Edit: I just found out you're referring to the glitch mentioned here:

https://www.speedrun.com/potc_tlojs/guides/00caa

It's called "Invisible enemy glitch", and it seems to be solved by defeating all enemies remaining.

Hi there,

I don't have the information myself, but I'd suggest asking in the discord since someone else may have tried to route it before. My guess is that the Leaf Green routing could be taken as base and modified a bit for the exclusive pokemon in Fire Red, but again some discord user might have already started routing it or can help with it already, so I suggest asking there

If you plan on speedrunning this game, you'll have to keep in mind these can happen during your speedrun, so you'll need extra patience (specially if doing so in a single segment).

These seem to be level-specific, happening when certain conditions are met: they don't seem to be exactly random.

However, I'll try to explain them to the best of my understanding so that they can be avoided during runs (can't guarantee runs being always free of these since I can't reproduce them 100% of the time).

1) Softlocks:

These lock the player and/or leave the player unable to progress, resulting in being unable to do anything besides quitting or restarting the level. These are the ones found so far:

1.1. The Bigger the Boat...(potential): if you die facing the main mast while the armored plates are still on, it's possible to get a character stuck inside. It might be possible to get both characters stuck inside and possibly get a softlock, though characters stuck inside the mast can still act (unsure if getting Jack stuck inside can make burning the mast impossible, specially if there aren't 10 bombs left to use the special's finisher).

How to prevent it: try to avoid facing the mast when low on HP during the level.

1.2. Silver Mine, Cloudy Lining: if you have an enemy or enemies nearby when the first platform's supposed to take you two up, and your AI-controlled partner tries to go towards an enemy and stands at the very edge of the platform, it will result in the cutscene starting but the platform not going up, getting stuck. At times this lasts 5-10 seconds only, but that's not always the case.

How to prevent it: simply use Jack's bombs to prevent enemies from coming close to the platform before you get on it.

1.3. The Damsel and the Dead: If you're firing the cannon to break the last wall in the level there's a chance of a pirate hitting you as you switch characters or try to simply stop using the cannon. If this happens and you see your character goes through the cannon (or notice the cannon being intangible), and the wall didn't break, then you're stuck as it seems there's no other way of getting past the wall, resulting in a softlock.

This may happen in Pirates Cursed and Even Worse too.

How to prevent it: use Jack's special to clear the enemies nearby (keep in mind that, if you use the jump finisher, burnt enemies run amok around the area, possibly standing in the way of the cannon shot).

1.4. Where There's Fire, There's Blacksmoke: After the cannon minigame aboard the ship, both characters can get locked in place with their models being invisible, with only the swords being visible to the player. The characters can still be damaged but the enemies soon stop attacking the characters, effectively forcing the player to start over. It seems impossible to die in this state as the character gets locked and becomes invincible when around 5-10% HP. At times it only happens to 1 character, so it's still possible to complete the level, but the invisible character will remain invisible until the next level (maybe it actually happens to both but the player manages to fix one?).

The cause may be either related to the player's actions prior to boarding Blacksmoke's ship or their actions during the cannon minigame.

How to prevent it: right before getting on the ship, perform a forward roll as you quickly switch characters. This will result in the cannon minigame starting with you taking control of the character that was further away from the ship, and then proceeding normally to the boss fight.

I've managed to play the level about 20 times in a row without it happening by doing this, hopefully it's a 100% fix.

2) Crashes:

These cause the game to freeze, then shut down itself on PC. The exact cause is unknown.

So far I've only found one.

2.1. The Last Shot: if you attack Barbossa when he's holding a shield while he's close to a wall, there's a chance of this happenning. A possible cause may be a different attack being called at the same time Barbossa is in "shield mode", since enemies can get hit by a mysterious invisible force around Barbossa at times (could be the spike attack, the cave-in counter or his "tackle" counter, although it's probably one of the first two). It seems like this crash can happen whether Barbossa has high or low HP, so possible HP thresholds are unknown.

Please let me know if you experience softlock/crash issues so that I can add them to the list to avoid the possibility of them happening during speedruns.

If you do lose a recorded run to a softlock/crash, do let me know via PM and we can talk about Crash%/Softlock% as Misc. categories (so that your effort goes somewhere).

I think it'd be interesting as well but I wouldn't like to create an empty category. If someone posts a run here I can create the category so that it can be submitted

AntarcticaBlartic771 year ago

@Hammones if you want to see the category added to the leaderboards you have to do a run of it first and post it here. You can use the Manipless FRLG rules as reference. If you use an emulator, make sure you read the rules regarding emulators as well

Oh ok, I'll check that run too! Nice to see there's an active player for this game =D

And sorry for the soundtrack confusion, I meant the game's music. But if not I understand, music can make relaxing easier because it's easy to get stressed during runs. Looking forward to your next run!

