There have been a few suggestions that you guys want to be real categories, such as Dinger%, Blindfolded%, Luigi’s Mansion%, Daisy Cruiser%, and All Captains Extended. If there are any more categories you want feel free to suggest them. These could all be possible categories and would probably be moved to a Category Extensions leaderboard as they are mostly just fun categories for people to run. That being said, to make these all into official categories I will need at least 1 run of each category. Other people can still run them before they are made official but only 1 run needs to be done to make it official. I will run a few of the categories myself, but not all of them. That’s why I need the help of all of you to make these categories real.
P.S. There was a Toy Field category suggestion, but there were no rules for the run. If someone wants to come up with some rules and then do a run of it, I will make it a category.
i had an idea for a category: All Special Items. this would mean unlocking Luigi’s flashlight, Cruiser Pass, Special Shop Pass, Toy Field Pass, and Paintbrush.
also me and @Jman_Games have completed recorded Luigi’s Mansions runs and i have completed a Daisy Cruiser run already.
also new category to add called baby luigi%. pretty simple rules, get baby luigi. timing starts like normal and ends when the character stat screen pops up
Special Items is a fun idea because it requires getting every treasure chest which will give the run plenty of substance! And yeah I have done LM% just need to do my first cruiser run :)
i’m excited for a new category extensions leaderboard but there’s one thing i would like to happen before it is created: discussion. i know there aren’t very many active runners but i want to discuss and give opinions about the categories that have been suggested. having more categories added sounds great but i want to keep the same integrity the main leaderboard has.
here is my opinion on all the categories that have been suggested.
categories i like: Luigi’s Mansion%, Daisy Cruiser%, All Captains Extended, All Special Items.
Luigi’s Mansion and Daisy Cruiser are super fun and have very unique routes that haven’t been seen in a category before. All Captains Extended is an awesome idea as it is in between All Captains and All Characters and it fits well with all the other categories. All Special Items just sounded fun and could also have an interesting route.
categories i am neutral about: Dinger%, Blindfolded%
Dinger% is a fun challenge (i have completed 2 runs) but it doesn’t feel much like a speedrun. there are some strats to increase home run chances but it doesn’t feel like there is any set goal or route. Blindfolded% is alright but i doubt anyone else will try it out. considering most runners are unable to provide a facecam i think my run will probably sit alone on the leaderboard.
categories i don’t really like: Baby Luigi%, Toy Field category
i am all for having categories where the goal is to unlock a certain character, but i just don’t like the goal being Baby Luigi. it doesn’t take long at all to get him which isn’t a bad thing. i think short categories could work well for when you don’t want to spend time doing a longer run or don’t have the time for a longer run. the problem i have with it is how common the route is. all the categories i have in my “categories i like” list have a unique route that sets them apart from the categories on the main board. the route for getting Baby Luigi as fast as possible used to be the beginning to the any% route and is the beginning to the Luigi’s Mansion% route. i would much rather have a category like Waluigi% or Baby Daisy% as these would have more unique routes as they require you to unlock 3 other captains. and for a Toy Field category, Toy Field is much better for trying to get a high score as opposed to a fast time. it’s that simple.
i am very interested in hearing your opinions on these categories and also would love to see more category ideas for this game. in the end, i just want mario super sluggers to be the best it can be when it comes to speedrunning :)
I stand with Wa on his opinions about the categories that should be added and also where he stands on leaderboard integrity. We can have challenge runs, but some things just do not belong on the official leaderboard. We have so many creative people in this community and I am so excited to see what we can do as a collective!
Sorry I've kind of slept on this but a Category Extensions leaderboard could actually be created now. There are a few things I want to say before this happens though.
First, for each of the runner suggested categories that you all want to add I need at least one run (with video) of each before they are officially added to the leaderboard. Also, if you have a category to add, if you could describe the basic rules of the run and a time that is considered a "good run" where a video is needed, that would be great.
Second, I'm thinking of moving the Toadsworth% and the all members of a team categories (Mario Fireballs, Yoshi Eggs, Bowser Monsters, etc.) to the Category Extensions leaderboard because I feel like those would work better on that leaderboard. If anyone doesn't want that change to happen and wants them to stay on the main leaderboard just let me know.
This all still could be a few weeks or possibly months away but I'll do my best to make it happen ASAP.

second, i’m okay with the team categories being moved to the category extensions but i dont know if other runners will feel the same way. however, i think Toadsworth% should stay on the main board. while it is a meme category, it his the category with the 4th most submitted runs on the current board and has had more competitive runners setting times than any of the team categories (the top 6 runners in Toadsworth% are actually the exact same as the top 6 runners in Any%).
lastly, i want to thank you for being a good mod. if it weren’t for you, there would have been huge backlogs of unverified runs this year. so thanks for being there to verify runs as quickly as possible!
what about a 99 runs speedrun? any means, doesn't matter about other team, just get to 99 runs in an exhibition match (i think that's different from what people are saying dinger% is)
