Out Run was one of Sega's best known racing games released to arcades in 1986. Using Sega's new 'Super Scaler' technology and two advanced co-processors, the specially developed Out Run board was able to draw both dozens of large, colorful sprites to the screen at varying sizes and scales as well as a multi-lane roadway simultaneously which was mind-blowing for its time. The Super Scaler technology was also used in other Sega arcade titles of the time including Space Harrier and Hang-On and later Afterburner and Power Drift. This would be one of the last 2d racing games Sega would release before the introduction of the 3d polygonal rendering technology seen in Virtua Racing.
