Is psX v1.13 accepted now?

I noticed that there's a new Any% run that's been run on psX v1.13: https://www.speedrun.com/digimon_rumble_arena/run/zgqp72jy

Given that the current rules state explicitly that only ePSXe 1.9.0 is to be used, I was kinda wondering if this was overlooked or if it's now being accepted as a valid emulator.

It might not seem like much, but psX v1.13 does seem to have slightly shorter loads than ePSXe (which has also been my experience in other games) so I'd prefer have a explicit answer on this subject.

PS: Just to be perfectly clear, I'm not against using the emulator and it's still clearly slower than PS2 FDS, but if we're going to allow it I'd rather know so that I can start using it myself as well and enjoy the load time boost.

Yeah, I've noticed psX v1.13 has shorter loads, specially on the first one. I noticed it just after submitted the run. Since the rules only specifies the version of ePSXe emulator, I thought there was not problem on using other emulator. Also, as u said, psX is a little slower than PS2, so in case it is not available, I think it should be (considering that PS2 is also not the original platform of the game, and it has more advantage than using PS1). If ePSXe is held, I must recommend splitting any% into 3 subcategories (PS1, PS2, emulator), cause PS2 runners has a significant advantage from emulator and PS1 runners; it is no a coincidence that record holders used PS2.

However, I did this run just for fun, so there's no problem if my run is rejected. Greetings! n.n

Hey guys, I'm pretty new in the speedrunning community, I've been playing Rumble Arena on ePSXe 1.9.0 as the "Show Rules" state. I have no problem on each person using wich ever emulator they want, but pSX v1.13 has indeed some faster loads, mainly noticable in the first loading screen.

My recommendation is to just allow any kind of emulator as long as it's emulation speed is the same or lower than a PS2. At the very least the rules should be updated to incorporate a more wider experience on the emulator department.

Thanks for the effort of any one involved!

Ok, so now there's a new update on this situation:

I received a new notification about a new emulator run which was 18m 46s. However, when I clicked on the notification to see the run I found out it's been rejected, stating specifically that "ePSXe 1.9.0 is to be used": https://www.speedrun.com/digimon_rumble_arena/run/mrln7e4m

That is fine and good, except that we now have one run rejected for specifically not using ePSXe 1.9.0 and also the run mentioned in my original post which is using psX v1.13 but is still up on the board: https://www.speedrun.com/digimon_rumble_arena/run/zgqp72jy

Again, as I mentioned in my original post: I'm not against using any emulator, but I just want to understand which emulators are actually allowed/forbidden in order to have a level playing field. If we could please get input from one of the mods themselves ( @Hdot12 and/or @DBcade ) clarifying this situation that'd be awesome.

Sorry for the inconvenience I am only semi-active anymore when it comes to speedrunning so I kinda missed the whole situation. I didn't know DBcade accepted a run on that emulator, but from what I remember about why the Digimon community is so persistent about ePSXe 1.9.0 to be used:

ePSXe 1.9.0 is 1) slower than PS2 FDS and 2) proven to be consistent with it on all PC systems it runs on

Those are the conditions in order to bring new emulators into the mix and it needs to be proven by testing it across different machines. From what I saw psX v. 1.13 seems to be partly slower than FDS but when I checked the most "recent" (again, I aplogize for not being as active anymore) run of Yukami_42day the first loading screen of the run appeared to be slightly faster than the one in the WR by JMiX__ done on PS2. This brings me to the conclusion that psX v1.13 produces loading time results which vary between different hardware specs and therefore this emulator can not be accepted as it might end up being faster than legitimate hardware in some scenarios which should never be the case.

Therefore I will reject runs now which have been performed on said emulator.

Sorry for the inconvenience again, I hope this clears things up and why we insist on ePSXe 1.9.0, feel free to keep discussing and if you want to have another emulator be allowed then you somehow need to find a way to prove that it meets the two requirements mentioned above.

I really Think that duckstation should be allowed as well

Speaking from experience from other games, I've also found Duckstation to be fairly consistent with its load times and usually in the same ballpark as ePSXe 1.9.0.

In the event you guys would like to look into suitable alternatives, here's a post with approved emulators for another game I run: https://www.speedrun.com/pepsiman/thread/psa0s/

I wouldn't exactly take the list for granted as-is and allow them without testing them first on this particular game (each game is different after all), but at the very least I personally don't have much reason to doubt Duckstation and/or RetroArch.

I think all is well and fine, I didn't know about the criteria to pick an emulator, therefore I wasn't well informed when writing my previous post.

That said, I understand now why the use of ePSXe 1.9.0 instead of a more volatile one like the one I used. I wouldn't like to take a spot in the leaderboard, based on external factors, that would defeat the purpose hence why I mentioned this Topic.

Thank you both @MrMonsh and @Hdot12 for advancing the discussion on this topic. (✪ω✪)/
