Hello! Who should I talk to about creating a new speedrun category? This wouldn't qualify as a category extension, since I'm using unmodified Melee on console. Basically the requirements are unlocking every character and stage in the game. The category rules are: 1. New save file required, 2. Run starts on the first black frame after the Melee intro screen, 3. Run ends either at the “Mushroom Kingdom II is open: it's the dream world, Subcon!” message or “You've cleared all 1-P Event Matches!” whichever one is later.
My full run which is under 9 hours can be seen here:
It should satisfy all of the requirements of the broader game rules, was single segment, all game audio is audible, no mods / cheating were used, and I didn't use the Master Hand glitch. I used a Melee 1.02 NTSC disc on Wii in progressive scan mode.
Thanks in advance!
Hello. I have heard of this category before perhaps from multiple players, and it seems like a logical category in design as it has a clear purpose. Do you know if anybody else has done a speedrun of this category, or if they are close to doing one? I can't remember if anybody had already done one even though there has been talk about it in the past. I have added All Trophies in the past which is a big category that has two speedruns completed that I have been informed of, but for this instance I would like to know if anybody else has plans to or is doing play for it before deciding further on when I would add it.
I believe if people want to do a category and they have a video of it, it’s atleast worth putting on category extensions. Smash games, melee especially can benefit to more full game categories for either main or category extensions, especially by seeing the kind of content coming from melee players, the more the merrier as long as it has a clear end goal which it does
I've run a catagory similar to this just doing All Character unlocks (sans Mewtwo kind of) and I have a ton of fun doing it, i'm gonna be doing them more in the future
Thank you @Pokemonmaster888 for the reply!
And also I'm super happy to hear @RubberDuckyAssassin and @Amii_Joe's enthusiasm for the category as well.
On top of this, I've found that toadfan5 (Twitch) has also done a similar run, which you can see here: (part 1) and (part 2). Again, this is characters-only. I haven't seen many people do stages also, but I have had interest in it from folks I've talked to.
Wow, OK. On top of that, I found this run: https://www.reddit.com/r/smashbros/comments/8ox8mr/ssbm_new_speedrun_category_idea_all_unlocks/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
Seems to be exactly what I did but with a better time haha!
I decided that these three stage and character unlocking categories (all stages, all characters, all stages & characters) will be added to the Super Smash Bros. Melee Category Extensions section right now. In the future they and their submissions can be taken and moved to the regular game, but I am doing this to give that game some more activity and to evaluate the interest level in these new charts. slippy318 will add them. The game is accessed here: https://www.speedrun.com/ssbm_ce
I hope they have activity and that the players there have fun.
Awesome @Pokemonmaster888 - thank you! I've submitted it for now, and plan on doing another run later down the road that's significantly more optimized.
Something I wanted to mention, the "All stages" category is redundant with the "All stages + characters" since getting all of the characters is a requirement to unlock Flat Zone (via Game & Watch) and unlock all Event matches, and thus unlock Final Destination. @Pokemonmaster888
I asked slippy318 to do your latest request three days ago, David, and he did it ~two days ago.
Thank you! Also, I'm noticing on that category extension, it says Character: "Dr. Mario." This is not relevant, can the character section be removed from the "All characters" and "all characters + stages" category?
It could be, but that would require us to remove the character variable for all "Full Game" categories, and make character variables for each other full game category individually. In short, it would be a major pain as far as leaderboard editing goes if we did that.
OK, no problem @slippy318. Just wanted to see if it was possible.
@pokemonmaster, I have a question for you. Since @Arahpthos has also done the run for both all characters and all characters + stages, does that deem it worthy enough to add to the main SSBM category instead of extensions? I noticed unlock all trophies is in the main category with two leaderboard posts.
I will say that those two speedrun categories need more players and time until I can evaluate them further. Two players there does not seem like a lot yet. I know at least three people have done All Trophies speedruns and submitted them to this site. However, that category was added months before this one and I added it to the standard game because it was a category with a strong ending point that encompassed a lot of content in the game. I felt it would be immediately suitable for the standard game's charts because it was less of a precursor to aspects of the game than other possible categories that could be suggested. I know people had expressed interest in it before, so I went with that decision. I don't know if one can measure how much activity the two charts in question need before doing your request, but keep motivating others and people will play them.
We recently said to allow the "Hyrule Code" for runs, but as @SukeSJ said in the Changelog Forum Post
the decision we made with Hyrule Code and UCF was made extremely quickly by us moderators.
And it indeed was a hasty decision with little to no discussion. Now we have dec
