As you may know, 1.17 Caves and Cliffs Update is coming out on June 8.

I don't know how much this would affect speedrunning. Let me know your thoughts on this new upcoming update!

1.17 also includes everything from the 1.16 update. So bastions would be tough.

Piglin trading would be tough though because it was <4% in 1.16 not it is just <2% https://minecraft.fandom.com/wiki/Bartering (1.17) https://minecraft.fandom.com/wiki/Bartering/Outdated_loot_tables_in_Java_Edition (20w07a to 1.16.1)

Pearl trades would be twice as rare, strongholds will take forever to find, the game would lag a lot more, ect.

literally every useful piglin barter is rarer, obsidian, string, fire res potions are all less likely from bartering, and @Acnnx pearls are actually 4 times rarer because in 1.16.1 it is 4.8% for 4-8 pearls, but in 1.16.2+ it is 2.4% with only 2-4 pearls

piglin brutes exist too

and unless u can get pearls from like right clicking an enderman or something then no one is going to speedrun it imo

Will the categories change from: Pre 1.9 1.9-1.15 1.16+

TO:

Pre 1.9 1.9 - 1.16 1.17+

and btw will optifine or caffeine be allowed in the new update?

It could potentially be good for ssg

1.17 is completely useless to rsg running but it might be good for ssg runs depending if structures or structure locations change in 1.17 or 1.18

also, because of the height limit change, I would want to believe that nether traversing would be substantially harder because of the "caves and cliffs"

@LeafpoolSR I don't think the height limit will change in the "Caves and Cliffs" update.

The update is split into 2: Part 1 = 1.17 Part 2 = 1.18

I think the new height limit is in part 2, I may be wrong..

BTW @Acnnx wdym Mojang has never referred Caves and Cliff Part One as 1.17. It's literally what it is, 1.17 Part 2 is 1.18

@ItsShadz 1.9-1.15 will stay separate from 1.16+ because of pearl trading. However, there's no guarantee that 1.16 and 1.17 will be grouped within the same category.

I mean part 1 dont add much so I wouldnt add it
