it's just something with no substance that you people are repeating. Clearly, if there's a leaderboard with turbo, it's not impossible...no?

Holy shit. I'm not a member of the RE3 community, but someone showed me this topic and I'm flabbergasted at what a witch hunt this topic is. I'm not familiar with the stuff that happened outside this topic, but I thought I'd chime in with my own point of view.

I'm from the Final Fantasy community. In FF9, there is a decent amount of people who want to use turbo. Damn, what will we do about this travesty? Well, let's take a look.

http://finalfantasyspeedruns.wikidot.com/wiki:final-fantasy-ix

See, they coexist just fine. No saltiness, just posting of speedruns. Don't use turbo? WR is 9:04:17. Use it? 9:03:44. Everyone is happy. People were a bit concerned in the beginning when the first guy did it, but after people got used to it, it's a non issue.

Why can't you people just do the same thing? Make the non-turbo the regular category, then have a side category for turbo. Everyone is listed. Non turbo is still considered the main one. Turbo has its place too.

As an aside. You guys are saying that it's impossible to mash at 8hz for 10 seconds? Humans are not machines?

That minigame requires about 130 taps in 11 sec. You were saying? :P