Also, is this the very first part where you start and, as such, a possible Satyr skip?

AntarcticaBlartic772 years ago

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to make a list of different shortcuts/skips/tips/tricks that could be useful for speedrunning. Feel free to contribute if you feel like I've missed something (I'm trying to add stuff that's not from a speedrun video, but about the trick itself).

Here's the playlist with the tricks I've found, I'll try to keep it updated (I know the Worm puzzle skip is more optimized now but I wanted to credit the guy who, apparently, found it first): https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlj5BT6cySZRaG8TBNmI1a1kIMDYTUzr-

Also, Merry Xmas to everyone! =D

Hi there!

First of all, congrats on getting such a good run! I really enjoyed watching it. Secondly, I wanted to say that I'd like to point out some things that I believe could cut down a few minutes, if they're possible (but I'm not sure if you're planning to run this game again, so let me know). Also, would it be possible to have the original soundtracks for your runs?

Regardless, GG and congrats again! Have a Merry Xmas! =D

Requesting Pelipper as an Alt Main, here's the run itself:

AntarcticaBlartic772 years ago

If the held item is finally banned I'll be ok with it, if you noticed in the run my Bulbasaur has no item precisely just in case it'd be banned in the end. However I personally think getting a 10% damage item should be ok since in R/S stuff like Silver Powder or Black Belt can only be obtained by fighting a trainer from the 4th rematch onwards, which is probably unviable during a run. Also some Alt Mains like Beautifly or Sableye get early Psychic anyway without the extra Nugget in Emerald, and get it pre-Flannery. Like I said the purpose of this is to make a freer category, so that people can complete runs in less time even if they're not pros, since I personally have trouble fitting such long runs into my schedule (specially if I have resets).

K, here we go:

-Egg moves/TM/HM moves (anything not in the level-up learnset, basically) are banned, as otherwise the Pokémon could be too strong if they know moves like Earthquake and Fire Blast at Lv5 already. Pokémon cannot have already level-up moves at a lower level than the level they are learnt at -The traded Pokémon cannot have a base total bigger than 500 and must be in its first evolution stage if it can evolve -The traded Pokémon must be Lv5. It must not have any excess EXP (EXP meter must be empty) -The trade must be done in Oldale Town's Poke Center, before battling Youngster Calvin. This is to ensure as much gameplay as possible with your traded mon -The traded Pokémon cannot have event exclusive moves -The traded Pokémon cannot have any EVs in any stat -The traded Pokémon cannot have the Pokérus -The traded Pokémon can have an item equipped when traded, as long as it's not one of the following:

  1. An item that makes it evolve right after the trade
  2. A TM
  3. A pinch berry
  4. Thick Club/Light Ball/etc. (any species-specific item that boosts any stat)
  5. A master ball

If your trade Pokémon holds an evolutionary stone, that evolutionary stone cannot be used until you defeat Wattson (since the first evolutionary stone you get in-game is in Meteor Falls after Wattson)

-The traded Pokémon's level-up moveset must match that of the region where they're being traded from at level 5. This means that, for example, trading a Lv5 Ponyta from FRLG means it must know Quick Attack and Growl, whereas trading it from R/S/E means it must know Tackle and Growl. The possible exploits here are small but should allow for some moveset optimizations

-For Feebas, Beauty must be 0 when traded

-The region of the traded Pokémon must match the player's region (to prevent the bigger international EXP boost) -Your new traded Pokémon must get EXP from every single trainer Pokémon in the game without EXP Share -Your traded Pokémon must defeat most of the trainers throughout the run

Your Pokémon can have any nature/IVs, can be shiny and can have any ability its species can have

Glitches are not allowed

The goal of these runs is to, simply, allow the player to choose from a wider variety of Pokémon that can also level up faster, helping those in the Slow and Erratic groups, too. It's never bad to have a fun/freer category that doesn't require manips to get mons with good stats.

Hey guys,

As some of you might know already I've made an autosplitter for Return of the King. I've already uploaded it and should be available through LiveSplit soon. It includes load removal, start, splits when beginning a new level and the final split just like in previous runs.

Not sure if I'll be able to implement platform support in the future (probably would be a separate video-autosplitter instead) but I'll look into it.

Also, if for some reason one or more features don't work 100% of the time let me know and I'll try to update it quickly. I'm usually available on Discord and go by either NLM or NextLevelMemes ;)
