Emulator Requirements & Information
As a general note, with the exception of THPS1 (with no PC port) and THPS2 (with a not-easy-to-run PC port), it is 100% recommended you run a Tony Hawk game on the PC version.
- This isn't required, but it may delay your run's approval due to having to account for loading times.
- THPS3, THPS4, THUG1, THUG2, and THAW have community-approved mods that allow for PS2 controls and also have general QoL fixes for speedrunners.
- Also, generally, if you can run an emulator, you can run the PC version.
GENERAL RULES:
- Runners must disclose their emulator + version number in all submissions (all runs before June 12, 2023 are grandfathered).
- Emulated runs must show their FPS using an on-screen counter provided by the emulator (i.e. epsxe) OR with an information bar also provided by the emulator (i.e. Project64 1.6/1.7).
EMULATOR-SPECIFIC RULES:
- ALL emulator features (save state, fast forward, etc.) are banned DURING an attempt.
- Emulator features that allow speedhacking are not allowed.
- Patches for emulated runs are not allowed.
- With the exception of Counter Factor being set to 1 on Project64, runners are not allowed to modify emulator settings or utilize third-party software to mimic the loading times of consoles or alter how fast or slow a game is ran in real time or upon loading.
The following emulators are the only ones allowed:
- N64: Project64 1.6/1.7 & Project64 3.X (2.X is banned)
- PS1: epsxe 1.9.X/2.X
- GCN: Dolphin 5.0 (stable)
- PS2: PCSX2 1.6.0+ (stable)
- Xbox: NONE
- PS3: Latest RPCS3 build
- DS: Latest DeSmuME build
- GBA: mGBA 0.10.0
- PSP: Latest PPSSPP build
If you have any questions about these requirements or wish to request a different emulator, please bring them over to the #rulings channel in the THPS Speedrun Discord. If you are having issues setting up the emulator OR PC port, please put them in #tech-help .
