I just beat my old PB by 16 seconds. What do you think?

first off, gg on the new pb! and second, here are some tips i think will help you: (also, if i don't mention anything, it's safe to say whatever it is is fine)

  • don't jump up top at the end of 1-1, you're safe jumping on either goomba assuming you are holding b

  • for the most part your 1-2 seems solid, but just a note, stomping on one of the earlier koopas and kicking the shell to the right will probably save you quite a bit

  • your 4-2 already looks pretty good, especially with that grab, but i recommend learning wrong warp which again can save you a considerable amount

  • for 8-1 you don't have to wait at the base at most of these pipes (ex: the one before the 3 goombas) because if you wait at the one before it the plant in the next pipe will be down

  • in 8-2 it looks like you're waiting for a long time to do a couple of the jumps, i don't know if this is just you being nervous and playing it safe but generally there is some leeway for a lot of these jumps

  • for 8-3 i don't recommend waiting at the base of the first pipe, generally waiting will tend to make the bros more difficult (at least it seems like it), the stairs afterwards can be improved by jumping from the top step to the ground to the right of the other stairs. i don't know why you did the weird jump thing for the second set of bros, obviously try not to do that. otherwise you're probably fine

  • for 8-4 you can obviously clean up the first jump by either just jumping from the second to last or last step from the getgo instead of moving to the left a bit. turnaround was fine, just dont scroll to the right as much as you did here in the future because that's pretty easy timesave. for water section i recommend swimming at the very top until you land on the part of the ground with the firebar, even if you land really far left there it's not a big deal. for last room all i can say is when you're waiting for the podoboo don't stay at the far left because the podoboo won't spawn unless you're closer to it

if you ever feel like wanting to go into more detail and you want to learn more strategies, i highly suggest you look at darbian or kosmic's any% tutorials, both are extremely informative and helped me with a lot. darpey also has a gif tutorial which was really helpful as well.

GG on the pb! That looks like a pretty decent time for the strats that you went for. Before I begin, everything Eddie says is correct - take note of what he said :)

One strategy in 8-2 that is very worthwhile adding and keeping until you have around a 5:00/5:01 is BBBB. This strategy requires a couple of tactical bonks, which give you consistent koopa patterns throughout the level regardless of what framerule you're on. This means that you can get 339/340 every time without much effort at all. Here's a tutorial of the trick

You also play incredibly safe throughout the run, which massively limits the times that you can get. One example of this is 8-1, where you wait on virtually every pipe. You have around a 10 frame window to jump over these, so it's completely free. Simply challenging more of these jumps throughout the run would save a LOT of time.

As eddie says, check out darbian's and/or kosmic's any% tutorials. These are what the majority of newer runners used to learn the game nowadays, including myself, and they're very good tutorials if a bit high level at first. Here's a link to darpey's 5:18 using completely safe strategies . Good luck on the runs!

I've been looking for ways to improve my time on 8-2 as I'm getting a 335 consistently. Thanks Miniland for putting Tecate's tutorial on here; I'll have to work on that. I've been real close to getting a sub 5:15 run and I think this will help me achieve that.

with bbbb and perfect execution (no fpg or anything crazy like that) you can even get 459. Even with bbbb

Boink, Bonk, Bounce, Boing (I'm pretty sure).

It's a setup that @xeroxfiend found which (most of the time) manipulates the paratroopa's position to be at medium height towards the end of 8-2. I don't know (specifically) what you need to do to manipulate the paratroopa's postion, that's just all I know.
